  • Meraviglioso, bellissimo.

  • phil blows this guy away

  • where's collins on vocals, its not the same

  • MI sciolgo.......

  • the drummer is great

  • Listen this version of Blood of the rootfots from "Bad Dreams" and then tell me. It's a live cover that include Steve Hackett's comment.

    v=JZU3T-CSbHQ

    I love this song.

    Bye people!

  • Ti amo.

  • @clockwork. Thanks for the info. I'll do that.

  • This is the first time I stumbled onto this. I was searching for other Genesis music. I saw the Seconds Out and Trick of the Tail tour. Forgive me. Who is this band? Is there more somewhere? They sound tight!

  • @rayb532 Thats Steve Hacketts own band. Steve is keeping the stuff he was involved in with Genesis alive. Check out his solo albums and if u need some Genesis in there try his Tokyo Tapes album -

  • soprano sax is dreamy

  • I think that this song is for the kids. One of the messages is: hey kid, why not be free off downloading a vulnerabilities into your head.

    ...

    Shit seems to have

    An invisible touch

    Yeah

    It eats control

    And slowly fixes butt's art.

  • Meaning: TV through the antenna "on the rooftops" replaced real experience. TV steals our motivation - skip the news, boy, while we make tea in safe homes. Hypnotized by Batman, Tarzan a surprise. Time for wine. What have I done to make a better world? Nothing? Oh well. There's blood on the rooftops, but wouldn't I rather watch Venice in the spring? Used to have real wars, now actors fight them for us on TV. Just feed us more Mother Goose tales. TV now launches 1000 ships, not Helen. Oh well...

  • @jeffteach this is a song of resignation,,,in a beautiful way...from time to time you resegenate, dont you ? And you should...I love that song...I dig its emotion...I don´t think it´s a call for political resignation, or resignation of any kind...It just describes a feeling....that´s only all too human and also legitimate

  • @somethingyettocome I agree with you. Before I looked into the details in the lyrics, I felt that peaceful resignation in the melody of it. So in a way it is at least two completely different experiences. Genesis is so incredibly gifted to have created a body of music that can awaken very special lost emotional states in us. "Blood on the Rooftops" is one of my favorite Genesis songs, either thru melody or in the words. => It's like you've fallen off a cliff & realizing your doom is also bliss.

  • @somethingyettocome Agree. "The arabs and the jews, boy. Too much for me". This song has 35 years and still in war.

  • @somethingyettocome

I have never really thought of it that way!

You may be onto something there. What I would say is that unless you are English & born pre 1970 85% of it will probably make no sense at all!

  • @98pup100

I don´t know, I `m German and born in 1975. I got into Genesis in 1986, and listened to them intensly throughout the late 80ies and early 90ies, buying all their all albums, playing their stuff to people. I don´t think I convinced too many people of their greatness...Anyways, blood on the rooftops was always one of my favorites. I keep coming back to that song...

  • @somethingyettocome

    Fair comment somethingyet : )

I think I may of been guilty of over exaggeration in order to make a point!

What I was really saying is that the song contains a lot of cultural & geographical references that would only make sense to a Brit or a true anglophile - The Queen's Xmas speech, The Wednesday night play on BBC1, the irony of it raining "again" in Wales, Cricket references, The Grime on Tyne.............. etc.

Shame not more people you know liked the band.

  • Hackett's a genius

  • brings tears to my eyes remembering all that teenage confusion. Would listen to this then go to youth club where everyone was into madness and bad manners. Hackett wrote some beautiful stuff with genesiseven if he does look more and more like John Major

  • Saw this song live in 2009 in leamington spa, magic

  • Hats off to the drummer.

Both hands, both feet, keep time, stay in tune, make the flams and hit the notes.

    Impressive.

  • That sounds like a great show. Thanks for the comment!

  • Goofd bloody job!

  • Breathtaking! One of his finest moments as a songwriter with Genesis...

