Sick vid man. I just got interested in this game bout a week ago. Just sold my wow account and going to start playing this. Gotta say, this is one of the hardest games to find lol. Can't find it no where, except the collectors edition, but that is $70 bucks. :/
@arconegro I haven't played in a while but you can run it on those specs, just you won't be able to turn it up to extreme. More ram would be helpful for a quick boost.
Oh yeh, thing I forgot to mention about making the volumertric shadows look good with lighting resolution turned to 630 is that you need to have Anti aliasing enabled though catalyst/ntune/nhancer and you need to find your eq2.ini and add the line r_aa_blit 1
I play EQ2, and i have played most of the modern mmorpgs and i always come back to eq2, its a big difference from WoW, you may not like it, but its worth a try....download the trial and see for yourself
If you give eq2 a try check out the Crushbone server. Also keep in mind a new expansion is coming out in February so attendance will probably start to rise in the next few weeks.
i always thought that some of the soga models looks weird esp dwarves, halfings and gnomes lol but anyway, i thought the shader 3.0 isnt implemented in eq2 yet?
If you get an equivelent speep core 2 duo to a core 2 quad it will run allot faster in this game because eq2 hardly uses the second core anyway and there is plenty of room for backround processes which takeup about 1000x less cpu activity than eq2. For example, my pc shows no cpu activity attal on the desktop. You obviously used a slow dual core if you got slower fps. Also if your on a pvp server, fair enough your going to use gpu shadows because they preform better but they still look worse.
Btw you said get a quad core. If your mainly going to be playing eq2 your much better off with a dual as it only uses 1 core with the exeption of a very small amount of animations being designated to a second core. Also another advantage with the cpu shadows over the gpu ones as it stands is that they are cast by parts of the object, like the nose on a player's face or the rectangular edges on boxes wheras the gpu ones only work on the object as a whole.
This is a topic I've pondered a bit about. While it may be true EQ2 will not use all 4 cores, you still have to consider what your overall operating system and background tasks may demand. So, if there are 8 activities going on at a time on your pc then maybe the core playing EQ2 only needs to share with one other while the other cores also share 2 tasks. But if it were a Core 2 Duo then the core playing EQ2 would have to split between 4 tasks which gives less for the game.
I experienced EQ2 with a dual core and a quad core. The game is way faster with a quad. And btw on a PVP server you need the maximum frames per second. A PVP server lags a lot more then PVE to be honest. I started at launch and switched to PVP server. PVE is boring...
Nope, I started playing around the time the first expansion came out so it was agood year or so before the pvp servers came out, I'm on splitpaw. Btw did you try like I said with cpu shadows on with the lighting resolution down? It realy does look awesome. Close to the best shadows I've seen in a game other than they don't work on trees but thats the only dissadvantage.
they only dident flicker because on the video because there were only very closeup and they werent very dense. The Only reason I could see for not useing cpu shadows is if they lag you out allot which on your system I wouldent think they would as its only slightly slower than mine. But if your realy think they look better then its your loss tbh :P
from the patch notes for the test server version they say they are delaying it till the next patch (december) as it has turned out to be more difficult than they first expected. And the shadows we have at the moment are very ugly, when you move they flicker, when you look at anything inside them theres no bump mapping on them and they only look decent in about a meter radius around you. Try like I said to use cpu shadows while lowering your lighting resolution down to about 630 looks photo real
They still look better in my opinion cause like you said you can finaly have true outdoor realistic shadows although it's only from the sun it's still pretty cool. I heard it was ready and coming for september... so..I don't know where you got that info, maybe you could tell us! :)
Not realy, as is, they turn off bump mapping on anything inside them, are quite jaggy and low res, have a short range and arent effected by any lightsource other than the sun. The only benefit over the cpu ones is they have better preformance and can do more complex shapes likes leaves on trees. Btw they are delaying the shader model 3.0 update to december :(. Tip: enable cpu shadows and lower the lighting resolution to about 630 ish, makes the shadows look realy good
Thanks for the info. What screen resolution are you playing at when you made this recording? I used to use fraps for eq2 but when I got a larger screen and increased my resolution to 1900x1080 my recordings became very choppy. I can still play but not record at same time. I need a faster cpu for sure, its an E4600 2.4. I'm thinking of upgrading to an E8600 and overclock to 4.0 at least.
1920x1080 play and record at that resolution. Youtube is 720p so you can always record at that resolution. Get a quad-core... don't get an another dual that would be worthless.
i am thinking about purchasing this game. if i were to buy an expansion would i need to get them in order like WOW? anyone help me. thanks.

Hi all.
Can run EQ2 under a Home Vista-64 bits, 2,5 MHz, Nvidia Gforce 8600M GS and 2 Gb Ram?
Thanks!

@arconegro 2.5Ghz you mean.. sure..
Why do you have 64bit installed if you only have 2 gigs of ram?

I'd say it's worth it. You'll just have to make friends in EQ2 just like you did in WoW. The guild finder feature makes it painless to find a guild.

the old cpu shadows look far better than the gpu ones at the moment, hopefully with the full shader model 3.0 update that will change though

Yes they probably will. They only look ugly from far tho
modepc 2 years ago
nice vid and smooth play. What cpu and clock speed are you using? also what kind of graphics card.
zonker61 2 years ago
Intel Q6600 2.4 @ 3.2ghz
8 Gigs of DDR2
ATi 4870x2 2gig ddr5
But in this game, the most important thing is CPU. Faster the your CPU is the better this game will run!
