binaural recordings do sound real, but our brains aren't very good at telling front and back. You can have a friend snap in fingers in front of and beind you, while your eyes are closed. Then have the friend do the same for left and right. We can easily tell left and right, but front and back not so much. For this reason, forced front and back with surround sound is much more impactful. Of course you'd need a surround sound headset or system. Mix that with binaural, and WOW.
I live near an airport, and I genuinely thought a real plane was flying over my house, drowning out what was being played on this video. When I took the earphones off, there was nothing. So, very nicely played - sounded very natural.
@PazCCFC haha i DONT live near an airport and i thought the exact same thing coz i was in another computer window, course as soon as i took the headphones of to find there was no plane there, i then realised that i had clicked on the link to this page for aeroplae flying overroof
But... Doesn't that already happen in your ear, when you play back the recording? If you place the microphone in the earcanal, your'e enhancing the sound TWICE before it gets to the brain!
Excellent, that is a great demonstration. As someone else commented, it is hard not to look out the window to check it is real.
Does anyone put the microphones deep inside the styrofoam head, to simulate the frequency response of the ear canal, and how it changes with direction?
I used Apex 185 pencil mics, I placed them on either side of a styrofoam head. I also used presonus MP preamps- very nice clean preamps, I'd recommend them.
I live by an airport also and I frequently get this sound and I love airplanes. This sounds real!

That is exactly what I want to try next, simulating the frequency response of the ear canal.

Interesting to see more people using Binaural !!
Do drop in at my page to hear my Binaural Demo... you'll see the effect is much more dramatic when sounds are within 5 feet or so :)
