Theoretically he could have survived, humans in that position have a bit more wiggle room then the average rodent, he could use his legs to try and push off or if his hands are free try and do something to loosen the grip though you would have to do it at a point where you don't fall to your death.

If the owl had any grip whatsoever then anything of that size is screwed. He'd be dead within seconds after the owl landed. Ever been pecked by an owl? It's annoying and can hurt when you're normal sized, shrink you down to a mouse's size and you're dead in one thrust from the owl.
