Marvelous. Bring back the Jet Train on the Bombardier's Transportation catalog and finally to the production for the Canadian American railroad market.
@Train2590 No-the JetTrain is a turbine-powered version. If it is introduced into service it will have cars identical to the Acela. Note the train can only travel 110MPH because that's the safe limit for the Horizon cars.
"as of today, we are unaware of its present location and status. Anyone with any information contact us."
As of September of 2010, it was at the Pueblo test track tucked away inside a building, protected from the elements. OOPS! Now that I've revealed this tidbit of information, does that mean it will soon be scrapped, similar to what GM did with its electric car a few years ago?
"Rotting in a field near Pueblo for years?" Nonsense. Utter nonsense. The power unit is reliably reported to be stored serviceable at the FRA test facility. It is said to be immensely fuel efficient, powerful and quiet with the capability to match all-electric Acela's performance profile as track and signal quality allows. In any case, good show, Bombardier and FRA. Some of us continue to look for applications. The nation needs this technology.
@408knw The only pictures I have, besides the press kits and travelling demos, is with the locomotive sitting in a field. I welcome more information and updated pictures if you have them.
It was just a locomotive. This train is a little more modern than the older turbine-powered trains. This one uses the turbine to generate electricity to the traction motors at high speed and a smaller diesel engine for low speed and hotel power. The older ones drove the wheels through a transmission. Both kinds are horribly inefficient with fuel. The prototype had been rotting in a field in Pueblo for years.
@kjrehberg You are probably thinking of the old turbo, which was sucked up a bunch of fuel. This jet train is more aerodynamic, lighter in weight, saves fuel when running, and can reach speeds of 170 mph. And that's just on the 1st set of gears. If they changed the gears to gear 2, then this engine could do 220 mph. Same with the Acela. Up the voltage on the electrified lines, the those thing could also be doing 220 mph easy. Trains of today are MUCH more fuel efficient than the trains of 1970.
@trinityct - JetTrain design as it stands is only good for 165-170mph max, and that's with two power cars, hauling a full set of 10 or 11 coaches. There would be no sense in really going above that anyway, as it's intended for use on existing North American track where in service speeds would be capped at 150mph, and in most cases in practice even that would be optimistic due to tight turns, obsolete signalling, slow freight traffic etc.
@LoveMeLoveMyDog80 Yeah, that's the FRA's rule. No trains going faster than 150 mph on the same mainline as slower trains. otherwise you need a separate corridor just for these High speed trains. And that isn't likely to happen because a new route would be so expensive to build. Along with signals and the whole deal. :P
They were known as the 'Turbine Trains' Read a artcle in a Australian magzine outlining all of the detail of the jet turbine and all tof the conversions to this and that.
"...if introduced now in the President Obama era would probably have been successful."
The only thing introducing it under Obama would've meant is that it would've been approved, as he and his minions know no limits when it comes to spend & tax. Successful? Not necessarily. In fact, it doesn't even have to be projected to succeed beforehand in order to get passed by the Democrats. They don't even read the bills they sign into law.
It can't go it's full speed unless Canada upgraded to Shinkansen style fully reinforced alloy trackage.

If you hook that up with some Acela-chic cars, it could be used in Chicago.

@USofMilitaryPower94 If we "deperately need" some high-speed service, private enterprise would have stepped up and provided it, right?

@trinityct Acela can go 200 MPH right now. It's not a function of the voltage. It's a function of current, and there is plenty of that.
kjrehberg 1 year ago
@kjrehberg Ah, okay. I guess that Amtrak would have to get a waiver for the Acela to do 200 instead of 150.