  • AWESOME

  • please who can help a progger from berlin??;-)

what is the meaning of "blood on the rooftop" ?? iam understand the words, hat it means??? is it slang ???

  • @joha77johaa Dear Joha, It means that the television aerial on the roof of your house (rooftop) brings death, violence, war and destruction directly into your home through the television set (fernsehenaparat). The TV aerial creates "blood on the rooftops". I hope this helps you understand?

  • @Jonsumo dear jonsumo, MANY thanks to you. NOW I understand it...

    greetings to you from berlin

  • @Jonsumo Perhaps it should be retitled "Blood in the fiber optics". At least here in the States. Do love the song though.

  • Even a sub par vocal can't ruin the sheer beauty of this song...Musically there has never been a more melodic band than Genesis..33 years later this still gives me the shivers! : )

  • this guy did a great job on drums and vocals, BRAVO!

  • wot a great song....

  • One of the bestest songs.

    Ever.

    End of.

  • I have always loved the music of Genesis right from "Genesis to Revelation" to "I Can't Dance" just that each album had a different effect on me musically.

  • Danny your right.....................but sometimes I just can't hold back when individuals like that make ignorant comments. Have a great day.

  • Thanks. No biggie.

  • thegarmentroom...............................you moron you have no knowledge of Genesis as Ib can see from that comment

  • As a Genesis fan I understand where your comment come's from. In "MY" opinion us Genesis/ Progressive rock fans should use kind words to disagree with instead of the usual... you know what.

  • They never tried to replace Hackett in Genesis. Big mistake. It meant the end of good guitar parts in their music, one of the most important sides of Genesis music. Rutherford is an excellent bass player though.

  • if this guy can sing and play drums at the same time how come phil coul'nt do it?

  • temaso

    wind and wuthering

    no envejecio nada

    tremendo!

  • As one can see by my name I am a Genesis fan through and through, and this is one of my favorite songs by them. Simply brilliant.

badrogue66 is right about Hackett being a genius with a guitar, no doubt about it, and when Gabriel left, he definitely left a void that could not be replaced, and Collins filled in nicely, took them to fame and fortune, the band was never the same without Gabriel.Hackett, and Phillips.sorry folks, but that was the true Genesis, the only Genesis in my opinion.

  • f*cking great

  • great music! the vocals, well, lets just say, i've heard better

  • Yep. Phil Collins ;-)

  • The guitar chords aren't actually that bad

badrogue66, though I admit it DOES look odd on the camera.

What amazed me about this song where some of the chords. I prided myself on being able to work songs out on the keyboard after listening to them carefully.

Suppers Ready ? no problem ! Firth of Fifth solo ? Easy peasy.

but THIS one utterly defeated me.

I finally got the sheet music to it and - my oh my - it was wierd. Sheer genius. But wierd.

  • Hackett is a guitar genius, say what you want about the group after Gabriel left, but in my humble opinion, they really went downhill after Steve left, ToTT and Wind and Wuthering are 2 of my favorite Genesis albums. Whatever he brought to the table they certainly werent able to replace thats for sure.

  • @badrogue66 RIGHT !!

greetings from an old progger from berlin

  • @badrogue66 No argument about Hackett's guitar genius. But Genesis just went a different way after he left - I love W&W and ToTT, but (for example) Duke and Genesis have equally good moments, just in a different vein. The band's strengths changed and thus so did the sound.

  • @badrogue66

I agree completely. People are always talking about either the Gabriels- or the Collins-era of the band. But for me the real Genesis started when Hackett arrived for Nursery Cryme, and ended after the Wind And Wuthering album, when he quit the band (although I do enjoy parts of ...And Then There Were Three...). Blood On The Rooftops is my alltime favourtie song, of any artist. A great accoustic intro, great singing by Collins, and the mood set by Banks/Rutherford is simply amazing.

