I also have the original copy of MGS. Still works. My god. Metal gear never dies. But I couldn't load the game, so I have to buy it from the PS store. I'M NOT COMPLAINING! It's still by far my favorite MGS game of the whole series.

Metal Gear Solid is the main game. VR Missions is just levels to test you stealth skills.

If you have to choose between one or the other, geth Metal Gear Solid. Or, better yet, if you have a Gamecube, get MGS: Twin Snakes. It's the same game but with WAY better graphics.
