Neil's death is one of my favorite parts in the movie. The way it's so quiet and he's just looking out his window and you just seem to know what he's thinking. You can feel that he's trapped and feel's theres only way out. Sucide. Great video one of the best I've ever seen. (:
he committed suicide because his father was going to force his son to become a doctor. But Neil wanted to become a actor ,no it was his dream to become an actor. He was good at it to but his father then found out and was going to force him to become a doctor by going through more school. In Neil mind he was thinking what the point of going through more school just to do something I don't love? It killed him inside then the rest is history.......
poor neil.i was watching this in english class and i wanted to cry so bad. plus i dont blame him for killing himself if he was alive it just gotten worse.
Well I don't approve of suicide (then again who does) to me there are other ways out, I have been in Neil's situation before, but I'm still here. However, in a way...since I've felt what he's felt...it's kinda understandable. I know it's a horrible choice of word, but some people are just too 'weak' to rise against suicide, sometimes...it's the only way they feel to be free.
This video is completely gorgeous. I love the way the music suddenly swells when his father wakes up, and I love the contrast between Neil's final moments and his memories. And thanks for making me cry again XD (sorry for my bad English, I'm from the Netherlands!)
I can see your view, and I do think Neil was weak...but you have to realize that he was brought up by an inconsiderate father, never being asked for his opinion, and the whole "don't question what I say. Just do it" mentality stayed with him till his death. Neil was still the child he was when he was young, scared of his father. And this is understandable, for his father damaged him psychologically.
All I see it as, is an interesting spin in the story that makes the ending OK than anti-climactic. The student that committed suicide was a weak person at best. I mean, if you're going to commit suicide over you being unable to voice your opinion against your parents- you're going to have a special place in hell for your weak, self-defeatism, selfishness.
Xaviers, Obviously you have never been in this type of situation before. This movie does a VERY good job showing how a parent can truly dictate what their child does. He was NOT selfish by committing suicide. U try having ur father tell u where u are going to school and what u are going to do for the rest of ur life. & then have him shut u down about anything YOU want to do. In this case Neils father is the selfish one because he is trying to do what he wants & does not care about Neil at all.
The student is selfish because he thought the only way to escape his father was to kill himself. Look at his situation: He lives in a high-middle class/upper-class family, he can attain decent material goods, he has a loving mother yet a hard father. The only downside is the psychological supressiveness that his father has towards him.
I'm not saying the father is right or good, I'm simply stating he had more options than to kill himself. For that, he's a blockhead.
Money and being upper-class isnt everything. You have one life, if someone dictates it and forces you to do what you dont want, whats the reason of living it then, if it isnt yours?
@brownteddy87 there is a line that his father crosses between teaching and dictating and thats very true and you make a valid point, but suicide is the most selfish act you can commit, no parent should ever have to bury their own child, i have seen what it can do to a parent and it is unbelievably sad... it makes for a more emotional scene in the movie, but in reality It would be a better idea for him to just run away or maybe realize how FORTUNATE he is...
@brownteddy87 I also saw it as the father wanting his son to do all the things that he (the father) wanted to do but couldn't, and not doing anything else. He wanted to live the life he wanted, vicariously, through his son, and in the process, killed his son's soul. That poor kid only killed his body, but his father killed his son's soul.
I actually didn't have any emotion towards this movie the first time I saw it, but when I saw it in class I almost cried myself. Actually, I'm astonished I was able to hold back my tears.
WOW! It's sad that he commits suicide, but I would to! This sonf is soooooooo awesome, what is it called? I have never herd this song before, but I love it! Great video by the way!
Thanks! Beautiful music too, by the way! Maybe I'll rent this movie someday! Along with Dead Poet's Society! It's such a great movie, along with Swing Kids!!!

Every time I see the father getting mad at him, all I think of is him as Red Foreman saying 'YOU DUMBASS!'

I personally think its about the Brotherhood of Death (Also known as Kapittel 322 or Skull And Bones) a secret Society that can only be found in Yale
President bush was a member of them.
you should do some research you will be surprised

please don't do that unless you've actually been at that point. I have, and you honestly have no idea unless you have too.

Imo, that suicide makes the movie ugly. I hate it. At least, don't make teens suicide their self. Especially if they still have parents.
Fuck.