  • @badrogue66 I wholeheartedly agree. After SH left they became a pop band. A good one, granted, but nothing more.

  • @badrogue66 i totally agree i would love to see a full reform but i would rather see a reform with hackett that with just gabriel

  • i don't necessarily think so. I think if you like what Genesis gives to you, then you would have no problem with anything that the band put out, solo, or not. Phil Collins wrote this song, and this is a fantastic version of it. Wind & Wuthering was a "sleeper" of a Genesis album. Listen to it all, and maybe you'll see it differently...

  • @Merlyn974 Not sure I understand, there's no way you can say that this particular piece of music is even in the same ballpark as the dreck that is something like " I Cant Dance". As a Genesis fan I should say they are both great songs because they are by the same group? The group that wrote and performed W and W and TOTT in no way shape or form resemble what they became mid 80's / 90's and the quality of the music surely spiraled down after Hackett left, which was my original point.

  • @badrogue66 You, my friend have stated it perfectly. This cannot be associated with the latter Gen. When Hackett left, all style was lost and Collins took Tony and Mike down the drain.

  • @badrogue66 i agree, when Gabriel left the band was never the same. When hackett left, they were no longer genesis in my book.

  • @badrogue66 You may be right... there is still brilliant songwriting - after all that's what they started as - but the orchestration and song-writing just wasn't as brilliants diverse.

  • @badrogue66 to truly appreciate steve's sense of orchestration, listen to "Genesis Revisited"- I think it's some of the songs he wrote which were'nt quite the way he envisioned them originally, I love the sop sax in this

  • @flareonfire88 How do i get an answer or get to send a message?? I just want to know who the vocalist/drummer is??,I"m not flare on fire, but cant seem to do it any other way,/bit like Facebook for this 60 year old old F!!!!!!

  • Well not much of his stuff is impossibly hard, like "Firth Of Fifth". It doesn't have to be hard to be my favorite solo of all time. (Which it is.) But some of his stuff is hard as hell. Haha.

  • i saw them live doing this not long ago, it was fabulous.

  • The chord at :018,,,WTF!! How to you get your fingers to move to that position , in time, and then change out of that to the next....dont have enough time in the day or years in my life to be able to learn to do that.

  • @badrogue66

I'm neither a professional guitarist, nor one that prides himself with much experience, but I don't find this song particularly difficult. The position of that chord is actually pretty easy if you try--they tend to look impressive on camera though.

The difficult thing about this is rivaling the sheer beauty of its studio performance. It's one of those songs I listen to almost everyday wondering how to get such exquisite vibratos as Hackett did on the Wind & Wuthering recording.

  • it would be so great, with phil singing!

  • Just beautiful...

  • is that billy sheehan on bass by any chance?

  • no my friend ! but billy sheenhan is a great bass player !!

  • Comment removed

  • Absolutely Brilliant.. I hope they are still doing it for the 2009 tour I'm going :P

  • Best tour I saw Hackett on. This band was just fab. Great drummer.

  • wii we beautiful magifieko !!

  • lovely. just a touch more mellotron required.

  • I think the mix drowned out Steve's guitar on the album during the chorus.

  • the singer is very good!!!

  • I LOVE this song! However, one thing I've always found maddening about it is trying to figure out EXACTLY what it means. I understand it as telling the story of someone who floats through life day-to-day feeling detached and unaffected by major events swirling around them. Is that an accurate/reasonable intepretation, or am I missing the boat here?

  • Hackett's post-Gabriel Genesis piece. This gave me chills. Steve's drummer handles it well, too.

  • The only Hackett/Collins-Collaboration..and WHAT one..

    Unique in the Genesis catalogue.

This song is home for all my puberty moods back then and all my friends who got infected wheter they liked genesis or not.

  • Not the ONLY one - there's "For Absent Friends". Which is also quite pretty, though not nearly as gorgeous as this.

