  • Did the mom scare anyone else when she shows up in the scribble when they were kids?

  • A container of bread, a stick of milk, and a loaf of butter. Got it!

  • look at the way she walks all groovn' You cant show that stuff any more

  • Xfyr

  • My friend was making a list of things he needed from the grocery store and all of the sudden this popped in my head. It must have been 23 years since I last saw this.

  • Why is it that when the mothers flace shows up its all multicolored like the little girl was frying on acid?

  • I haven't seen this in 30 years..apparently the repetition thing works

  • I love the name of the store!

  • @guitwizzz its just called store..lol

  • last time i saw this i was 6

  • i will NEVER forget this! thanks for this! :)

  • why hasn't anyone sampled this i wonder?

  • man this is some serious memory recall. we've probably been subliminally repeating loaf of bread, container of milk and stick of butter for 30 somethin years.

  • Ive never seen the cleveland show, i say this everytime my missus asks me to go to the shop

and she typically goes wtf?!? so I looked it up on YT to show her

  • 5 people didn't remember

  • I remember that well. I loved the little segment. I was probably about the little girls age when it came out. But I was sent to the store for some ground beef, I was told ro buy a pound and a half, I came home with a half pound.

  • That little girl has the cutest darn voice! She must be in her 40's by now.

  • @Hookedoncollies

that little girl has been on one or two previous versions. she did say she had a good time recording this.

  • she slam that door real hard tho.

  • I love that this mom is sending her young child to the store all by herself...those were the days...wouldn't happen now. I remember! I remember!

  • @CampbellScot Yep. I remember that. My Grandfather would send me a couple blocks away, across the train tracks to the general store to get him a pack of lucky strikes. Never a second thought.

  • @madwilliamflint My Mom sent me to the store for cigarettes too. I'd tell the man "There not for me, they're for my Mom." I would say that everytime.

  • @Sheri451 Like, didn't we all back in the day...

  • @62dorell0709 Yes we did.

  • @Sheri451 The innocence I don't see happening much anymore.

  • @RetroToledo No there is no innocence anymore. Even though you try to keep children from seeing inappropriate things on TV or hear bad language.

  • @Sheri451 Sad really. I'm often reminded of the times I went to the store for things my late mother needed all the time.

  • @RetroToledo I used to get sent to the store all the time too. for cigarettes especially. But my Mom and Dad quit smoking 25 years ago. He had two heart attacks and she's got COPD.

  • Comment removed

  • @Sheri451 It's funny the things you never think about at that age that could have repercussions later on.

  • @RetroToledo That's true. And I've had asthma ever since I was born.I never tried to smoke. I'm glad too. I'd probably be dead by now if I had.

  • this is embedded in my brain!!! :D but i thought it was "a loaf of bread, some potatoes and milk, and a stick of butter." and i always use that line, "i remember, i remember." didn't realize it was from the same skit. i loved sesame street!

  • @atworkabby so what you're saying is you forgot.

  • @dvsjr i didn't forget. i misplaced the memory. :p

  • @dvsjr i didn't forget. i misplaced the memory. :p

  • @dvsjr

More like, added an extra thing, the potato!

  • @atworkabby I also thought it was "a potato and milk", but it was "a container of milk".

  • i really liked this one iused to imitate this one when i was a kid

  • You don't hear too many cool ditties, that are only drums, and a flute!

  • Do they still show this? I wonder if, in this day and age, they would show a kid going to the store by herself.

  • at 45 this is still how I remember things when I go to the store :D

  • Una barra de pan, una botella de leche, y una barra de mantequilla.

  • I used to think it was "Loaf of bread, a potato and milk, and a stick of butter."

  • when was this on the cleveland show?

  • i live un the uk, and even now, me and the wife say this when someone says there going to the shops....in american accents, loved the 70's sesame st, is it still on in the us? im surprised i didnt learn more spanish mind....

  • @broke51 Hahahahahaha, i live in Ireland, i'm now 40 and i STILL do it with my brother and sister!!!!!!

  • @broke51 yep, it's still on. Though, the government (or crazy republicans) want to take away federal funding for PBS (our Public Broadcasting Service) :( That would mean no Sesame Street or Masterpiece Theater!

  • Whats a stickabuttah?

