Thank you very much. Good demonstration. I want to use muscle wire for my robot projects because servos are way too loud, and become annoying very quickly. Thanks.
@Soulrider2012 - I agree with you 90+% of people commenting are truly dumbfucks.
I belive you are not - anyhow to know more about this muscle wire stuff - go direct to the manufacturer - get a sample pack.... .toki.co.jp/biometal/english/contents.php
Probably 90% of the people posting negative comments don't even understand the mechanics behind Nitinol wire (memory wire) or have a clue how this works. It's not just a mechanical servo going back and forth. It's actually very cool stuff and it's great to see people finding new uses for it. Can this same action be done a different way, sure and has been but this is something more high tech and interesting.
So is there a restoring spring? If you apply heat the wire contracts, but after it contracts and the heat is removed, it will elongate, but wires can only pull, never push. Can someone clarify?
@Clamburgers The wire has two states cold and hot. In the cold state it is soft and you can move it. When heat is applied through hot air, water, or electric current the wire returns to it's memory state and tightens up so yes, it can go both ways on it's own. All it needs to do is cool down and the wire will pull the other way. Heat back up and it pulls the other way again. Back and forth. I didn't realize it happened this quick though. Cool stuff.
So, if you put, say, 20 of these muscel wires in parallel and attach a 10:1 gear, you could get a better torque and speed, right? How much current would it pull?

compared to motor servo, this is perfectly silent?
SettimaLegione 5 months ago
sumerge the wire in water so it will get cooled quickly, water disipates the heat 25 times quickly than air.
This wires has future as muscles even if only can support 5% of shortening.

i would personally use servo for this kind of application

about how much current are you using in the wire and what size wire?

すごい although... i would like to see a demonstration of how strong these wires are, compared to how much electricity is used.

Prolly a second wire in opposition to the first.

Great work and great idea.
But you shouldn't be showing this on YouTube if you haven't applied for patent. You will loose a serious amounts of money in royalties.
Good luck.

thats crap. better just buy a futaba S9650, and a receiver and Tx, and you get 3 kilograms of torque, and an impressive speed!
dertuman 3 years ago
Yeah. And you can even have fun driving to the store.
It is way more fun to buy things that to use your brain, apply your skills and imagination to create something... right?

how does it work?
fairyheli2 3 years ago
M.wire heats up, it contracts, and its connected to a round thing. So whan it pulls, it makes a rotational force.
6364gg2 3 years ago
how does it push?
fairyheli2 3 years ago
It reverses polerity
