@kiwipool00 Just connect the solar array pos. to capacitor pos. and neg. to neg. Then run neg to neg side of RC circuit board and pos to pos. Same place as the battery in the car once hooked up. It's that simple. You basically unhook the car's internal rechargeable battery, replace it with the cap and hook the cap, solar array, and car all together pos to pos and neg to neg.
@dindogallardo I got them from a friend who knew a guy that knew a guy that worked on a cancelled satellite program. The cells were surplused and handed down to me. But, you can buy the same thing online if you search for super solar cells.
@kiwipool00 The micro cars require around 200mA at 2.5VDC to operate. You can try 5VDC @100mA, but the voltage may fry some components on the car's board at that voltage level. The idea is to get 2 -3 VDC @ 200mA or higher, and higher mA is better for speed and power. And, I am also stopmojim, so I have tried the variables. You can experiment with different voltage and current levels if you like. I am just posting the optimal levels for operation of these micro cars.
@kiwipool00 An array is used to get the voltage up. Solar cells come in 2 varieties, high current/low voltage and high voltage/low current. These cars need around 200mA or so to operate, more is better. But, they also need around 2.5 to 3VDC as well. The only way to get both is an array. You can try the 5V 100mA cell, but I don't think it's enough current.
kiwipoo-there is no circuit really. I simply removed the rechargeable battery and put a super cap in it'[s place. The solar array is hooked straight to the cap which is hooked straight to the power leads on the board provided with the micro car. Materials are simply 5 of the solar cells, the super cap, and any off the shelf micro car.
I am trying to build something similar to your project but am having a hard time finding "high current cells". could you post a link maybe? Thank you.
Look for "super cells" at solar-world. Just match the solar cell output to your particular RC car's needs. For these micro cars, .5vDC @ 250mA x 5 in series is plenty of power.
This is a car I made just for the heck of it. It's built on a Zip Zap chassis and the body is made of sheet styrene. The capacitor is a 1Farad aerogel cap. The solar cells can be found online if you search for high current or NASA cells. The car is much faster on smoother surfaces. You can tell by the way it's jumping around that my garage slab is pretty rough.
thats dope, its smart to put a cap too for shade i would never have thought of that!

how do u connect solar cells with capacitor?
may i have the schematic?
thank you.

how long will this run in the shade? i noticed a 1F cap on it.
cheetawolf 1 year ago
@cheetawolf It will run for about 10 seconds in full shade. Just enough time to get back into the sun.

How do you know 200mA or above is needed for operation?

Why do u want to use solar array here? Can i use 5v, 100mA solar panel instead of 250mA solar panel?

how about the circuit? how did u arrange all the components ?

cool? can u list out all the materials needed in doing this rc car? your car is so cool!
kiwipool00 2 years ago
Hey, this is really great! Using a supercap and some solar cells, and the thing still runs pretty quick!

I used a 2.5v 1Farad capacitor.

How many volts are need this car?
sonysystem2 2 years ago
What is your RC car model's name?
sonysystem2 2 years ago
The car was originally a Zip Zap micro RC. But, any micro RC car will do.