  • The one thing I learned from this clip was to always remember what Mama says or else....lol

  • My God, do i remember this! To this day, my family will say this to each other for a laugh. Funny how some things will stick in your mind some 35 + years later. "A loaf of bread, a container of milk and a stick of butter". A classic!

  • For the last 20 years i thought she said a potato of milk !

  • @sharms888 omgosh...me too!!

  • @memyself8 haha yeah for 20 years i've been telling everyone i've got a "potato" of milk, nobody knew what the hell i was talking about !

  • @sharms888 HAHAHA!!! Now that's funny! LOL!!!!

  • Yeah. I saw the one on the other video was not the original. This is the one I remember.

  • i forgot the mother had a doo-rag on her head. Hilarious!

  • Classic!

I bust out laughing when I saw it on the Cleveland show but loved the original, it's a shame it's not as good as it used to be.

  • My husband and I say this to eachother all the time.lol.Thank you for putting it up.LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!

  • I can't remember how many times I have found myself saying this over the years ;)

  • tried to explain it to my husband when it was on the cleveland show...just emailed it to him...still cant believe he didnt watch the street!!!

  • When I saw this on the Cleveland Show I about crapped my pants!

  • @RETNAVY13 i know huh i almost did the same thing when i heared it on the cleveland show!!!

  • @RETNAVY13 That okay bro.. It's the usual reaction to watching the Cleveland Show..

  • This is racist because it shows black people.

  • @compartmentJ2 Grow up dont you have anything better to do

  • @colorless5 , biggot!

  • @compartmentJ2 Really is that why my husband is black; my adopted child has down syndrome and my nieces and nephews are half hispanic? Wow youre funny idiots like you are a riot.

  • @colorless5 , Who has nothing better to do? I can't believe you even felt the need to defend yourself in this case. God, you're easy!

Let's see. You've spent at least as much time as I have making comments on this video. You fall easily for any bait thrown your way; and you are so insecure about your racism, that you married into a family of coloreds.

Now, try to say something about how dumb you think I am. Oh no. That's exactly what comment-page-trolls try to do... for future reference.

  • @compartmentJ2

Well they happen to be very smart black people.

  • @compartmentJ2

That is getting a bit picky. Anyway, the little girl was a very smart black peson.

  • I have often thought of this clip and was delighted when hearing Cleveland Jr. repeat it on the show. lol good times...

  • How obscure!

I, too, thought I was one of the few kids from the 70's and 80's that remembered (ha!) this short.

    Bravo Seth, great throwback!

  • That's weird. I remember the child being a boy. Was there another version of this?

  • @weeWinky I think there was.. I remember one were a boy, I think, got confused because as he walked to the store things like a shiny fire truck passed him and he thought that was one of the things that he had to buy when he got to the store.

  • WAIT- I KNOW NOTICED HOW SHABBY SESAME STREET MADE THESE CHARACTERS LOOK! dang :(... not nice at allllll

  • Seriously - I am STUNNED how many people remembered this. I love The Cleveland Show and Family Guy because of the obscure references - but this has to be one of the most obscure.

We ALL have good memories, honey.

  • Memories! I had to do the EXACT same thing to remember our grocery lists lol! To make it easier, I'd make a song of it! Good times!

  • thumbs up if you're here because of the cleveland show

  • @tjackson76 This was on the cleveland show? Which episode?

  • @Quamlen i can't remember now... that was 3 months ago

  • @tjackson76 never heard of the cleveland show... watched the original and going to taco bell the other day was trying to remember taco salad, beef buritto and as i repeated it a few times... loaf of bread container of milk and stick of butter came out.... so when me (45) and my cousin(17) got to taco bell he wanted to know if we needed to order stick of butter in drive thru at Taco bell LOL

  • @brighteyz66 the cleveland show is a spinoff of the family guy... i totally forgot about this clip but the cleveland show made me remember it

  • mmmmmmmm a stick-a-budda

  • Ohhhh terry terry terry

  • the cleveland show

  • "The Cleveland Show" brought this flashback to me

  • Comment removed

  • this is classic sesame street and the way i wish it still was! the past ten years has made it so politically correct what with the sexuality of bert and ernie and cookie monster having to eat a piece of fruit before he eats cookies....seriously?! society has totally ruined it! sesame street was perfect the way it was!!

  • omg..im 31 and ive known this forever..i love that everyone else is ocd w this like i am..my family!!! my loaf of bread family!

