little did they know the guy was roided out. LOL. I remember he hit 2 home runs that bounced off the left field pavilion roof and onto the parking lot at Dodgers Stadium in the same game. This guy's my favorite player and i wanted to be at that game but back then I was an unlicensed teen so i had to settle with watching him on T.V.
I seen Mark hit at batting practice in the old Anaheim Stadium and put a shot in the up deck in left field. You got to be strong to hit one up there. Mark was always a strong hitter. Even way back when he played at USC.
Mac might have gained an edge with steroids, but there were many, many factors in place during that era.
Smaller ball parks, league expansion, better bats, a possibly "juiced baseball", and the acceptance of weight training in a sport that often frowned on lifting in decades before.
Most of Mac's hr's in 98 were not cheap shots that barely cleared the wall.
With all of those factors in place he may well have hit 62+ without any chemical help anyway.
i honestly don't give a rats ass about him taking roids, still doesn't take away from the fact that he's one of the greatest of all time.... On a funny note, anyone who likes stand up should check this out, jim breuer does a really funny bit on Mark McGwire. type in "Jim Bruer heavy metal comedy part 1" (name is spelled wrong but it leads to the right one) and skip to about 8 minutes in. Freaking hilarious!!!
You know alot of people get onto McGwire for doing roids and that being the only reason he was able to hit home runs as often as he did. But what they forget was that in his rookie season before the "roids" era in 1987 he hit 49 home runs and set a record for most home runs by a rookie.
It's talent, not steroids. MLB and the media forget that not everyone who takes steroids makes it to the Big Leagues. It's baseball that it is their blood, not steroids.
In the stadium, he was hitting it into the Loge level which is the level beneath the upper upper deck. I remember I think it was the last series in 98 where Sosa got a hold of one and hit it up there in Left Center
The Thing is people complain about him taking roids. At the time he was and Sosa it was not illegal. I mean people were allowed to juice up and did not receive a punishment simply because it wasn't banned.
I saw Johnny Perry, late Strongest Man competitor, hit softballs in homerun contest. He had no swing whatsoever, but when he connected he hit mammoth homeruns. Increased strength means increased homerun power. Steroids makes you stronger and quicker which is even more important to a swing. Roids makes a HUGE difference in batting prowess. If not, why are the numbers way down now. It's not opinion, it's fact.

You people are retarded this guy had one if the best swings of all time. Steroids don't help you hit a ball farther. I've never seen anyone hit those homeruns in the astro dome like tha besides my dad eric Anthony longest homerun In the dome
@ejhoustonheat23 This guy said steroids dont make you hit the ball farther hahahahahahahahahahahah wtf are you talking about man ....steroids make you stronger which in turn helps you hit the ball further hahaha
To those who say steroids were not banned in 1998 must understand that anyone using a controlled substance without a doctor's prescription was taking an illegal substance. In 1991 then Commissioner Fay Vincent issued an official MLB memo to all players that possession, sale, or use of illegal drugs (including non-prescribed steroids) were strictly prohibited.
Growing up mark was 1 of my favorite players. Steroids or no steroids he had a swing that was just nice and easy not to mention quick wrist. Back then 10,15,20 years ago the "steroid" issue wasn't as big as it is today. Alot of the power hitters were taking stuff that they could get at a local drug store. It was the thing to do back then. Either way I can't hate mark for doing it even tho he didnt need to when he smashed 49homeruns his rookie year without the help of drugs
You still gotta have to put the bat next to the ball and it has to be perfect for a homerun. barry bonds also has a batting eye also but Jason Giambi does not have that same batting eye. Its hard to hit a 90 - 97mph fastball thn taking steroids. Think about that !!!

