@qrwamqc Thanks, had a listen to mad dog mcrae's performing Whiskey in the Jar, certainly is a rocked up version of the old Irish folk rag, makes for a great aerobics work out too. lol. Also check Irish Celtic Cornish Folk Rock - Mad Dog MCrea Perranporth - that's real nice whistling. We talking about the same mcrae? Can't see how mcrae would have anything on Luke Kelly, but nevertheless he's also good entertainment value.
@wackee08 Do you mean that nobody should play it at all? Rofl! It's a traditional Irish song written a few centuries ago so, theoretically, anyone who plays it now is covering it. The Dubliners didn't write it, they just made it famous. I also think they did the best version of it, especially with Luke singing, but the other covers I've heard are good, also. Peter, Paul and Mary, Thin Lizzy and Metallica all did good versions.
Peter Paul and Mary did a version of this song on one of their albums in the 60's. They performed it as "Gilgary's Mountain". It had a different beat but was true to the lyrics. I've never been able to get it out of my head. My mother was as Irish as a pradie.
@ScotlandMarco Correction. Metallica did an interesting cover of the song which introduced it to a whole new generation of people which in turn introduced a lot of them to the Dubliners (and probably Thin Lizzy, too) which, in my books, is a good thing.
@ScotlandMarco I just want to add that the Metallica Version is a Thin Lizzy Cover; so they ruined it first. the ruining (from the original) metallica did on top of that is minimal.
And out of respect for other cultures, to every man his own.
haha, I'm from upstate NY in the US and I've been listening to so much Irish music over the past 6 years I'm starting to pick up a brogue when I talk. thank you mister Kelly
the accents are different the cultures (whilst both celtic) are on very different tracks, ireland is predominantly strong catholic whilst scotland is mainly strong protestant and the traditional music of ireland is very different to that of scotland. Theres quite a bit different really
Yes you are right Sirius711,when it comes to today, but to an outsider, we were taught that in ancient times, what is now Scotland was conquered by a tribe fom Ireland called the Scoti.the religious and cultural differences you mention have really only occurred in the last 1000 years or so.
Accents can change very quickly and have noticably done so in my own country even in the last 30 years!.
Luke sounds more honest to our 2007 ears because of his tone and interpretation.Ronnie had a idiosyncratic syle that didn't always suit the material, but don't forget the Dubliners were a BAND, not just Lukes backing group.
They all added to the chemistry that made the music timeless and thrilling.
Love this song and its cool refrain - take your pick: "Mush a ring a ding a da", and it's "Ri too ral laddy O" instead of "Whack fol de daddy O",

@CViFi Metallica's version is an abomination of Thin Lizzy's arrangement! I'm a Metallica fan, but they butchered this song.
