Midland Radio, Inc. used to show this tornado footage in the 1970s and 1980s, to promote the marketing of their weather alert radios. This was one of the scariest tornadoes I ever saw on TV in my life back then.
Not one of the stronger tornadoes but still - after 37 years - among the most spectacular. The suspended dust delineates so well the movement of air within the funnel. This is one of my top five favorite tornado videos. Whatever happened to Tom Grazulis, by the way?
The tornado was actually about 13 miles NW of Larned in Pawnee County...Not Great Bend that is in Barton County. Saw it first hand. It was a tough one!!!
It starts out as black. I did some environmental work on a pipeline project in Great Bend back in 2000. The soil there is black (except for a strip of sandy soil). We dug down 14 feet in one spot and it was just as black as on the surface. I'd like to have a few truckloads of that for my garden.

@vanhouten64 Tom still lives. His latest was creating the EF scale instead of the F scale. (i.e.. EF4 tornado and not F4).

That tornado was brown because it sucked up mud from the plowed field.

How come you can see an extremely fast glimpse of the 1953 Warner Robins Air Force Base tornado?