have fun manuevering me around laughing at what i gesture myself to in different circumstances. but at the end remember this. your a bitch. u need to make sex a common comodity. more easily accesible and not a life or death scenario. your a stupid fuking whore
Also, it's not like you just take steroids and you're magically god. They make about a 15% difference in muscle mass. As for me study nutrition, I know these things. Steroids were a controlled substance but hey a doctor could be a fan of Mark and just give them to him and say "You need these for so and so". Who cares, he still would've been good and he didn't break the rules of the game.. Just jealous haters who haven't done shit with their lives are commenting.
Sad that I work for John J. McGwire in McGwire's Fitness in Ontario, CA...he being 1 of my bestfriends I know the truth about Mark. Never judge a book by it's cover people & know what steroids require which is double the excercise & it'll throw off Mark's swing. If he had been using from the 80s its a fact he wouldve been bigger than 230lbs, which he went past that greatly not until late 90s. Get Jay(Little Mac's) book "Mark & Me" to the truth from his own blood who defends Mark & blames himself
I really don't care if he used steroids. it wasn't illegal, so why the fuck WOULDNT you take it?? we watch this game for entertainment, its not like he cheated on your wife. get over it you pansies
dude was juiced, no respect for any of those home runs i saw, at the time in 98 i was awestruck by his home run hitting, now what i know, i am disgusted.
whatever he is or was, that was really impressive batting practice. any of us that work in big corporations like i do, and baseball is know this is how it works. Everyone is making money and succeeding and we got our all stars, cutting corners, doing things that we arent supposed to, and all your superiors somewhat know, but they dont say anything because of the success, but eventually the criticizing and complaining gets to a point where it has to stop and take a new direction.
for everyone who says he is a cheater....... do you know how many other players use performance enhancing drugs? so i guess almost everyone is cheating. im not defending mark, im just stating a fact. and btw there have been plenty of "huge" players, but none performed like he did, it wasn't all muscle people, homeruns take skill as well. again im not defending him, and the roid's obviously did affect his performance, but he's still a great player considering so many ppl use the drugs.
If a juiced pitcher is throwing to a juiced batter- who's cheating? Explain that to me. Not all the performance enhancing drug abusers were hitters. It all makes me sick, but let's be fair.
The Greatest Power hitter of all time, 10.61 at bats per home run, if his career wasn't riddled with injuries, he'd have hit over 700. Once the baseball writers give Alex Rodriguez a free pass on the steroid issue and elect him into the hall of fame, the only excuse they'll have to keep McGwire out is that he never played for the stupid Red Sox or Yankees.
@NewYorkStateOfCrime I wouldn't argue for a second that Griffey was the better all around player, but when it came to just hitting for power, particularly home runs, its hard to beat McGwire. he hit over 50 in 3 consecutive seasons, hit over 60 in 2 consecutive seasons, hit 49 his rookie season, and for a guy that missed so much time because of injury still finished with well over 500 home runs.
@Rknox7 griffey had plenty of injuries as well, mostly back problems from playing centerfield on turf. i couldn't even imagine how many bombs ken would have hit if he was more healthy......
I think anybody that needs to juce to play baseball should retire! it makes the game very unfair!! once they ban steroids threw major league you will see a totally differnt game!!
McGwire actually hit 49 homeruns when he was a skinny rookie so it isn't like he didn't have power before juicing. Sad that so many great players were doing it.
It's funny how many people say fuck him and "hate" him. You know good and damn well if you knew anything about Mark that he was a great man and a great player. At least he admitted to it. I'm sure half of the people on here wouldn't have the balls to do the same. He's making millions and I'm sure he could care less about what you have to say.
gopped up on goop...gopped up on goop...gopped up on goop...gopped up on goop...gopped up on goop...gopped up on goop...gopped up on goop...gopped up on goop...gopped up on goop...gopped up on goop...gopped up on goop...gopped up on goop...gopped up on goop...gopped up on goop...gopped up on goop...gopped up on goop...gopped up on goop...gopped up on goop...gopped up on goop...gopped up on goop...and a damned cheater to boot
Man I miss the old stadium like the Astromdome...it's dull to have only new state of the art stadiums around today...I guess Oakland is the only old stadium around still...I miss great venues like Candlestick, the Vet, Three Rivers, Riverfront, etc...
In order to be a cheater, one has to break the rules. Steroids wasn't banned from baseball until after he retired. If there is no law, there can be no lawbreaker. Get your logic straight here.
@Jeffrey2038 I agree so why isn't anyone saying anything? I specifically remember him in an interview showing the interviewer a bottle of supplements he was taking that were considered enhancer's and illegal to some but was not illegal at that time in Baseball so what's the story?
@the13thof12 If you read my statement carefully, I didn't say McQwire was or was not lawbreaker. I do not know how he got his steroids. If he got them from a doctor then he didn't break the laws of the land. My statement reflected the fact that they were not illegal in baseball the time he used them. There are several pitchers in the Hall of Fame who used spitballs/greaseballs. They used these pitches while it was there was not a rule against it.
@cfl990 oh ok, so you must think that it was ok for him to use performance enhancing drugs that give a player an unfair advantage over another just because it wasn't "against the rules." HUGE CLASS ACT....
