They pull on them to increase the likelihood that they'll fall as the loser is determined by whoever hits the ground first though they're both punished the same.

The pull is also the reason they usually spin while fighting.

Another reason is it's a tie up, if I grab my opponents right shoulder with my left hand and he doesn't do the same to me, I can limit the damage he does with his right hand, while I freely throw my right! Also when this happens I can pull my opponent toward me while i punch, increasing the damage and push him away when I cock back to limit his damage!

Thats the dumbest thing I ever heard. They have great reasons for fighting. It keeps the other players in line so if a player does a dirty hit then later in the game he gets rocked or gets beat up in a fight by some on the other team to put him in his place.
