Unlike some other performances of this Concerto, Martha plays it in the same tempo as Rachmaninoff's original recordings and the result is a magnificent performance which captures the fire and passion of Rachmaninoff's spirit. He would smile to hear it. Brava, Martha. Bravo, Maestro Chailly, as well, for knowing instinctively how Rachmaninoff wanted this Concerto to play out. Perfect sympatico between Martha and Chailly. Thank you for sharing.
@paderuski1 I'd agree but I'd also point out that she plays it with much more pathos and involvement than Rachmaninov's interpretation. Personally I don't much care for his own recording, but this one is brilliant.
@malikrox Perhaps if we could WATCH Rachmaninoff play this Concerto like we can watch Martha, we would get all the pathos and involvement we could ask for. Rach, himself, agreed with an interviewer that his striking presence on stage was a factor in the reception of the audience to his music. What a loss for us that he never visually recorded his performances. I still favour his interpretation but, certainly, each to his own.
When her "Superman" curl becomes part of the show, you know Superwoman is performing. Thank you for the upload. Sitting listening to this is what my Music Appreciation was talking about many years ago. Brilliant, just brilliant. Bravo Martha.
Damn, how this woman can play! Not only that, she simply dominates the stage by the sheer force of her personality. She just seats herself, very lady-like, at the piano, then proceeds to kick everybody's ass!
My favourite performance in recorded history...just gets me every time...I couldn't admire someone more...and I think Chailly is so cheesy and into it because he realizes he is part of a 'history in the making' performance.
Vi sono molti aggettivi che si possono dare a questa magnifica ed interessante interpretazione. Tra quelli c'è anche l'aggettivo "spaventosa" (in senso positivo, ovviamente!)
@MrMikadelic MARTHA ARGERICH NACIÓ EN ARGENTINA EN JUNIO DE 1941. SE CASÓ TRES VECES, DE CADA MATRIMONIO TUVO UNA HIJA. MR. MIKADELIC: PUEDES PROPONERLE UNA CUARTA BODA
to be able to memorize this masterpiece on the piano and not have a music sheet in front of you to read just boggles my mind. i just attended a concert to see the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra and a man named Jon Kimura Parker played the whole piece by memory. Simply AMAZING performance by him and Martha!
I seriously want to smack the camera man. He doesn't show her hands during most the amazing parts of this concerto. At 10:40 he should be shooting her hands and nothing else! Why is he getting shots of the conductor and her face. I want to see her amazing hands! lol
@mmoynan hi! yeah, I do also love that and I especially noticed it the first time I watched this video. Its really just in time for the upcoming context in the piece. What I love about Argerich is that her playing as well as her bodily gestures are just so natural at the piano - unlike others' which seem to be just so deliberate, unnecessary and out of context.
Arguably (but not for me because I am convinced) the finest Rach 3rd you will find. Horowitz? Rachmaninoff himself? Gieseking? Who they? Seriously, I like them all in this piece but they are a shadow next to Argerich here.
God, that eighth minute is incredible! It typifies everything that makes Argerich the greatest pianist of her generation. She starts with that passionate and luscious legato and builds and builds into an incredible torrent. Just when you think she can't build it any higher, she somehow manages to squeeze even more out of the music. The whole orchestra just feeds off her passion and energy. Incredible!
BRAVO BRAVO MARTHA!!!!... ... ESPERO ALGÚN DÍA TUS COMPATRIOTAS DEJEN DE HIPNOTIZARSE CON CHARLY GARCÍA Y TODA SU CORRIENTE.. ... Y TE VALOREN EN FORMA MASIVA POR SOBRE EL POP QUE ABUNDA EN SUS CABEZOTAS.
¿Hay algo que la Sra. Agerich no toque....bien?

@Valk72 Really? The first movement of Alkan's piano concerto for solo piano is almost as long as the entire 3 movements of the Rachmaninoff!
thegreatapologist 3 months ago
@thegreatapologist
That's not the duration that make this concerto so difficult for the pianinist but the technical skill it demands.
