The hullabaloo around Carly's record deal was a red herring to keep people from focusing on the fact that Cook had an album and that David Archuleta had been a finalist on the Star Search singing competition, neither of those facts were mentioned on the show.
Simon knew who the two Sony/BMG contracts would go to from the auditions forward. Just like when he used to mutter "I don't like this girl" about Kelly Clarkson, it is all part of an illusion making people think they created a star.
