for those unfamiliar with the awesomeness of this show (Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei = goodbye professor despair) the character is actually mexican. i'm sure that a lot of people will bemoan the idea of a mexican illegal immigrant, but that's what this show is about. stereotypes. and lists. it sounds weird but it is easily one of the most clever animes around(IMO).

One thing I always found just a teensy bit odd about anime is this: all of the Japanese people are colored with Caucasian skin tones, but yet anyone coming from another part of Asia tends to have more tanned looking skin. Fei Ku from Negima is another good example of this since she's a Chinese girl living in Japan, and there's this other character who I just had in mind but suddenly forgot (heh, it happens).

It's not a big deal at all, but is there any particular reason for this?

In most animes, caucasians will have an even whiter skin tone than what they use for Japanese people. Also, coloring people from other parts of eastern asia with a darker skin tone makes them seem more foreign.

@HamHamDude Actually I notice that the caucasian lady in this anime has a slightly pink undertone, and a lighter complexion. But truthfully speaking Japanese people aren't yellow at all. AND, I don't know why people call Asians yellow. I haven't seen any Asian the color yellow before. Some are a bit tanned but most are pale. So I think the artists did a good job with match the color.

Then again; Japanese in general don't share skin tones as dark as the rest of Asia's populace, (except Russians.)

Japan, like all of Asia, idealizes pale white skin. Someone with brown skin is considered unusual, they're either socially (ganguros for example) or racially an outsider. Of course, that still is pretty illogical as people China and Korea are just as pale and pale-obsessed as the Japanese.

And there's always been, like, a thing with eastern Asian culture and fair skin, they have a gazillion products to make your skin lighter over there. But in SZS, if you notice Kaere's (blondie) skin coloring, it's subtly different from other character's coloring. The joke being that Kaela's time overseas actually turned her white, thus her blonde hair, blue eyes, and more pinkish skin tone. Taro and Ku Fei are dark because filipinos and south Han are dark.
