I love this song. It went from scary aliens to the king is crowned to the climax of a movie to a final battle to crazy mental guy to the credits of a movie or show.
yes the opening bars remind one of alien... I had heard this was Holst's favourite movement. Classic FM always play just Jupiter or Mars. This is one of the most haunting and moving: I can just imagine a regal elderly person reaching their end dramatically yet peacefully!
Exactly! the old man of time. We never escape our fates. Every day is one less you have, the sands of your hour glass run down, never up..
Pay attention to the passage of time.
Someday the glass will run. You never escape karma, oh you can try, but the results of your actions will come and hunt you down. Yet death is not be feared. It is just another doorway to walk through. The stars await!
I heard this music the first time in 1966, I am 60 now.
@Mellisa582010 The more I look at Holst' music, the more I see how people have copied him throughout the 20th and 21st century. It's like green license plates here in Massachusetts, once you see one, you just keep seeing them.
@FreemanLambda LOL LOL - Very true. Even when movies don't use the exact music I detect similarities, Science fiction movies especially. I think one of the war scenes in Gladiator used a Hint of "Mars" I heard this symphony, first, when very young, I don't know why but while my contemporaries were fainting at Beatles concerts I was discovering music like this. It was just what attracted me most even in my teens.
I don't know why but it reminds me of Walking with Dinosaurs--or maybe I should say The Walking with Dinosaurs score was reminiscent of this, but I saw that before I heard this...
I love Saturn. When I first heard it, I was so creeped out xD because at one point it sounds like it's ticking and idky but that just creeped me the fuck out. But I loved it so much at the same time 8D

In reality there is no time and space and life is eternal. If we do not learn that here we will learn that in the next world.

It's been ages and ages since I saw the movie, but something in this is reminding me of the music from Alien.

Dark, gloomy and atmospheric. I bet Jerry Goldsmith got his inspiration from this.

@wandererlain Yeah, I think so too. I think goldsmith got a lot of inspiration from Planet Suite.

the ticking part, the clock, it's supposed to respresent the returns that saturn makes during a person's lifetime. listen for the cressendo.

sorry Freeman.. perhaps if I explain. I am a Gnostic Hermetical Christian. Do some research, if you are curious.
An excellent cure for Saturn is Mars.. .or, even, better Venus! (-: But definitely NOT Pluto!
(poor Pluto, its not even a planet any more!)
