This is one of my favorite performances by any artist.. Not even a huge fan of Janet's music, but this is what I call a PERFORMANCE. Wow, pure vocals. Janet killed it. And those are some very talented background singers. It's so hard to be that precise and consistent and obviously there is no room for mistakes when the only instrument is a keyboard. FLAWLESS!!
One of her best performances. Loved that she stripped it down and sang. Janet may not be Mariah or Chaka but this is proof that she can sing and what we hear on her albums is not so far from the truth.

I do agree that Janet has a unique voice, that no need to play high notes but soft as it is like Olivia Newton John. And she's one of a Diva that I admire when she sings live and dance with it as I've seen her concerts, her voice doesn't change. It seems you are listening a record though she sings live. That's one good talent. And besides she's one of a female pop artist that I consider to be a legend next to Madonna, Mariah, and other female that made great hits.

@horatio2 I totally agree. I saw a tribute to Janet and they fucked 'That's the Way Love Goes' ALL THE WAY up. It was just all kinds of wrong. It was Deborah Cox (if I had to choose who did best, it would be her and Heavy D), Chante Savage, and Brownstone all of which have strong voices, but just messed the WHOLE song up. And I think that's why she always gets awarded but never a tribute. The only person who probably could sing any Janet song well enough, is Aaliyah (at that particular show).

It is the job of her sound engineers to moderate this, and as in all things in life sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Those times that it doesn't our girl is misrepresented to the world. She is amazing. It's always great to hear her sit down and sing a live performance. That's more proof that she's not dependent on heavy production and dance moves to give a great performance.
I think she's a very good singer but we don't hear it too often cozz she loves to dance which can't be combined with too much singing. When she's like this u can hear her voice and know she's really talented, even in the singin field. She will never be beyonce or mariah but her voice does stand out, its different. I don't think one would expect an african american woman to have a singin voice like janet. I think it makes her unique. She can sing for sure, but she's not loud, nor was michael.
Janet doesn't have to hit those "Diva" fied high notes like Mariah Carey and co. in order to have good vocals and be a good singer. There are alot of Janet's vocals that can't be mirrored by any other artist because her tone is alot softer. Alot of Janet's songs are actually really hard musically wise to duplicate.

I agree that she's an icon but I don't agree that she's a good singer. Her tone is softer you're right - but to me, a good singer is one who can sing loudly with full chest voice. A great singer: throw in vibrato, belting, and high notes (not in falsetto). Just my opinion - I never said Janet was a bad singer though.

You people have go to be out of your damn mind not to realize that these are very strongs vocals. I mean are we all listening to the same video. To me, she is even belting out the notes. You people are crazy to try to call this not strong vocals. Even if I don't care for someone, I can at least admit when I hear strong vocals. Hell I wish I could sang like this.

@horatio2 I totally agree. I saw a tribute to Janet and they fucked 'That's the Way Love Goes' ALL THE WAY up. It was just all kinds of wrong. It was Deborah Cox (if I had to choose who did best, it would be her and Heavy D), Chante Savage, and Brownstone all of which have strong voices, but just messed the WHOLE song up. And I think that's why she always gets awarded but never a tribute. The only person who probably could sing any Janet song well enough, is Aaliyah (at that particular show).

@goya2973 I love Whitney, Mariah and Janet just as much as the next person. Whitney, I really don't see anything else going for her. I really don't wanna see her hang it up but I think its time for her to close up shop. Mariah still has her talent but Mariah is like a rollercoaster, she has too many ups and downs in her career. Janet was on top until the Superbowl. It blows that one negative thing can impact an ENTIRE CAREER. I wish all three nothing but love and success.

I LOVE Janet. however, when people say she "can't sing" I believe what they are refering to is that she has a very small voice. She doesn't have the depth and range that Mariah or Whitney have. Janet has a good voice and can sing well, within her limited range. What she IS, is an outstanding artist, a great song writer , and an amazing performer.

Yes! Absolutely, Fink, very elequently put. And there are circumstances when unfortunately her vocals are overpowered, not ideally mixed. It is the job of her sound engineers to moderate this, and as in all things in life sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Those times that it doesn't our girl is misrepresented to the world. But for goodness sakes! Listen to this everybody, as Smokey Robinson would say: "She can saaaaang!"

I think she's a very good singer but we don't hear it too often cozz she loves to dance which can't be combined with too much singing. When she's like this u can hear her voice and know she's really talented, even in the singin field. She will never be beyonce or mariah but her voice does stand out, its different. I don't think one would expect an african american woman to have a singin voice like janet. I think it makes her unique. She can sing for sure, but she's not loud, nor was michael.

Janet doesn't have to hit those "Diva" fied high notes like Mariah Carey and co. in order to have good vocals and be a good singer. There are alot of Janet's vocals that can't be mirrored by any other artist because her tone is alot softer. Alot of Janet's songs are actually really hard musically wise to duplicate.

I agree that she's an icon but I don't agree that she's a good singer. Her tone is softer you're right - but to me, a good singer is one who can sing loudly with full chest voice. A great singer: throw in vibrato, belting, and high notes (not in falsetto). Just my opinion - I never said Janet was a bad singer though.

And, she's already been honored as the first MTV's ICON, what does she need "divas" for? She's always stood out from the other entertainers, why would she need to share the stage?