  • great for absent friend ... me also I love that song ...but Blood has power only with Phil ... not only for the voice ... Blood is with Genesis ! a great diference ... dont liked to listening this version!

  • the best masterpiece from Genesis-Phill-Collins era!!!

  • and ...Entangled... and Mad man moon, Los Endos ... but I agree that Blood on the rooftops is a masterpiece , Genesis for me has no eras , Genesis has what several band has ...changes of some member , evolution , It s obvious that we can have our personal opinion about it... me ,I love GENESIS in all eras... only!

  • This is the most beautifully crafted short song from the classic Genesis era. It's not surprising that Tony Banks said that he really wanted to play either this song or Many Too Many on the Genesis tour a couple of years ago. Instead, they chose Ripples, which ain't bad either.

  • I would have loved to hear them play this song too, and many other of their older songs. But I'm so glad they chose to play Ripples!

  • I agree that Ripples is a beautiful song, and I thought they did a nice job with it in 2007. I count it as one of the highlights of the concert. Actually, my biggest regret is that I couldn't resist checking the web for the setlist before going to the show. It would have been a wonderful surprise to hear them play Ripples if I didn't know about it in advance.

  • Yes, I did too! Before the show at a little "pre-concert party", someone had printed out the setlist and I couldn't help myself from reading it. After so many years of the rumors about the band possibly getting back together for a reunion tour, I'm so happy I was able to see them again.

  • hello Ripples blue girl... coming every size... It s nice to find another comment from you ... Many too many is a song that turn me back in to a year so difficult to me with my mother , and so coincidently I had only the album AND THEN ... I left home with it and listen about 8 months with a feeling that I ll never forget.. It is inside my soul forever ...and so many too many !

  • Hello again genesisinsideme! That was so nice of you to share this personal story. I too have many experiences in my life, some good, some not so good, that I always think of when listening to certain Genesis songs. It's amazing how just hearing a song can transport you back to another time and place & it's like you never left! :)

  • One of my favorite Genesis songs....

  • really?... it s a pretty song, genial , but for me there are more than "one" favorite songs , is not easy to choose few favorite songs ... I love many in the same way and intensity , for me its more easy to name the songs that I don t like ,, ja, ja!

  • Oh absolutely! Let me clarify this...It is only just "one" of my favorite Genesis songs, from a list of favorites. There would be too many to list here. To me, this is one of those songs that you don't hear too much about but is just so beautiful that I wanted to comment on it.

  • This singer does a great job here. What an awesome song. God! Beautiful. Do they even write 'em like that anymore? I guess close is the Leonard Cohen Live in London DVD. (Old through Then There Were Three) Genesis rules progressive rock, though.

  • i wish i could play good like this ...

  • My god this is good. Steve's band isnt too shabby is it ? :-)

  • That was Steve's finest creation, like Firth of Fifth showcases Tony.

  • Kenny G. joined the band

  • This song is a masterpiece and has historical / political / social value. A gem. I would like to see a lot of artist's do this piece.

  • I agree with you, I was SO lucky to see them live.>WOW

  • great!!!

    a god ensamble!

  • EXCELLENT VERSION NONETHELESS...

  • Very very nice version! The singer is not as elegant as Collins, but he isn't bad.

  • I agree. It was musically well done. But it does lack the Collins feel vocally. But nonetheless, acceptable.

  • yoy know, the more I listen to it I think it's better then 30 odd years ago.

  • You never know they got together to redo Carpet Crawlers.

  • Steve Hackett wrote this with Phil Collins

This is my favorite Genesis & they never play it. Why don't they just Throw out Land of Confusion (which makes me sick) and play this. Simply the most beautiful acoustic guitar I've ever heard. Close 2nd is Entangled which was Hackett Banks written. Please Lord Jesus Christ let Steve Hackett come back to Genesis!

  • agreed but it ain't gonna happen.

  • well said man! Totally agree.. steves guitar on Firth of Fifth is just awsome!

