My parents were very much in love during the war, and her letters to him kept him going. I have his letters back to her, often written by flashlight in a foxhole...Songs like this reminded the soldiers, from every country that home, and love, were waiting for them when the nightmare of war ended.

My dad was a US serviceman during WWII, and never got over the horrors in which he had to participate. He used to sing this song around the house when I was a kid in the 1960s. What I love about this song is the way it was loved, in numerous countries, in numerous languages, because love, like God, is universal. I adore Marlene Dietrich, even more so because she was a staunch anti-Nazi and was one of the first Hollywood stars of WWII to sell War Bonds for the US. I was born in Germany in 1949. Dad was a GI stationed in Germany and Mom a 24 year old girl from the Black Forest. The war was a tragic time with tragic consequences but singers like Marlene Dietrich and Vera Lynn remind us that people on both sides of the conflict felt pain, sorrow and endured incredible loss. As children, grandchildren and great grandchildren of those who were caught up in that conflict, we need to stop accusing and continue the healing they would want as their legacy.

Meine Mutter mochte dieses Lied sehr. Es erinnert mich immer an sie. Allerdings höre ich es lieber von Lale Andersen. Marlene ist mir unsympathisch. Das war sie schon, bevor ich überhaupt wusste was sie getan hat. Dass sie das Land verlassen hat, kann ich sehr gut nachvollziehen, doch dass diese Frau für Soldaten der gegnerischen Seite gesungen hat, übersteigt mein Verständnis.

Not all Germans were evil. Many Germans soldiers were just as good as the allied soldiers (not much on the Soviets). Many were not ardent Nazis but they were spurred to defend the Fatherland from their enemies and not from the Fuhrers mad rants.

Thank you for asking, tzcamm, my Dad sang it in English, which you can hear on YouTube. He loved Germany, as I do, and I recently got to go back for a two-week, much-too-short visit!... My parents were very much in love during the war, and her letters to him kept him going. I have his letters back to her, often written by flashlight in a foxhole...Songs like this reminded the soldiers, from every country that home, and love, were waiting for them when the nightmare of war ended.

My dad was a US serviceman during WWII, and never got over the horrors in which he had to participate. He used to sing this song around the house when I was a kid in the 1960s. What I love about this song is the way it was loved, in numerous countries, in numerous languages, because love, like God, is universal. I was born in Germany in 1949. Dad was a GI stationed in Germany and Mom a 24 year old girl from the Black Forest. The war was a tragic time with tragic consequences but singers like Marlene Dietrich and Vera Lynn remind us that people on both sides of the conflict felt pain, sorrow and endured incredible loss. As children, grandchildren and great grandchildren of those who were caught up in that conflict, we need to stop accusing and continue the healing they would want as their legacy.

Meine Mutter mochte dieses Lied sehr. Es erinnert mich immer an sie. Allerdings höre ich es lieber von Lale Andersen. Marlene ist mir unsympathisch. Das war sie schon, bevor ich überhaupt wusste was sie getan hat. Majka mi je Ruskinja,a otac Nemac,rodjen sam tamo,preselio sam se ovde kad sam imao 6 godina,i jos imam Nemacko drzavljanstvo.Sada imam 19 godina i krsten sam u pravoslavnoj crkvi.
Ne podrzavam nijednu stranku iz Srbije,narocito ne ldp.
Ne furam svoj fazon,vec razmisljam GLAVOM a ne SRCEM,a Srbi su opteretni ideologijama komunizma i nacizma,jer ne vide resenje.
Srbija treba svoju industriju i ekonomiju,nista vise,sve se ostalo samo popravi.

God I love this song. I have a cd recording that was taken from vinyl and it is nowhere as clear or vital as this recording. Like Vera Lynn this song brings sad ideas of WWII to the mind, eyes and ears.

Just listen to this, this is a beautiful song. I do not understand why our human mind needs to connect something to 'horror' and 'awful things' that happened in the past to something that just sounds beautiful..still today. It's about two people who fell in love and the times were tough because of the the war and that is 'all' that she is singing about. Sometimes it's worth to 're-think' your perspective.

@AxisPack Die Nazis habe durch ihre Ideologie die wuderbare vielseitige deutsche Kultur total verzerrt und auf den Kopf gedreht. Haben es ausserdem verstanden einen grossen Teil des in jener Zeit verzweifelten Volkes auf ihre Seite zu ziehen. M. Dietrich hat auf ihre Weise die Konsequenzen daraus gezogen. Andere haben direkten Widerstand geleistet oder in der Sowjetunion und in anderen Ländern den Widerstand organisiert. Das heisst besser "Volksretter" und nicht "Volksverräter".

Not all Germans were evil. Many Germans soldiers were just as good as the allied soldiers (not much on the Soviets). Many were not ardent Nazis but they were spurred to defend the Fatherland from their enemies and not from the Fuhrers mad rants.

Danke für die Bemerkung, aber doch. Der Ausdruck, etwas “ins Blaue hinaus” tun, bedeutet ungefähr: impulsiv, ohne Plan und ohne Verständnis handeln. Das Verbum “kohlen” bedeutet sinnloses reden, und entspricht z.B. dem englischen Wort “to babble.” Also, keine ganz falsche Beschreibung von dieser Diskussion, nicht wahr?

Gut, Freund, ich gebe zu daß “kohlen”, als Verbum, weniger gewöhnlich ist als die Synonyme “schwatzen” oder “plappern.” Jedoch ist es ein gutes Wort in der deutschen Sprache, man findet es in Erzählungen, und es steht geschrieben in Wörterbücher. Ich habe es erst in dem “Zauberberg” gefunden, wo der Erzähler sagt daß der Hauptarzt “kohlt” wenn er irgendwelchen Unsinn redet. (Eine herrliche Geschichte, ganz nebenbei.)
So, wollen wir leben und leben lassen? :-)