@Jeffrey2038 Technicality vs. disgracing the game...which weighs more heavily!? Even if he didn't "cheat" by the 1998 MLB standards, he cheated by the standards of fans, players, & coaches. He was on his way to being one of the greatest players of all time BEFORE he used...it's too bad he had to ruin the credibility of his ENTIRE career. He was an extremely talented and hard-working player who took the easy way out.
I'm a Cardinal fan, but he did the game wrong. He knows it too.
@Jeffrey2038 I totally fucking agree with you man. So what if he did steroids, he still hit the ball like a fucking madman with that great swing, and steroids only helped. Baseball should thank Mark McGwire for his contribution to the sport
@nicktobye, YES it does take skill to hit a baseball....BUT, steroids don't just make you bigger and stronger, they give an athlete BETTER EYE SIGHT, BETTER HAND EYE COORDINATION, and QUICKER REFLEXES.....ALL of which are essential to hitting a baseball hard......in other words, IT'S CHEATING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@raiden2331 i would have to say most of the problems with today's game is because of steroids and the everlasting affect their having on the league and players. and i would rather see a bunch of clinch base hitters than a bunch of home run hitters who a majority of strike out a bunch.
Greatest hitters of all time, in correct order.ickey (10)Wade Boggs (9)Derek Jeter) (8)Mickey Mantle) (7)(Roger Marris) (6)Albert Puljos (5)Babe Ruth (4)Ted Williams (3)Hank Aron (2)Ty Cobb (1)Pete Rose
I caught a foul ball he hit during a game when he was with Oakland in 1993. My dad was at the game in Cleveland in 98 when he hit one off the scoreboard. The oooh's and aaah's continued when he rounded the bases.
Oh, yeah and just for mcrdexfan: We know it doesn't mean taking will automatically make you a great homerun hitter. But, Sosa went from mediocre to spectacular, Mac went from great slugger to Ruthian, Bonds went from a 40 HR hitter in a good year to 73 while hardly being pitched to. Caminiti in '96 won MVP while hitting more homeruns in the second half that year than he had in ANY FULL season of his career. HE credited juice with the improvement. Don't tell us you believe Mac wasn't helped.
@hortboy32 I agree with you and i don't..yes steroids makes you better no doubt, but McWire hit 49 hrs a s a rookie pre steroid and Bonds was the greatest player I have ever seen before steroids, but yes steroids helped some so so players put up big numbers, I agree.
Use your head. All these juicers' power numbers skyrocketed as they bulked up through steroid use. Anyone with half a brain can see that. What people fail to acknowledge is that batting averages also jump. Is that a coincidence? If your muscles are stronger and quicker, your swing is quicker and more powerful. You get to start your swing later. More time to see pitch and square up ball. Duh, It does help you hit! Bonds won first batting title at almost 40. No, sorry. Not natural.
if taking steroids makes you a great home run hitter, then why arent all the scrubs in the minors and college and high school who take it superstars? taking roids makes you stronger, and yes this imrpoves performance, but it can only do so much. people who say that bonds wouldve never hit 70 home runs if he hadnt taken steroids dont know what their saying, i dont care if u bench 500 pounds, if you dont hit the ball dead on one in in one of the few at bats you get your not hitting a home run
If you think this was such a great accomplishment then you must love Barry Bonds, who broke McGwire's record despite setting records for walks and the many times pitchers hit him during his 73 HR season. During a national telecast in St. Louis Bonds was hit by the Cardinal pitcher and the crowd went wild. McGwire had it easy during his streak. HGH and steroids, in addition to the muscle growth, both improve vision. The guy cheated. It doesn't matter what "baseball rules" were. He cheated
Ruth played in less games than Maris, but in Ruth's day ground rule doubles were home runs. Maris played in an era of rampant pain killer use (illegal amount). McGwire used steroids. How about we just accept it for what it is.
He still had to time his swing and adjust to hit the ball which he did rather well wouldn't you say.... he still would have been a great home-run hitter regardless of steroids!
@adrahaxxen or he would have had 15 home runs less per year because they'd be caught fly balls to the outfield with the same exact trajectory but less power. Also, he wouldn't have healed as fast and had more injuries because steroids prevent and help you recover from injury until you abuse them.
Yeah it was wrong for him to use steroids. But the fact is baseball was down. The strike that canceled the World Series. Plus lets not forget. It wasn't banned in baseball. We should place a blame on owners, managers, and the baseball union for not getting a hold on the problem before it blew up
Not banned in baseball, but illegal in the states for about 20 years. That is a lame excuse, try another one. Baseball was not down, the ballparks were packed with 30,000 plus like today.
@kalel170 I have to agree with you. I don't care that steroids were illegal (he was a ball player, he never claimed to be a saint) however he shouldn't have done it.
Nevertheless, too much is made of players taking PEDs. It shouldn't have happened but nothing was done to stop it.
If it happened today I would feel differently but that was then. Let's have proper testing and penalties from now on but let's forget the past and concentrate on the future of the game we love.
They should start a steroid/gamblers Hall Of Fame, that would be much more fun and who knows what records they could break; No hitters every other game, 200 stolen bases in a season, .500 avg a season etc etc etc
little did they know the guy was roided out. LOL. I remember he hit 2 home runs that bounced off the left field pavilion roof and onto the parking lot at Dodgers Stadium in the same game.