  • @flightfa I'm 32 and I remember this! It's a running joke in my family, every time we have to get something from the store, to say, "A loaf of bread, a container of milk, and a stick of butter!" This is such a cute cartoon!

  • I think the true test of memory is to remember this short all these years later, which many of us have!

  • lmao I'm 35 and I say this when going to the store all the time too!

  • How did she forget the butter? She said it like 50 times on the way there! lol.

  • @drknlvly6781

she just needed to remember the first bit of the list, it's like remembering the times tables back in the dear dead days

  • What kind of cheap ghetto ass neighborhood sells butter in individual sticks?

  • Cartoons trip me out. This one does as well.

  • my mom showed me this and its so like learning for little kids......i guess

  • I just went to the grocery store and bought..... A loaf of bread, a container of milk and a tub of margarine....Is that close enough? LOL

  • didn't the scenery get all trippy and distracting maybe even scary on her way there or way back? Maybe that was another skit.

  • @michaelbuddy thats the skit where the lil boy tries to find his way back home

  • This is probably the only thing I remember from Sesame Street. Awww memories :)

  • This is so memorable - I don't know why, but I've never forgotten this clip in the last few decades. Anyone know what year it first aired?

  • "Ah...ah...ah...Ah can't remember!"

  • I remember that one!

  • I simply remebered this simply by the way she says Buttah the only thing i remeber was a and a stick of buttah mommy moomy i guess i don't have such a good memory

  • @hawthorners: odd you would think that, because it's been "container" for all 30-odd years...i have that whole cadence ("a loafa bread, a c'taina o'milk, and a sticka butta") etched into my brain like a tattoo (and, really, come on, why would some independent animator/short-filmmaker who contributed to sesame street in 1970-whatever been compelled for any reason to recut a voice track to change one word pointlessly?)...no, it's def. always been "container."

  • I can't believe there's somebody that wouldn't like this video. It's the cutest thing, and it took me back to my childhood.

  • the thing i remember from sesame street the most. dont get me started on schoolhouse rock!! : )

  • I say this all the time!!!!

  • Everytime I go to the store or make a list, I think of this! Great post!

  • MY 4 YEAR OLD IS TRYING TO IMITATE HER WALKING....TOOOO FUNNY!!!!!

HE KNOWS THE WHOLE SKIT BY HEART ONLY AFTER WATCHING IT TWO TIMES!!!!

  • @avon2983

Can you put up a video of him doing said walk? That would be so worth the seeing :)

  • I always used to think it was A POTATO AND MILK too! :)

  • I loved this and still do, im 36. She is so adorable. What a classic. I wish there could be more cartoons like this on and everyone was not so uptight to have an african american like this play the staring role.

  • LOVED this one as a kid. I still sometimes think of this when going to the store/making a list for the store. lol.

  • Those were the good old days. I usually use this too if I'm stuck and say it repeatedly. It works everytime.

  • I am 39 and still say this when I'm trying to remember something. Wow. I didn't know it was from Sesame St. That little girl is too cute and has such an innocent, cute voice.

  • I love the music that plays in this skit..when i was little , the flashback of the mom was kind of creepy...

  • Ol' Skool....i haven't seen this since i was like 4. Looking back, i'm surprised oh-girl didn't get jacked for her loot! lol

  • Does anyone else remember this as "a gallon of milk"? Did they change it? Something stinks here...

  • @drboogersnot nope, it's always been a container of milk. always, always. :-)

  • @drboogersnot I've been reciting it as a gallon of milk all these years. That's not to say we're right, but that's what I've been saying.

  • @nonshalant : I've been saying a gallon of milk for more than 30 years, too. Wonder if it was changed?

  • Comment removed

  • cant believe i think of these things after 25 years and google it and its out there..i always thought it was potato of milk too, thats actually what i typed into google to get here, but its "A CONTAINER OF MILK"!!!!

  • @JiggyJax420: For some odd reason, I always misheard the second item as "a potato of milk" too. Maybe because it seemed weirder that Mom would ask for a generic "container"...not a carton/bottle/jug of milk, and not a specific size.

  • childhood was good...

  • she sounds like she is saying a loaf of bead a potato milk and a stick of butta LOL im crying im laughing so hard

  • Johnny Bravo said this and I was the only one who got it...I still say it at the store.