  • past is past... we can have in our heart Genesis , so they will be inmortals , and in honour of truth it s Steve that didn t accept return to Genesis, but I believe in magic and miracles can do Genesis revival! do mental power with all us...Genesians of all the times!

  • @jcoleman200743 Yes. I was SHOCKED that Genesis never played this amazing song during the Wind & Wuthering tour in 1977. Hey, Steve Hackett played with the band RENAISSANCE here in New York yesterday. WOW. Annie Haslams voice, and Steve's guitar. Beautiful.

  • @jcoleman200743 i am glad they don't play can't play this without steve

  • my fav Genesis song ;-)

  • It was better 30 odd years ago but this is still a damn good version.

  • id rather listen to this than any pumping amped guitar solo long live steve!!!

  • it`s so wanderfull, me dan ganas de llorar. pero de alegría.

  • This is one beautiful song

  • Hackett and Tony together were a awesome force! I loved this sung by the Phil beautiful voice

  • ...anyway, that intro solo is one the most beautiful works of art ever created in my opinion. * * * GENESIS FANS ***...the real genius was not Gabriel even though he was excellent. THE MAN was obviously, and still is, Mister Hackett. Pre-Hackett, Genesis is nice but nothing great....yes, even Revolver. And Post-Hackett descends slowly, surely and commercially into rubbish.

  • I agree, but i believe that the secret was the magic that came when Banks and Hackett came together, this song for example, Steve wrote the verse and Tony added the chorus. Plus they also co-wrote one of my other favourite songs 'Entangled' pure music.

P.S. they needed Gabriel to add that extra flare though

  • hackett & collins wrote blood

  • Steve and Phil ... must be playing together this song, I miss Phil here ... in Blood, great and genial song of Wind...

  • I felt the same way when I was hearing that. Phil's voice was needed at "Dark and Grey..." Wouldn't it be great to see Steve and Daryl together with the band for one tour - and Ant showing up to do White Mountain

  • I like justice...Phil and Steve wrote BLOOD ,,,that s the true , so...I would give all my blood to PHIL when he sings ...blood on the rooftops....

  • the song was write by Phil and Hackett ! I agree with eldanoth, Blood must be sung by Phil...nobody else! ...Genesis is magic all themselves together, Tony has the soul in the keabords, but Genesis are a plus of genius...all them make possible the magic!

  • I love this version even with its vocal imperfections. And this is not an easy song to sing. On the DVD, you see a quick shot of the drummer grimacing after a rough patch.

  • Very close to the original, except for the vocals. Almost like I would have sung it. Seems as if they just picked the drummer, in lack of anyone better.

  • Steve Hackett is the guitarist and one of the original members of Genesis who created this masterpiece. The vocals do spoil this rendition which is a shame, as I cannot find an original Genesis version on line and it is a very special favourite of mine, on the Wind and Wuthering Album (old School!). Can anyone help?

  • its about watching TV? i never listen to lyrics and put them together. who's the singer?

  • Great "cover" (even if the original composer is here on stage).

  • The best song Genesis never played live. The muscianship here is first class so it's a great shame the vocals are third class. Listen to Phil Collins on the Wind & Wuthering album - he's probably never sung better.

  • Third class might be a bit harsh, but the singer sure as heck isn't as good as Phil.

  • What a wonderful rendition of this most classy post-Gabriel song!

  • What a wonderful rendition of this most classy post-Gabriel song!

  • would loved to have heard Gabriel sing this!

  • steve, you're the genius mate!

  • di una dolcezza infinita

  • Phil Collins says Blood on the Rooftops is the greatest song ever written. What a compliment to Steve Hackett. It is one of the greatest songs ever made... If you want to purchase it, buy the WInd and Wuthering lp, by Genesis.

  • Collins' vocal is fantastic in the original. But those lyrics he wrote really do not match the feel of this song. It's about watching TV. I think this was one of his early attempts at lyrics.