Get Jay(Little Mac's) book "Mark & Me" to the truth from his own blood who defends Mark & blames himself

whatever he is or was, that was really impressive batting practice. any of us that work in big corporations like i do, and baseball is know this is how it works. Everyone is making money and succeeding and we got our all stars, cutting corners, doing things that we arent supposed to, and all your superiors somewhat know, but they dont say anything because of the success, but eventually the criticizing and complaining gets to a point where it has to stop and take a new direction.

for everyone who says he is a cheater....... do you know how many other players use performance enhancing drugs? so i guess almost everyone is cheating. im not defending mark, im just stating a fact. and btw there have been plenty of "huge" players, but none performed like he did, it wasn't all muscle people, homeruns take skill as well. again im not defending him, and the roid's obviously did affect his performance, but he's still a great player considering so many ppl use the drugs.
mckmetall 1 year ago

Rknox7 1 year ago
@Rknox7 Mark Mcgwire is one of the best power hitters of all time, but imo, Ken Griffey was better.
NewYorkStateOfCrime 1 year ago
@NewYorkStateOfCrime I wouldn't argue for a second that Griffey was the better all around player, but when it came to just hitting for power, particularly home runs, its hard to beat McGwire. he hit over 50 in 3 consecutive seasons, hit over 60 in 2 consecutive seasons, hit 49 his rookie season, and for a guy that missed so much time because of injury still finished with well over 500 home runs.
Rknox7 1 year ago
@Rknox7 griffey had plenty of injuries as well, mostly back problems from playing centerfield on turf. i couldn't even imagine how many bombs ken would have hit if he was more healthy......

In order to be a cheater, one has to break the rules. Steroids wasn't banned from baseball until after he retired. If there is no law, there can be no lawbreaker. Get your logic straight here.
Jeffrey2038 1 year ago 41
@Jeffrey2038 I agree so why isn't anyone saying anything? I specifically remember him in an interview showing the interviewer a bottle of supplements he was taking that were considered enhancer's and illegal to some but was not illegal at that time in Baseball so what's the story?

the13thof12 1 year ago
@the13thof12 If you read my statement carefully, I didn't say McQwire was or was not lawbreaker. I do not know how he got his steroids. If he got them from a doctor then he didn't break the laws of the land. My statement reflected the fact that they were not illegal in baseball the time he used them. There are several pitchers in the Hall of Fame who used spitballs/greaseballs. They used these pitches while it was there was not a rule against it.

