A good beginning collection. Most of the individual coins are valued between $20 and $100. A nice collection can be put together in this price range. One major caution...deal ONLY with a reputable and certified dealer. Many fakes exist!
Hey moray, I have a coin from 193-211 AD and it is a Septimius Severus coin. I also have an Augustus Caesar coin from 14-37 AD. I just recieved a coin covered with dirt, and it HAS to be B.C!
Hello. Are you very good at identification? I have a coin that looks very similar in style to some of the coins in this video. The back of the coin is similar to the 'Trajan' back with less writing. If I were to e-mail you a pic, would you give me your opinion? the front looks Roman, but not positive.
If not, do you recommend any particular reference for this?
I need help identifying a coin. On the reverse side, it has a man that is about to stab another man on the ground with his spear. It says "SISA" at the bottom.
Hi. Your coin sounds to me like a FEL TEMP REPETIO minted during the later part of the empire. If the bust has a diadem, it will be Constantius II (or very rarely, Constans). If the bust is bare headed, it will be Constantius Gallus or Jullian II.
@cldball Thanks, the Claudius was won on Ebay for 3 dollars. It cost more for the shipping. This coin was really encrusted. I decided to use electrolysis to soften it up and then mechanically cleaned it under a stereo microscope.
Thanks to you I found out what kind of coin mine was that I bought off Ebay. Aurelian 270-275 AD. I was hoping it would have been a coin that was in Jesus' time, but oh well.
@classicrockrockz Not the same but same time frame. If you want a Roman coin from the time frame of Jesus then Augustus is where it is at! Ebay Augustus denarius, dupondius, as and sestertius and you will find something!

I like roman coins my dream is to one day have the most famous ever the eid mar silver denarius of marcus brutus made to celebrate the killing of caesar its very rare in top grade it can cost over $200.000
Best is NOT to clean them unless the coins have been dug up freshly from the soil with earthen deposits all over them. By cleaning you take off the patina that gives older coins a certain appeal which is much appreciated by collectors. This applies especially to ancient coins but also for coins of more recent dates patination is certainly an issue. A brightly polished coin is not very attractive for most collectors.
@fatterheadder DrBPhdD is correct, however, there are ways to to remove the hardend earth without doing damage to the patina. This should only be done if you can not see the detail through the crust. NEVER remove patina in an attempt to uncover more detail. This is a mistake that I have made early on. You will ruin the coin there is NO MORE detail under the patina. Soak the coin in olive oil for 2 weeks and use a soft bristled tooth brush to remove soil. Repeat process until desired results
I have project (research paper) about roman conins during the time of Ceasar but i cannot find any interesting information. Since you guys knows more about this things can you recommend me something (website for ex. )
i have the same problem.i did find a lot of info if you google pictures then follow the links below.if you get good ideas on how to clean them, please let me now.
Friend, you might communicate with one of the leading firms of ancient numismatics, "Classical Numismatics Group" or "CNG".Then there is "Roman Republican Coinage" by M CRAWFORD.
I also have one with a bloke with a beard. Were there any others with beards? If only one emperor I think I have got the Marcus Aueralius one.. I can't spell his surname yet.
What a wonderful collection. I have a collection my dad dug up and just put it on Youtube. I am just looking at your coins to see which Emperor I have.
Nice collection I should post a video of some of mine someday. I noticed you didn't show any of my namesake Antoninus Severus aka Caracalla. I have over 100 of him alone never mind the ones for Septimius, Julia Domna, and poor old Geta.
BTW I agree with moonlightflyer that Aurelius Sestertius is fantastic! I have several of his but none of them as as good as yours. Your very lucky.

What did you use to clean your roman coin?
White1Hunter 1 year ago
Lovely coins. I am really envious.
Just one point - about one of my pet hates.
In your titles, the 'AD' should always come BEFORE the date, not after.
AD is an abbreviation for Anno Domini, which means 'In the year of the Lord'.
So, if you think of it out loud, you would say 'In the year of the Lord 246' (AD 246), and not '246 in the year of the Lord' (246 AD).
(BC means 'Before Christ' (before the birth of Jesus Christ), and so properly comes AFTER the date.)
