Favorite Album: Dear Catastrophe Waitress or The Life Pursuit not sure which I love the songs like Act of the Apostles from the Life Pursuit but Piazza is one of my favorite songs ever.
my favorite song off this album is I want the world to stop just for that catchy bass line :)
Review Cleric - Regressions! Just give it a chance! I bet you'll enjoy it! Just listen to the album in it's entirety once!! You [probably] won't regret it!!
Nice review, but comparing "The Ghost Of Rockschool" to the Velvet Underground converting to christianity will give people the wrong impression that they are indeed a christian band, which (as far as I know) they aren't. Still despite that, liked this a lot and I agree that that track did grow on me, so much as to become my favourite from the album!
@MrChipmunkMobian same! i love Dear Catastrophe Waitress and Life Pursuit albums the most, just because i happen to love nearly all tracks on them, and not just a few.
i do like their new record. although the only track that i fell in love with straight from the beginning was I Want the World Stop (which still is my favorite), there's other songs that are growing on me more and more: Come on Sister, I Didn't See it Coming, Ghost of Rockschool and of course, Little Lou.
their best album is still 'if you're feeling sinister', closely followed by 'tigermilk' and 'fold your hands child...', but i thought this was great. the best track for me is 'i can see your future' - sarah martin adding slowly to a canon of incredible songs (see 'waiting for the moon to rise' for details).
I'm a little cynical about your rating, it feels like you don't want to rate something high cause it's not unique enough. You had quite a positive review until you actually gave it a rating. In terms of what the music is like (in objective a way as possible), it's better than a LOT of stuff released this year and can easily make it into a lot of people's top 10s - depending on taste. I agree with a lot of the individual track comments - however, the title track is a grower, seriously man.
Been a B&S fan since 1997.I've had this album for about six weeks now and whilst enjoying it I reckon it's only a shadow of what they can really do.There are some good songs and one or two great songs (Ghost of Rockschool,Come on Sister) but I can't help feeling Stuart and co. can do better, indeed the cynic might say this album only appeared because it had been four years since the last one.Agree with above..a strong 5 out of 10.
Hmm, I'll have to check them out again. I thought the lyrics in Dear Catastrophe Waitress were so annoying and trying-to-be-clever that I didn't want to give them a chance, which is silly and picky but those lyrics REALLY bugged me! I'll give them another shot though :D
I thought "God Save the Girl" was a boring listen, but "Write About Love" is downright painful. It starts off with a great driving track with layers-upon-layers, but after that, it dies as quickly as it begins. I think "The Life Pursuit" is incredibly fun to listen to because they try hard to make a cohesive album while, at the same time, attempt to make a hell of a lot of individual tracks that stand out on their own. This album fails in both ways. Probably their least interesting album.
I think what you said about an entry point is right on...I had heard of them of course, but never got around to checking them out in any depth. The few songs I had heard were apparently unmemorable. But I liked this album. But then I like the "light and sweet" stuff anyway. Especially dug "I Want the World to Stop" and "Didn't See It Coming."
Half of the album feels like their continued evolution from "Life Pursuit" - polished, refined pop music that feels slightly more in tough with their classic sensibilities than most of the stuff on that previous record.
The other half feels, yeah, like good old haven't seen you in such a long time Belle and Sebastian. "Ghost of Rockschool" and "I Didn't See It Coming" are two standouts that, in my opinion, would have been right at home on "Arab Strap."
disagree that they've been ''spinning the same yarn'' for 10 years. this really sounds nothing like the first 2 albums, which are far and away their best. its also weird that you characterize them as religious and happy. ''i don't love anyone'', ''if you're feeling sinister'', ''like dylan in the movies'', really? murdoch's lyrics always been pretty dark, even if the melodies are light and fluffy.
I enjoyed this a little more than a 6. It feels like an alright combination of early B&S with the stuff from the last 2 albums. Little Lou.... is a nice track. As an early fan, I really like Calculating Bimbo. My 15 month old's favorite is I Didn't See it Coming.
As for the best album of their career, hands down it is Sinister.