@dcaff330 no but to compare it to murder is the fucking dumbest thing i have ever heard of
cfl990 1 year ago
@Jeffrey2038 Technicality vs. disgracing the game...which weighs more heavily!? Even if he didn't "cheat" by the 1998 MLB standards, he cheated by the standards of fans, players, & coaches. He was on his way to being one of the greatest players of all time BEFORE he used...it's too bad he had to ruin the credibility of his ENTIRE career. He was an extremely talented and hard-working player who took the easy way out.
I'm a Cardinal fan, but he did the game wrong. He knows it too.

Grapes428 1 year ago
roids or no roids mcgwire and bonds had two of the most beautiful and perfect swings of all time... that DOES take skill
nicktobye 1 year ago
Oh, yeah and just for mcrdexfan: We know it doesn't mean taking will automatically make you a great homerun hitter. But, Sosa went from mediocre to spectacular, Mac went from great slugger to Ruthian, Bonds went from a 40 HR hitter in a good year to 73 while hardly being pitched to. Caminiti in '96 won MVP while hitting more homeruns in the second half that year than he had in ANY FULL season of his career. HE credited juice with the improvement. Don't tell us you believe Mac wasn't helped.
hortboy32 1 year ago
@hortboy32 I agree with you and i don't..yes steroids makes you better no doubt, but McWire hit 49 hrs a s a rookie pre steroid and Bonds was the greatest player I have ever seen before steroids, but yes steroids helped some so so players put up big numbers, I agree.
impassable 1 year ago
Use your head. All these juicers' power numbers skyrocketed as they bulked up through steroid use. Anyone with half a brain can see that. What people fail to acknowledge is that batting averages also jump. Is that a coincidence? If your muscles are stronger and quicker, your swing is quicker and more powerful. You get to start your swing later. More time to see pitch and square up ball. Duh, It does help you hit! Bonds won first batting title at almost 40. No, sorry. Not natural.
hortboy32 1 year ago
Got to see homerun 67, 68, 69 and 70. He made me an even bigger cardinal fan.
mrdantheo 1 year ago
if taking steroids makes you a great home run hitter, then why arent all the scrubs in the minors and college and high school who take it superstars? taking roids makes you stronger, and yes this imrpoves performance, but it can only do so much. people who say that bonds wouldve never hit 70 home runs if he hadnt taken steroids dont know what their saying, i dont care if u bench 500 pounds, if you dont hit the ball dead on one in in one of the few at bats you get your not hitting a home run
mcrdexfan 1 year ago
If you think this was such a great accomplishment then you must love Barry Bonds, who broke McGwire's record despite setting records for walks and the many times pitchers hit him during his 73 HR season. During a national telecast in St. Louis Bonds was hit by the Cardinal pitcher and the crowd went wild. McGwire had it easy during his streak. HGH and steroids, in addition to the muscle growth, both improve vision. The guy cheated. It doesn't matter what "baseball rules" were. He cheated
fek2000 1 year ago
Ruth played in less games than Maris, but in Ruth's day ground rule doubles were home runs. Maris played in an era of rampant pain killer use (illegal amount). McGwire used steroids. How about we just accept it for what it is.

He still had to time his swing and adjust to hit the ball which he did rather well wouldn't you say.... he still would have been a great home-run hitter regardless of steroids!
adrahaxxen 2 years ago
@adrahaxxen or he would have had 15 home runs less per year because they'd be caught fly balls to the outfield with the same exact trajectory but less power. Also, he wouldn't have healed as fast and had more injuries because steroids prevent and help you recover from injury until you abuse them.

Yeah it was wrong for him to use steroids. But the fact is baseball was down. The strike that canceled the World Series. Plus lets not forget. It wasn't banned in baseball. We should place a blame on owners, managers, and the baseball union for not getting a hold on the problem before it blew up
kalel170 2 years ago
Not banned in baseball, but illegal in the states for about 20 years. That is a lame excuse, try another one. Baseball was not down, the ballparks were packed with 30,000 plus like today.
colbymercury 2 years ago
@kalel170 I have to agree with you. I don't care that steroids were illegal (he was a ball player, he never claimed to be a saint) however he shouldn't have done it.
Nevertheless, too much is made of players taking PEDs. It shouldn't have happened but nothing was done to stop it.
If it happened today I would feel differently but that was then. Let's have proper testing and penalties from now on but let's forget the past and concentrate on the future of the game we love.
