once or twice per year, I found myself hypnotized watching this concert and thinking when I was 19 years old, looking to this outstanding tour in the middle of the crowd in Rome. And makes me think about which privilege I had being there. Believe me when I say this gig will never be forget by every single human being attending it
@iesus68 Oh you lucky thing.....I regularly watch this footage and wish I was there, you can actually remember it. I also don't doubt that ALL there were amazed at how special this event was!
Yeap a Piece of Rock History...Byrne -Belew and ALL the others on stage. Was'nt Laurie Anderson on stage as well? Saw them in Montreux in the 80's Will NEVER forget what I have seen and heard. Many thanks for posting this clip. MAGNIFICENT as well as the other clips of that Rome show!
According to Brian Eno's autobiography, Belew was made to improvise over the existing backing tracks. Doesn't that make him a co-composer as opposed to someone told what notes to play ?
According to Brian Eno's autobiography, Belew was made to improvise over the existing backing tracks. Doesn't that make him a co-composer as opposed to someone told what notes to play ?
Fear of Music is surely my favourite! And Adrien Belew is just great. On YouTube you can also find Belew performing with Frank Zappa in "City of Tiny Lights" and others. Talking Heads, Frank Zappa, King Crimson... I agree: Phew! Can this guy play!! And David Byrne is just pure genius. Nothing less.
check out the funkadelic synthesizer by P. Funk keyboardist Bernie Worrell (to the right of Jerry Harrison). Jerry's like wtf are you doing on the keys!!?
Adrian is amazing. read interviews; he sez he tries to make instruments, his guitar etc. sound like other things. Notice the bagpipes there towards the end? what creativity!
The Talking Heads have amazingly energetic live performances from what Ive seen on youtube. Makes me wish I'd gotten the chance to see them live, as it is really different than the album. Hard to say if it's actually better though.
@FishTreeEstates As good as their first 3 albums go, the live versions of those tracks kill the studio ones...I think the reason remain in light is considered their best is because it's tracks capture their live scope. Easily one of my favorite bands
It's annoying how the sound is mixed such that the background vocals are louder than the lead vocals. Whenever the background singer kicks in, I can't hear David Byrne at all.
this is the best song to describe drugs to sober people in an understandable great context. after this song you are either that naive person taking them because of the minorchange in the woman's voice or you are that arrogant person that leaves them because of the minorchange in the woman's voice.
The funny thing is even when this was the new music on the radio people did not admit to liking it. Back in 1983 when "Burning Down the House" was near the top of the charts people acted like they did not know the song. I think back then people didn't want to admit the like Byrne because of his weirdness. Some people might have also assumed he was gay and back then it was bad to admit to being gay.
Not true about the gay thing back then.....In fact, with the music community, the public back then was much more accepting to the gay movement than we are today..We have regressed in that area...Case in point...Bowie, Jagger & Rod stewart was perceived to be Bi....Elton john....Mark Bolin and all the Glam rockers of those days, (which there was many), and even prior to that, you had Liberace and Little Richard...No one really had a problem with it...Now, the acceptance is lesser to a degree.
In the early 80's if a person was wearing a Twisted Sister shirt or a Motley Crue shirt they were considered "cool". If you has a talking heads shirt on people called you a fag.
cheezer57 your profile says you are 52 years old so I must assume you were talking pre-1980 with your statement .
I was talking about the 1980 to 1987 era.
Maybe in 1977 or so when you were 20 years old you were cool but once people saw the videos in the 80's that was the case.
You're correct..I'm 52...And I remember it very clearly... And I can't remember a solitary person who thought David Byrne was gay...But I can tell you, with great confidence, that even if they had, they wouldn't have given 2 shits....Okay ..Maybe lame Motley crue, or Twisted sister fans might have, but that only would have helped to solidified Byrne's allure, and not detracted from it...By the way...In my world, if you wore a Crue, or sister t, you were Fag squared.....No offense.
i saw them in 78, this tour and 82. this was the first concert i had to stand and dance for in my life (2nd and final was 82). they blew me away. i saw adrian a couple times before this with frank zappa in 76 but he really tore the roof off at these shows. never saw anything like this. and busta, well, thank you for these videos.
@jojojigaboo I actually think crosseyed gets more views because it has such a cohesive groove to it. That's why I like it so much, at least. Also, the crazy amount of energy to it, especially once the song kicks in after the opening.
@dinnerbucket9 True. But ya gotta admit Belew adds an element that wasn't there before. The guy kicked butt whether it was with Zappa, Talking Heads, or King Crimson.
Actually from what I have read the real tension was between Tina and Belew and it was because Belew was a bit too overzealous at times and people started overlooking Jerry's contributions in particular. I think at this stage though they were all getting along swimmingly. It was only after making the Tom Tom Club album that it boiled over when Steven Stanley erased some of Belew's solos from the masters. They are just gone, lost to all eternity.
I was under the impression that at this point Tina and Belew got along fine, to the point that she was lobbying for him to join the band full time (and according to David Bowman's book Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa - suggested that he replace Byrne in the band, which Belew understandably balked at). they later fell out over the writing credits on Tom Tom Club's self-titled debut
I do agree however that the cinematographers are spending a bit too much time concentrating on what Adrian Belew is doing. There are like 8 other people onstage and every time you hear a weird little noise they cut to Belew, as if he is the only one doing anything of interest.
That is Belew sounding pretty awesome. I wish they hadn't done the slow mo at the end so you could see him playing that bagpipe sounding lead section. Very cool stuff.
i've owned fear of music for 14 years and i never liked this song that much until i saw this version of it and now i recognize that it's seriously real bizness
Not so oddly enough, I think this represents the kind of ragged avant-garde funk Byrne was always shooting for. Sometimes it only wants to collapse, all in on itself, all broken and disarticulated....but, you know, the longing underneath holds the day.
Put this way: only 3 years after "77" they played to a crazy crowd in Rome with Adrian feeling very happy. Sometimes those "associations" don't work very well, not here.
QUESTA ERA LA RAI!Maledetti farabbutti!Quando avremmo rivisto queste MERAVIGLIE senza la rete??Chi gestisce la televisione pubblica italiana adesso dovrebbe vergognarsi!!
