Obviously it's a song about God... then again, pretty much every song Bono has penned in the last 15 years are about God in one way or another. It was originally Bono w/ Daniel Lanois on the soundtrack for "Million Dollar Hotel" but was later released by Daniel Lanois w/ Bono on Lanois' CD "Shine."
To me the lyrics are quite simple. God says everything will eventually bow to Him and Daniel is singing about that and how he wants to just be able to surrender to what His will is.
Not necessarily for God but gods, fake or true, something to do with our inner matters. As Lanois have made a song Learning how to crawl, the idea is pretty much same in here.
When you are old enough, you really try to learn to be humble and concentate on things that really matters. Skip ivory towers etc. Looking for yourself in the middle of all b-shit. Imo that's the case.
I think he's writing about the vanities (which are so to some) which fall away, in the end, so to speak. In this sense, its a beautiful song about hope, knowing that acne, a drunk chasing away troubles with booze, abuse, useless radio waves, big ideas.....all fall down. He writes "teach me to surrender", meaning the ego. When we surrender our pride for vane things, we a re free.
Dude, it's a little straight forward, but that's okay...it's about the overwhelming amount of shit that weighs on God. Can you imagine the pressure? All the pleas at night, all the teenagers with acne...it would be a lot to handle even for the omnipotent.
@sstyblo - Imagine you create a child, give it free will, and then watch it destroy itself! Sometimes there's happier endings but spiritual lessons are exhausting work. I don't really understand it life or God. Peace.
That was a great performance! Bono's reading the lyrics and still delivering on the vocals shows how good he is. Most of the time when looking down at the sheet he just looked like he was lost in the music, so it worked with this slow song, except he gives it away when he moves the paper with his foot! LOL
bono doesn't even sing on the album cut until the end of the song, where he blends into the chorus, and then takes the lead. he sang his lead part perfectly without looking at lyrics on the video. What's the big problem with him reading some lyrics to a song he never sang before?
I don't doubt Bono is reading the lyrics to this song. After all, it is a rarely played song from an album most people don't even know exists. Also, Bono has been known to forget lyrics to even bigger songs.
danny is right...its an average performance....and i didnt realise that you had to have multi platinum albums before you were allowed an opinion. He could be a bloody musician for all you know.
Integral part of U2 has always been Daniel Lanois. This is a beautiful coming together of great individuals becoming one.

Really love this song... makes me feel inexpressible
Does anyone know who wrote the lyrics? It's like a prayer... it seems to me like Bono's work but I'm not sure :o)

I don't know why so many people are giving quileucru so many thumbs down - this is definitely a Daniel Lanois song -- just listen to his solo stuff

Right, but Bono wrote the song with him and performed it (on Million Dollar Hotel in 2000) before Daniel did on Shine (2003).
