@TheNile182 It's part of the gag. In the original version of the scene, the one with Shinji, they had a box of toothpicks providing censorship. The straw is used as censorship in a similar manner. It's not that they want to open the film out to a wider audience, it's just that the homage would not have the same meaning if the were no straw there.
