this technique is quite easy to understand and work with however the person in the vid should have also further explained what is done with the degree reading to actually determine the latitude at different times of the year.
I'm assuming that altitude is equivalent to height. In that case: how can you tell the altitude this way? Anything between the end of the straw and the object whose altitude one is trying to measure will also have that read out. So, this alone cannot tell altitude unless altitude is not height above something. I'm confused.
Trigonometry. Google it.. or finish Grade 9. As far as stuff from after grade-school goes, it's about the only mathematics from school that you might actually use in life. Who the hell needs to know the imaginary roots of a parabola?
By "altitude", I believe you rightfully mean "altitude angle" or "angle of altitude" since your not actually measuring any height or altitude like in a triangle.
I always thought the main definition of altitude was a distance and not an angle. But I understand they commonly use altitude and assume you know it's an angle up in the sky that means "how high or steep (of an angle)."

@pablo4115 "altitude" as used in this context is a measurement of degrees above the horizon. I hope that helps clear up the confusion.

Im fairly sure that why he mention for it to be over a certain number of days.
You'de get enough info for the calculation.
OO just be creative, take slight measurement from large distances at the same time day to day. YES YES?