  • lol

  • Oh my god this is one of my all time favorites... the animation is even more beautiful than I remember

  • I was surprised to find with all the other things I forgot, I could still remember this. I had to look this up just to see it. I am over 40 and will probably always keep this in my mind somewhere.

  • A bag of weed,a bottle of booze and a rock of crack!!!!!

  • @hatinglife66 LOL!!!

  • I am 38 years old and my wife and I still quote this from when we were kids... classic!!!

  • alofabret abpatainamelk ennasticka butta

  • for all those who remember watching this as a kid, those three things should be our passwords for everything because it seems like it's the only thing i can recall with no problem, but my ebay password???? what was it again?

  • @beatles64c

Maybe you should make "loafa bread" the password? ;-)

  • for all those who remember watching this as a kid, those three things should be our passwords for everything because it seems like it's the only thing i can recall with no problem, but my ebay password???? what was it again?

  • My wife says the EXACT same thing when she sends me shopping, "If you can't remember, I'll write it down for you."

  • Great! Brings back good memories.

  • When i was younger, I always heard: a loaf of bread, a "potato" milk and a stick of butter. Now that I am older, i finally hear "container" of milk.

  • Man, how many people would send their kids to the corner store these days. :(

  • brand new seseme street sucks. the old ones rock!

  • OMG, I loved this growing up

  • I love this one! Back from when I was a kid.

  • Love the trippy flashback the little girl has towards the end! Even the kids were on acid back then! haha At least they had good memories! Classic!

  • THIS WAS DA SHIT!!! Lmmfao

  • I love this skit. My mom and I recite it even today, and I've just turned 30. What a classic! Maybe I can get my one-year-old son in on the memory

  • 0:56 always gave me the creeps seeing the disembodied head floating around.

  • hahaha love this subliminal brain programming lol. NO-ONE of a certain age will EVER forget this shopping list.

I love popping this into the conversation sometimes when I'm with people of a certain age and they ALL get this strange look on their face and say....whaaaaat is that from....I KNOW that shopping list......... hahahaha

  • I am 40 and I still say this going to the store!

  • What was the one where guys were stepping out of mid air and saying, "go back the other way!"

  • Great find. This is memories.

    What's sticker butter? Hehe

  • She seems just sooo excited there at the end. lol "I did it. I remembered..I remembered."

  • WOW...I remembered this today...I did, however say, A loaf of bread, a gallon of milk, and a stick of butter...lol

  • I am absolutely loving the fact that the CAKE BOSS put this grocery list on the cake he made for the 40th anniversary of Sesame Street! I had to pause and rewind cause I couldn't believe my eyes last night...the entire shopping list was on a sandwich board outside of Hoopers Store...love Cake Boss and Buddy!! This skit is a classic...

  • That's what brought me here too! I saw that sign and it was like someone activated the secret CIA programming in my head! Weird how that can be there after all these years.

  • hasta todavía practico esto para recordar jajajaja :D

  • To this day, I can STILL remember that shopping list. Isn't that sad? I am 33 now...

  • @NellsStuff: I'm 44 and I still remember it too. I like to repeat it to myself while walking into the grocery store. It's not sad, it's a happy childhood memory! :D

  • You're not the only one. We all remember that damn shopping list.

  • what year was this???

  • Hahaha, I used to say a "potato of milk" as a kid, too.

  • The animation is very reminiscent of "Hey Diddle Diddle" (Electric Co.). When I was a kid I used to skip to school sort of like the girl here.

  • a sticka butta!! I love this, so cute!!

  • I just told my husband that I could lose all of my other memories and still know what this kid was supposed to get for her mom at the store. Heh. "A loaf of bread, a container of milk, and a stick of buttah." Yay classic Sesame Street!

  • I remember this from all those years ago!!!

  • if she can't remember then she should pull out her blackberry and call her mom

  • Hey, that's cheating! Besides, the little girl prides herself on remembering. The mother offered to write it down in the beginning, and the little girl insists she can remember it without the list. And she did!

  • Kids these days would never be sent to the store alone, anyway.

  • see this was back in the day when you could send your kids to the store without worrying about them getting snatched...im 40 and i remember going to store a lot for my mom...lol...and i used to say this phrase in my head to help me remember...now if only it worked for my car keys!!!! lol...

  • 1970s racial stereotypes? Jive turkey fool. Where's my stikka buttah?

  • this has always been 1 of my favorites, thanks for posting !!!!

  • OMG this is another one that FREAKED me out lol
