  • it really is The Greatest Raid of All... i am a Mexican National, i live in northwestern Mexico and i doubt there are a 1,000 mexicans who know or care about it, i pay tribute to such uncommon valor, such spirit, such moral character! i am deeply touchéd by the sacrifices made for ALL mankind by Britons, Americans, etc but specially Brits since you entered the war out of moral ground not because you were attacked... Descansen en Paz, HEROES DE LA OPERACION CHARIOT!!

  • How I laughed when Jeremy told us of Beatie's comment on the bridge just after Cambelltown hit the gate and sailing through and still in a firestorm from hell.....(.in upper crust RN speak!)...Well there you are,......4 minutes late!!!!!, wow now that's the RN right there.

  • @TheAngus42 YES I DID TOO!! typical english flemish i guess... i really admire your Country and what i stands for, i only hope my country, Mexico, can get somewhere near your country on Democracy, Education and moral standing....

  • Love it

  • Great! Wonderful! Honor and duty are the ingredients of true soldiers.

  • im thinking. why the memorial was so small? cos its not british soil. its french. this shows how much the french gave a fk when it came to remember these brave men.

a small stone. in front of a carpark.

  • 0:30 i rofled so hard

  • Yes a first class doc, 65 years later, what a change, riots in london what has changed to the british mentality, money

  • man, these guys are the real life james bonds!!

    what an awesome mission

  • Indeed one the Greatest raids during WWII. I believe in the 50's there was a film made about this event. Wouldn't it be a great idea to remake this film with modern technology and real fact? I am number 1 to line up to see that movie. Mr. Spielberg or Mr. Hanks, please repond if you're watching.

  • Unfortunately the youth of today are so egocentric and self centred that they wouldn't even consider putting themselves forward to do an act for the benefit of others, especially as there is no material gain for them and a high chance of losing their insignificant lives. It's the way the country has gone, from post industrialisation to a rentier and financial economy. The men who did this lived in a unique time,we had an empire, mass heavy industry,we were the workshop of the world, worth dying for.

  • amazing amazing amazing!!!! brave bastards!!!

  • They sohould have been given a bigger monument, for their hard work and sacrifices they made during that raid, What do u think?

  • @Dalekhunter101

size doesn't really matter. See the huge Stalin or Kim Il Sung monuments celebrating mad criminals.

  • Superb documentary.

  • Strangely, the Cambelltown was full of crates of Scotch, cigars and other treats, almost as though they were trying to attract Germans on board before she blew up!

  • Thank you all, we owe you everything.

  • No words and no medals can express nor reward there outstanding bravery.

  • These men are so modest about their bravery and achievements it is hard to find the words which sufficiently describe their valour. We owe them everything for the peace they won for democracy. Now, alas, the rabid banksters with their squalid servitors masquerading as politicians and judges are implementing the tyrannical Soviet and Nazi tyranny (EU) from which these men and others of our fine Allies gave all to save us. Let us not let freedom die from Europe. See democracydefined (dot) org

  • Read up on the Zeebrugge Raid way back in World War One, very similar plan with a submarine filled with explosives.

  • Amazing.. Brought tears to my eyes.. Thank god i moved to England ! Love this country to bits ! Well done brits ! Brave brave men !

  • wow! that operation took a lot of balls!!! These were truly amazing men!! Why such a small momument to them? My respects to these fighting men.

  • wat is the music at the beginning of this clip?

  • Comment removed

  • @collymc12 The music is DJ Shadow - Stem

  • Using those small wooden boats wa suicidal; a pity they didn't have another option / or boat.

  • The British audacity courage, and ingenuity during WW2 was absolutely unequaled by anyone. I did not know the details of this raid, and feel very grateful to these men. Their courage raised all of humanity; there nothing more noble in this world.

  • just grateful to OUR people who loved our country and wanted freedom for us no matter the cost to themselves. We are constantly told we cant operate our country without hordes of foreigners, but when we look at OUR history it tells the real truth.Thankyou for my freedom and your incredible sacrafice. We wont forget you.

