Yes, you're correct about him being from the US. But I think he was with Morris Day and the Tyme but was kicked out because his complexion didn't conorm with those of Prince and Day. Intraracism. He has a gritty voice which I think is fine.

@kariebeez Alex was the original lead singer of Flyte Tyme, which is who became The Time. Morris Day started out as the drummer. Alex was NOT kicked out because of his complexion (Terry Lewis, Jerome Benton, and Jellybean Johnson are all dark skinned) but because Alex had a coke habit, and Prince didn't play that. Alex was fired, Morris moved to lead singer, Jellybean moved to drums, and Jesse Johnson replaced Jellybean on guitar. The rest is history!
