Thank-you for this! I had noticed him in the Gilbert and Sullivan show scene but hadn't realised he was also in this earlier one from the Freshers' Fair. If you watch this a little further, former Essex and England cricketer (now journalist) Derek Pringle can be seen standing by the Athletics Club stall.
What part of "look to the left, look for the tall dude who stands up wearing a boater" didn't you people understand? There are two - count 'em, TWO - people wearing hats on the left of the screen. So it has to be the guy who stands up, ja? Plus, the other guy isn't wearing a boater hat anyway.
Nice, though I'd never know it was him. Did you find the closer shot LaDonna mentioned? I like it when other people do the work for me finding clips from films :)
There's a MUCH better view of him in another scene from this film. It's in the Gilbert & Sullivan show scene. He's standing right behind the main performers & a bit to the right of the screen, at the end of their song. Perfect , unmistakable shot of his face.
@LaDonna1961 I wasn't aware! I'll have to have another look - I knew he was around the Gilbert and Sullivan so I assumed it was just this bit (which also has G&S)

Light coloured striped suit, hat, holding a racket. Far left background, about 0:04 - 0:09.

I would like to have that costume in my wardrobe. Not because of the film/fry connection, but I just love that look.

Of course Fry just makes this shot, bringing to it whatever value it could have.
One of the truly great Extras of his time. A 'National Treasure' as you may have heard.
Though 'for what nation?', might be a fair question.

I guess even the greats have to start somewhere.