  • four minutes late, outnumbered by 20 to 1

  • this was INSPIRING.. am a international student in London right now.. first Shengen i get, am going off to St Nazaire, Arhem and normandy.. to salute men who will inspitre generations to come..

  • A movie was made of this operation. I wonder why scenes from it weren't used.

  • @funkyalfonso Has it?, can you name its title perhaps, it seems most interesting I had no clue there's a film.

  • @Stoner075 I did some research and found it. It was a 1968 movie called " Attack on the Iron Coast " starring LLoyd Bridges and there is the trailer on youtube and a dvd has been released. Good film that seems factual from the details given in this documentary.

  • Can't help but fill up when I hear these kind of stories..

  • I kind of feel sorry for the Jerries that died on the ship. Not the best way to die after the battle is over.

  • True heros!! There should be more than a small rock in their memory. I would hope there is a monument in France commemorating their action. This would make a hell of a Hollywood movie!

  • we are a tuff bloody lot ar'nt we us brits wow betide anyone who under estimates the pluck of a brit.

  • wow those triggers were really slow

  • @Karletto555 someone forgot to carry a 1 perhaps.

  • a game call commandos behind enemy lines if you want to know some unknown mission and if i remember this mission is also in that game too.

  • The kilted soldier at 1:10 is a Liverpool Scottish soldier. A platoon of LS Commandos- No 5 Troop 2 Commando participated in the St. Naz. raid. They fought in the Regimental Forbes tartan kilt-the last time British troops fought in battle in the kilt-a little known fact. The injured soldier at 1:10 was severely wounded in the head by a grenade blast-he died within three days. Germans delighted in photographing up his kilt. RIP Pte Tom McCormack- Liverpool Scottish Commando & son of Liverpool

  • A story that every boy should learn, a story of true courage, bravery, strength, teamwork, will and absolute madness. we owe them a great debt.

  • Britain isn't broken. We still produce fine men that serve in afghanistan. Young men have fought in the Falklands, Balkans, N.I and many other places and they will continue to do so.

    God bless the British!

  • @m52spy: Amen to that.

  • @m52spy ....... no offence to you...... but i hate it when people say the british army fought in northern ireland.......it gives this impression that the ira were soldiers who came out and fought the british army.......when in fact they did no such thing.......the odd car bomb.....bombs in shopping centres......the odd sneaky bomb planted on a coach full of soldiers .....shooting unarmed soldiers........ i apoligise for mentioning the ira on this video.....these men are real soldiers

  • My Grandfather was a Commando in this raid. He served in 2 Commando was shot a captured in St Nazaire. I have read all the books on this amazing raid, but this brought me to tears. If only I could be half the man my Grandfather was!!! Thanks for posting 2bn442RCT and thanks to all the brave men that fought that night in France!!! Lest We Forget!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Yes he survived and escaped a few months later! He made it back to England and joined the Paratroopers! Obviously, he thought the Commandos was a bit to dangerous!!! pfft! Tough old buggers!!!

  • The most unlikely people show their colours in war I reckon.

  • OUTSTANDING! I have never heard of this operation. Thanks GD.

  • The Raid of Saint-Nazaire is one of those operations that should get more time in history books, but unfortunately it doesn't. Easily one of the most audacious raids of all time.

  • @SgtSplatter782 the reason its not heard of is because the only american in it was the cambletown so holiwoods not intrested.

  • @blobby1972 Why turn to Hollyood to have this story told? I am NO big fan of "Hollywierd" but they are in a business and that business is to make money. As much as I would even like it, they are not obligated to tell every tale of heroic deed from around the world. It costs money to make a film. Investors want to make money off box office/DVD sales. Hollywood is in America. They are going to produce movies from an American point of view. Other countries have to get off their asses.

  • thank you, great series

  • As always GD Thanks - Rob

  • The monument in Falmouth is so small that I have several photos of that very car park but did not notice it.

I have even got shots of that car park on one film here on you tube!!!!