Great cut though. Thanks for posting.

  • What an incredibly beautiful performance of that song.

    Where did you find this???

  • very nice! I absolutely refuse to watch or listen to any tribute band..I stick with the genesis purists in that regard. but when I scanned this and saw hackett strumming I had to watch. He legitimizes the performance. Enjoyed it, added to my favorites.

  • tre' bien

  • Beautiful stuff. Sounds better then on Wind and Wuthering. The more you listen to Hackett the better he sounds.

  • Such a beautifully romantic song. One of Steve's masterpieces. I'd love to hear Peter Gabriel sing this one.

  • That was WONDERFUL! Saw Steve solo back in '94 & it was greatBut THis! WOW would have loved to have been in the audiance. The other Lads og Genesis should take note ! When is Peter G. gonna stop being a prima donna & give us fans an original Genesis line up tour. We've all bought the solo albums ...Don't us fans deserve a tour? lol....80)

  • Wow! a thousand times wow! What a genius...

  • Absolutely brilliant.

  • I first saw Genesis play live in '76,I had no ticket but a mate at work was working the door that night & knew I was a big fan ,the venue was Stafford Bingley Hall,a glorified cow shed ,what a night !I loved the band already but seeing them play live blew me away

  • GENESIS !!!!

  • You`re Cristobal Colon!!!!!!!!!

  • STEVE HACKETT !!! Best guitar player EVER !!!!! Beautiful, thank you for posting this!!!

  • Please note if you love this song then you can see the entire 'Wind & Wuthering' and 'Trick of the Tail' albums performed live for the first time ever by G2 Genesis when they play Birkenhead Pacific Arts Centre on 14th March 2009!

  • i love this song!

  • Although I prefer Gabriel-era Genesis, I reckon this is my favourite Genesis song... Probably even my favourite song period...

  • True my friend. Screw the the money grubbing "war machine" and war mongers.

  • I find this song revelant in today's society........Ex. "Hypnotized by batman, tarzan, still surprised." It wasn't that long ago that people were being hyped for a film about an iconic character (The Dark Knight), in reality being distracted from real world conflicts. Ex "staying up late to watch some debate on some nations fate", the 2008 elections comes to my mind, I really dont think either canadate will be able make change for the U.S.

I find those connections freaky. Would anyone agree?..

  • I actually prefer his voice to Phil's.

  • Great version!

it is very differnet hearing this song without phil, but this singer does a good job.

  • And Genesis has NEVER played this one live....

  • Still speechless after 32 years !!

  • this is amazing

  • brilliant song! one of the the best genesis songs of all time

  • The Arabs and the Jews boy. too much for me.

  • excellent vocals by gary o'toole, but nothing can touch phil's version.

  • i rented this DVD and i must say THIS IS A GREAT SONG! i feel kind of bad that i had not heard this song before.

  • Great song off a great album. Very Good. Thanks.

  • one of the best Genesis songs ever.

  • The vocalist on this rendition is superb!!! Excellent I must say!! He sings it with such beauty!!!

  • goosebumps... one can only imagine the memories going on inside steve hackett's mind when moving his lips to the music...

  • Who is that guy? He can play drums and be third harmony in our band any day.

  • lol, thats great, love it

  • Thankyou to the guy who told me who the band members are kudos.

  • this is one of the greatest song created by steve hackett and genesis..God bless them!!

  • I love steve, because he always try to satisfy the fans..everyone was wishing to have a live version of this amazing, marvellous song..and so he did it..very nice version :)

  • Fajna wersja mojej ulubionej piosenki! Stev Hacket mial swoj wlasny niepowtarzlny styl gry.Szkoda,ze nie stanowil pozniej o charakterze muzycznym grupy Genesis.Wokalista naprawde daje sobie rade grajac jednoczesnie na perkusji.W koncowce niezle przycisnal.Niezle.Super Song.
