@eudelima She was singing live, it's just that the uploader replaced the audio due to problems.
Just saying but it would be impossible to lip sing to this simply because of the amount of vibrato required for the notes she holds. Its very easy to see she is really singing, she is one of the best female vocalists/divas of this generation along with mariah carey. This is the holiday people, so for those of you who love to put down beautiful music why not spend ur time trying to be more positive and happy. MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!!

@BloodofPatriots It's pointless to argue with all of these "experts". If they watched Pavarotti performing at the Met, they'd claim that he was lip synching.

@willsbob123 I am an expert lip-reader, and can vouch for the fact that Celine is not miming in this clip. You can even hear the sharp intakes of breath.
She has a good voice, but her mannerisms are not for me. And 'Oh com LED us adore him'? No thanks!
@Oldtinear I'm not saying that she's miming this, but this is not her live singing. This is an overdub using the actual CD track. Note the audience's applause makes not even the faintest sound, and normally the sound is captured. Play this along the CD, and you'll see. This is the second time Sony has done this with a song from her Christmas album (first time was O Holy night where she was in a chapel). QUIT OVERDUBBING, SONY!!! LET US HEAR THE REAL DEAL WHEN SHE SINGS LIVE!!!
@FowVayJetta Hmmm interesting. Do the sharp intakes of breath occur on the CD? If so, I would argue that the CD was recorded from this performance. It is odd, as you say, that the audience clapping is not heard initially, but it is at the end.
Again, I have been lip-reading for many, many years and have watched the close ups in this vid. I would bet money that what you see and what you hear are the same. i.e. not dubbing. My guess would be that the CD was recorded from this performance
@Oldtinear Yes, everything heard here (excepting the applause) can be heard on the CD, note for note, etc. Celine also usually imitates exactly how she sings her songs on CD, so lip reading might not help much. However, in most songs, she puts minor variations to some portions of the song, and in others, she would lower the key altogether (I guess to keep people from thinking she's lip-synching).
@FowVayJetta Look at 1;58. By chance, as she breathes in, she brings the microphone almost to her lips. You clearly hear this. In a recording studio she would not be using a hand-held mike, and you would not hear the breath intakes. The more I watch, the more convinced I am that what you see and what you hear are the same.
Also, consider the expensive professional choir. Are they going to get paid twice - once for this performance and again at a recording?
@Oldtinear Well, Here's what I can say for the audible breaths. Play the CD track with this, and tell me of any differences between the two. I have a feeling that Sony overdubbed this, so there won't be any difference. Mind you, I'm not saying she lip synced it, just that she actually sang the song, but Sony took the CD track and toyed around with the video so that everything matched up. The only thing that has me saying this is the no matter how much the audience applauds, there's no sound 4 it
@FowVayJetta I do not possess any Celine CDs to do what you suggest. My CDs are mainly classical. For example, I have the CD of Andrea Bocelli singing this song (available on Youtube). His version gives me shivers. I love the way he just stands and delivers his voice with no silly emotional head shakes. Incidentally, on the Youtube version the sound is slightly ahead of the picture. Not because he is miming! Have a look. To a lip-reader the out-of sync is immediately obvious. Is it to you?
@Oldtinear You don't need her CDs to do it. I said CD version. There are videos here of the CD version, so you can play the video and hear the song as if it were from the CD. Bocelli has his own style of pure vocal and maybe minor face movements. Celine's head movements are not a consistent trait. They're simply used to emphasise the emotion of the song or in lieu of a conductor's hands (once again, I use this also to time myself and to guide my voice). And yes, out of sync is glaringly obvious
@Oldtinear Out-Of-Sync actually peeves the bajesus out of me. You are missing my point however. I am not saying that she is LIP-Synching. Note carefully my words, so there's no further misunderstanding.
I honestly believe she sang this live.
However, SONY, her recording company, took the video and played around with (edited) it so that when they replace the video's audio with her CD track (overdubbing).
This is the second video of a performance from her album where Sony has done this.
@Oldtinear Ok, obviously, you have your opinion on the matter, and I'm not getting through to you with mine, and I'm not gonna fight over it. But I will say that there are 2 versions to every song she does. The one she records, which is released first, followed by performances. Take a look at the video I told you about, where I enclosed the URL suffix, and look for the official version for the same song, and tell me what you think. I know it doesn't make sense, but that's how some would do stuff
We may never agree about this. I rest my case on the audible breath at 1;58. You can see that she moves her head and this, by chance, brings her lips very close to the mike. We hear the loud intake of breath. The ONLY explanation is that what we see and what we hear are the same.
As for the audience clapping silently - this can be explained by sound engineers turning down the volume deliberately to suppress the clapping, or by not activating Celine's mike at that point.