God Help the Girl I think is a really charming, understated "girl-pop" band like an indie Martha and the Vandellas. Very listenable.
I've heard a few songs from them before, namely the 2 that were in Juno. Kind of are great for people who enjoy bright eyes or the weepies. ill use Dear Catastrophe Waitress ass a kick off point.
That's fair enough analysis and quite well said/described (I couldn't agree no more on the upbeat song!), except that I'd say lots of milk instead of cream - I could never put cream in my cup of coffee, that's sounds so vile. Anyway my immediate feeling after the first listening to the album was that I preferred the previous album; having said that the album may continue growing in me and I might change my opinion on this later on. p.s. hope your cold's gone by now!
I think it's classic Belle and Sebastien! The first album that I ever discovered from them was 'The Life Pursuit', and I've been listening to them for about 4 years now. 'Write About Love' is a good continuation of that album...they're like Camera Obscura :-)
I think you are a bit harsh with your review. I thought the album flows very nicely has some great tracks, personally I enjoyed almost every song. I'd give it a 7.5.
The later albums all have some great individual songs but as an album the best Belle and Sebastian album is '...Sinister'. This album pretty good. I certainly put it above 'God Help the Girl'. Fav. track overall would be 'Seymour Stein'. On this album, the first one.
"God Help the Girl" was one of my favourite Bell & Sebastian albums although i'd have to say my favourite would be either "The Life Pursuit" or "If You're Feeling Sinister".
Youre a tough reviewer. Do a review of Starfucker's single, Julius? Or when their new album comes out beginning of next year. I want to hear your thoughts!
Sorry to hear you're feeling ill. You should review How To Dress Well - Love Remains sometime. There isn't a review of it on youtube yet so you'd be first.
I think out of all he B&S I've heard "I fought in a War" was there best song, I wish they'd do more stuff like that. This album, as well as most of their stuff is a bit too upbeat for me.
B & S is a band where I love their music but listen in phases and with this release I was pretty hyped. With that considered I am pretty much in love with this right now and think it I would give it a strong 7 to light 8. PS- the band does have its niche music and lyrics however as a stand alone record its pretty darn good. IMO.
Why don't you answer your own questions, hmm? Since when did we become the internet's busiest music nerd, hmm? Just because you're sick doesn't mean you can shove all this work and opinion-forming on us you know.

Bend? Sorry, not sure what is wrong with me today... for some reason I was thinking of the Falls "Bend Sinister" and just decided it was a B&S album. haha
I think it is probably about time for this band to call it a day... unless they decide to go in a completely different direction on the next album. There is only so much you can do, when you write, basically the same album for years on end. They're a great band...made some great albums (bend, tiger, arab strap) but they need to mix it up a bit or just fuck off.
Although I like the twee-er side of indie rock for some reason I've never got into the B&S by the way I tried to comment on the other video and when I went to editmy comment it just wouldn't let me...
albums of the year to me so far are:
jonsi // mimicking birds // local natives // cloud cult // and the Isles - "outside beauty" which seems to have flown under everyone's radar... very few websites actually reviewed it! and I just loved it deeply.
cool review.. you haven't done a black metal deal in a while... how about reviewing Daniel Lioneye's Vol II, it's 'new' and pretty experimental, I'd think you'd dig it.
Life Pursuit is really quite good, but I have yet to check this out... You have to be in that special "Belle and Sebastian"-mood to stomach it, ifyouknowwutImean.
Good review but I think you should dial down the detail. Most people will get bored I think around 3 minutes. Perhaps try being a bit mroe dramatic at times as well, I think people always like dramatic opinions.
@reckonermk1 Fair point, but I think it's precisely the detail of his reviews that got Anthony past the 10k subscriber mark. @Libranmusic I think you are completely right. I'm subscribed now and he is very good at what he does. I still think sometimes that things could be said in an easier way and maybe cut the video length down. Mainly because when I haven't heard of a band that he's reviewing and I see the review is 5+ minutes I just sometimes can't be arsed to watch it which is a shame, cause as you say he is very good at reviewing.
