We all have things it's hard to forgive ourselves for...I saw a newspaper in an antique store in 1997, sealed in a plastic cover, from the day President Kennedy was assassinated--and didn't buy it. &%#$.
The thing about reading old newspapers is that each article needs the contemporaneous knowledge of the reader (the reason the reader chose to read that particular article).
.
Without this, as the today reader is, there is no context, and all newspaper stories start to be timeless; they are just standardly reported opinions of the journalists of the day then and now.
how it works confounds me. what a great line.

October 5, 1969. It was three days after my 12th birthday, I had started at a new school, and my sister was born exactly one year later (1970).
