US deployed these rockets and nuclear cannon to Greece and i had to rott my childhood over their because daddy provided comm links to both systems. The cannon was a joke. it was stored in a pit that filled with water. the troops maning it were as good as dead.
yes its a surface to air missle...but they are fitted with a W31 nuke warhead...most were decom. by mid 70's, as the U.S. realized the real threat was from foreign ICBMs as opposed to bombers. The Atlas, Titan, and peacekeeper MX launch vehicles took over...but now, sub-launched BCM's are currently the ones in use. The only land ICBM still in use are the "minutemen" (from the 60's, and still goin strong)

Mit Nike Herkules war auch ein Boden-Boden - Einsatz möglich ... das es sich um eine nukleare Nike handekt erkennt der Experte an der "Baro . Fuse" (Spitze der Nike)
Nicely restored Nike Hercules and the base to go with it! Where is this launch battery? I'd love to see one in action! Do they have the control facility restored too?
Take the tour, It's a NUKE, it follows a high arc and detonates over enemy air formations crushing everything below it. NUKE NUKE NUKE It is a pretty cool tour and I like the fact you can ride down into the battery with the missle watch your toes!!!!
I dont think these are classified because the technology on them is so outdated like the "computer" that used mechanical gears to do calculus that told the missile when to blow up. we did get an exclusive tour of the missile site becuse I am in boy scouts (star rank) the guy took us underground into the missile hangars and we got to see the missile come up from the hangar on an elevator. it was really cool. it was filmed with an HP photosmart R927 camera
hey, yes very cool. my dad use to work whit the nike, and yes there anti-air missile but their also nukes, there made to destroy Russian air plane formations. (like jamie already told us)
SORRY PAL BUT THEY WERE NUKES TOO. I know because I worked on them and 10jake10 is correct becasue I was stationed in Italy too and we had them. The Italains owned the missles and we owned the warheads. It was serious business. I can't beleive you called a vet who would know an idiot! Arrogance!
Nike Hercules missiles were NUCLEAR devices with 2 kiloton, 20 kiloton and 40 kiloton yields. They started small and if needed jumped to higher yields to destroy incoming Russian Bombers. it would fly up about 25 to 30 miles high, then arch downward, detonating above the aircraft. The blast wave would then push downward on the aircrafts wings, shearing them off. As airframes are meant to take pressure from below(lift), they are fragile when forced down. Dead Bird Fall Fast!
OMG!!! I was in the US Army as an MP. I was a Senior Custodial Agent guarding these in Italy with the Italian Air force. They were Nukes too. It was kind of surreal! I'll show this to my son. Thanks for posting!
The first time I saw the non-nuclear warhead as a missile crewman trainee my first thought was that this was basically a very expensive shotgun system, a sophisticated way to throw metal rocks at an enemy plane.
LOl i was in the army in norway in 86 and we had this sytem, it was designed in the 0s but modded several times upto the 90s in the end we had to scrap it due to lack of parts from ths us lo we only had tnt warheads in this types of missiles cause we dont allow nucks on norwegian soil hhahah but we had the system to launch it. cold war ass history.

ow, but jamie don't call them small nukes if this baby will hit the ground it will be much bigger than Hiroshima ore Nagasaki.
Warhead nuclear 2kt, 20kt, 40kt
By comparison, the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, had a yield of approximately 12 Kilotons.

Sweet piece of history. I'm going to go play Missile Command now (of course, those Nikes take less time to launch!)
