@akaskyscraper Dont hate...the lord just expressing his melaninated ability on the mic, cause most such as myself didnt know he had the skills, and he just simply gave a display of his gifts!!! Let me know homw many sax specialists are seeing this brother on the MICROPHONE!!! Mike keep doing YOU my comrade----1
no he's not. and i don't think he can. check out davis binney, or steve wilson, or greg osby, or antonio hart. he's pretty much an r&b saxophonist and there's nothing wrong with that unless people think he's playing jazz.
love Mike's playing, HATE his rapping, total waste of time, I saw him with Prince in Kansas City, (the musicology tour) His performance of GOD was amazing, if anyone has that please post it, or better yet message me so i can get it from u,
I don't know man. I think Philly is as "smooth" as any other smooth jazz player, with all of his circular breathing and upper octave ostinatos. Can't say he would fit in playing next to guys like Nick Payton or even Chris Potter, to name a few...
See, now I would disagree with you on that. He can do a lot of stuff that Kenny G and the other smooth cats can't do. And sure he may not fit in with Chris Potter and those cats, he could probably do the stuff that they do.
LOL. I won't say he sounds "just like" Kenny G, but he sure didn't have to put Kenny down like that. Like him or not, he's just as talented as Mike. This is one genre of music where we don't have to endure artists "battling" who's the best and who can sell more albums. Mike needs to just do what he does best and stop trying to be a smart ass. Still love his music though!
magic rain.. your an anus, get off your jazz pedestal and realise that mike phillips is inasne.. how can you compare kenny garrett and mike phillips when they are completly different kind of players, why not appreciate them both for being incredible players instead of being a narrow minded rim whole..
*sigh* It's people like you that make me wonder. You don't know or understand my view on this. I said "I clicked on this vid expecting jazz" and yet you go and knock my opinion? Can you--for once, maybe--respect other people's opinions? I never said this guy was bad! He's a good horn player, but not "insane." In order to reach that level you have to do some things that are above average... There are tons of people that can play sax like that. His voicebox stuff is killin though.
But I just want to let you know that I'm not gonna kiss your ass just to gain your respect and acknowledgement. I can respect your view if you provide some reason to it, as you did. Garrett and Phillips are different players, but if you read my message correctly, I was making a response to the argument that was going on, in THEIR scenario. "Rim-Whole"? Really? It's "rim-HOLE," also, but still, who said I didn't appreciate them? I can appreciate them and not like one, man.
I clicked on this vid expecting jazz... now all I hear is the same contemporary stuff I hear at school all the time... *sigh* How can you tribute to Michael Brecker with this stuff? Too misleading, man. And to the people who commented on Kenny G and this guy... Kenny Garrett would definitely play circles around both at the same time... I don't know about Kenny G, though. He actually can play stuff other than adult contemporary. The song is Sugar, by the way...
Kenny G. Crap??? It hard to belive you said those ungrateful words.......dude ....WoW....If Kenny G. would have called this guy early in his career he would gone crawling on his Knees. I have seen Kenny cut loose on a tenor and alto and he is nice...So do get to high "Philly Mike"...Ya game is GOOD but Kenny will make you his BITCH....4 real.....and O Yeah....Kenny pays better!!!!
who cares who's better...does it matter? just listen to the music, if you dont like it, don't listen again. mike philly is a top player and he must have a certain amount of respect to get on tours with prince and stevie wonder. it really doesn't matter who's better or worse, it's just music!!!!
I agree, Mike does play with influences from Parker, Becker, Adderly, and even some of Miles Davis sounds. But what I was referring to is Mikes' Signature, it is smooth. His sounds does consist of the Hip Hop, Soul, R&B, and of course Jazz, and to me, he transistions so smoothly from 1 style to another while seamlessly keeping the Jazz Vibe, as u so eloquiently put it; To me his music is SMOOTH, REAL, SWEET, FORCEFUL, BEAUTIFUL, & oh so SOULFUL!!!! Jah Bless U me Brotha PEACE & MUCH LOVE!!
id have him play in my jazz quintet anyday.... id like to hear him with some legit jazz artists, like christian mcbride, nicholas payton, anthony wonsey... thatd be sweet, right?

Its a shame the sax isn't higher in the mix. Bad mixing puts me off! Still, he's an amazing saxophonist.

The idea of a tribute isn't to cover the song, its to pay tribute to the musician in your own style or way.

You're right my friend... Music is not a race of winners and losers, is just feelings, a way of comunication.
It doesn't matter who's playing, just listen and let yourself go.
Music is life.
