What's interesting about the Rex's maiden voyage is she broke down near the Straits of Gibraltar and many passengers opted to take the Europa instead. Much to their surprise, the Rex was already there upon their arrival.
The REX is a beautiful Ocean Liner. As I told you 9 months ago, I chosen my path. For the Ocean Liners, I am willing to crave power, go into the darkness, be curse, consume by evil, & turn into a complete zombie just to be with the Ocean Liners & serve on them. I can't go back to the American way. It isn't my way anymore.
It is such a shame to see what elegance and beauty the world has lost because of war and greed. If not for WW2 the age of the ships may have lasted another 20 years beyond what they did. So many lost, Rex, Bremen, plus all the great ships broken up or retired after the war. I think only the Queen Mary is all that is left of those heady times
Great video. My wife's father came over from Italy on the Rex in 1933, and this is a great compilation. I'm going to share it with her family. Thanks for posting this.
The music, the pictures. Thank you, Willembrock. My family is from a village outside of Naples and from Turin. This Italian American is grateful. I'm sure I've watched this video 30 times plus!
I am still awed by this video. My maternal side is 100% Italian--Petrella and Re are my maternal names. I swell with pride when I watch this video--and can seldom watch its end. Thanks again for this post!

So, all you who know me, know my love of the great liners who ran the Atlantic run: from Titanic to Queen Mary 2. The greatest liner Italy every produced was the SS Rex. She did not survive WWII. Nor did France's pride, Normandie, or Germany's pride, Bremen. WWII is one of the few wars one could justify, and yet the co...st was still so enormous.
I mind is made up. I've chosen my path, I'm ready to go though the darkness &/or be curse & become a zombie to serve the Ocean Liners that I love & sail the Ocean Liners in service now
What is it about Ocean Liners that I can't get over. I feel like I'm guadully turning into a zombie. I don't think it matters, I love Ocean Liner like Rex. If I go dark or become a zombie, so be it.
I'm an American of Italian descent who loves the ocean liners of the past (I'm even a member of the Titanic Historical Society). The Rex was the greatest ship my fore-land ever created; her death is a travesty.
This is a mighty tribute to this, our--Italy's--greatest ship!

Why do you think the Automobile industry is becoming extinct?
Union Fat Cats get elected by winning outrageous concessions for their workers that eventually put the companies out of business and the jobs disappear...but not the unions. protected by the President who won't wave the Jones act to allow
In poche parole il "Titanic" italiano, solo che era per qualche centimetro (268,8) più corto del Titanic (269)... e poi ha vinto anche il nastro azzurro: ORGOGLIO ITALIANO!!!!!
Good point - the two funnels don't work aesthetically. It's almost as if the Rex was designed as a 3-stacker but they decided at some point to have only 2 funnels. The profile's balance was compromised.
El Rex era un transatlántico bellísimo. Inolvidable en la película "Amarcord" de Fellini: la música de este film (Nino Rota) le habría ído mejor al vídeo :) Gracias!
@willembrock Most wonderful to have found this tribute along with the music. Travelled recently on the Celebrity Constellation where this wonderful music played at midnight as we left the German port of Warnemünde. Hundreds of people were gathered to see the ship depart at 0:00. Today I searched for the lovely scene from "Amarcord" to find the Transatlantico Rex and to relive the beauty of a ship at night. Finding your video is a gift from above! Truly brought tears to my eyes.
The rex is far from being one of my favourite ships...aesthetically it was a copy of the bremen with an old-looking overhanging stern, while the interiors were copies of the white star old trio.
But it was the greatest ship ever launched by my country and all italians should be proud of her!

Bravo! The music could stand alone and be a great video. But coupled with the subject it's perfect.

A delightful looking ship. Somewhat unusual positioning of the funnels though.

Great she was a lovely ship. BUT she was quite traditional decorated compared with the Ile de France and the German twins Bremen and Europa.

I agree,Conte Di Savoia was somehow even more beautiful than the Rex.Such a well balanced, cohesive design.

Well done, a good choice of music.