@Oldtinear We're on the same path, it seems to me. Just that there's a slight misconception. It could be Plausible that the mics were turned off when the audience applauded, but there would still be a slight sound being captured, either before the sound team realise what's happening, or a faint sound resounding into the sound system. Take a look at this video. This would help prove my case on the Overdub theory: /watch?v=7Jr-2eyRtV4
We're on the same track, and I understand you very well. :)
You may be familiar with the way of counting seconds which involves saying 'one hundred, two hundred etc'
In other words, we can easily say three syllables a second. Each syllable can contain multiple lip movements - 'one' contains two! So, in lip reading, you are following movements which typically take about a tenth of a second each. In this vid, Celine is spot on. She is not even a tenth of a second out at any point. Nobody can mime that well!
@Oldtinear wait, I just noticed a comment. You're hearing impaired? OK, this puts your argument at a disadvantage for audio. If you do have a decent amount of hearing still available, I want you to take CD versions of songs, and look up performances to the same songs. Like I said, you will find similarities because, being used to the song and its notes, she can perfectly imitate them repeatedly (I can do it, too). Also, through doing this, you'd be able to tell her speech pattern, and in turn...
@Oldtinear Also note the "Oh com led us" thing is partly due to her accent, as well as the slightly nasal vocals which she possesses. Also, when singing with power, one can put a little too much force in tongue movement, so when she means to tap the hard palate to make the "t" sound, she may put too much pressure and cause a "d" sound instead. Common mistake people make, with limited control over it.
@FowVayJetta ....you will in turn learn and understand her speech pattern, and therefore know where she may fall short in diction, especially where the limitations of her accent is concerned (eg. "If" becomes "eef", "hey" becomes "hay", etc.). You will also be able to understand how her mouth may move. Certain movements for sounds are either exaggerated or downplayed, often variable through emotion. Also try lip-syncing to her songs to get a better idea to match the sounds with mouth movements.
@Oldtinear You're not an expert of any sort. I've followed Celine for years now, and it is clear with her body movement and her facial movement around her mouth area that she is miming. The "sharp intakes of breath" are from the recording, Celine is so well rehearsed she knows the songs inside out therefore makes it look like she's singing - but when she mimes, it's completely obvious. So I don't think you're an expert at all, read any other comments on this page, they will agree with me.
@willsbob123 I have been lip-reading since measles destroyed my hearing as a child. I have no interest in trying to persuade you of my level of expertise. It makes no odds to me - either believe me or go fart in a bottle.
Liked Mariah's version better!!! This is too fast beat and choir-y. Mariah's version is slower, she took the time to sing the notes properly and to saturate them with passion. I also like Mariah's version better bcuz, MC personalized it with taking anything away and adding her mother in the whole deal was awesome!! those of u reading can check it out for urself and see which one u like better!
@eviLFanTaSY1991 I like Celine's more, though I do enjoy Mariahs. I think Celine's sounds more classic and classy. Very powerful and not overdone. Sometimes I think Mariah has too much going on at once and it can end up sounding like a lot of noise.
"Bone dis hoppy moanin". I finally had to Google "Adeste Fideles Celine Dione" to figure out that she was actually singing "born this happy morning". Whenever the vocal was recorded, she must have really gotten into it as her well-rehearsed American English lapsed into English with a definite French Canadian accent. Nonetheless, a spectacular performance.
yes she was on playback, she was supposed to, they taped this beforehand, this is for a disney show. but nonetheless its not like their using someone else's song.
and btw, both celine and mariah ended this song with a high note with vibrato. listen to mariah's live version on Christmas in Washington... Divas.
@Serinia4melodic Yeah you're totally gonna tell Celine how to sing <.<... NOT! She does that to increase the power and projection of her vibrato. Better luck next time hun go back to school=P
@Serinia4melodic Sometimes it can be achieved by jolting the jaw and back of the tongue. It provides the wobble by shaking the larynx, thereby distorting the sound to give it the shaky sound. Plus, using her diaphragm can cause the air to jolt and sound the larynx uncontrollably. I would know, I've dabbled in this before, and I prefer to use the jaw, neck, head, and tongue for the wobble effect. Try the teeth jitter thing she does at 2:11 when she starts "him", and you'll get something similar.
One thing about celine , is she is so technically good, she can knock it out, its very rare when she lipsyncs, i have seen her mnay times live, and she is always singing live, o come all ye fathful is deff live, she is the best, and is always on when she sings live
If you want to hear it with the original audio then listen to: watch?v=3HkeOYZAROg . It's essentially the same though, except that this is easier on the ears due to being recorded professionally without the echoes and noise. Before you scream lipping, watch that one and listen. My favorite Christmas song performed by an angel.
Celine, you are a constant pleasure to hear...Thank you for singing this gorgeous Carol..I am sure God felt very adored by your performance..Infact, you sounded like an angel too me..God bless you and all involved in this..A Very Merry Christmas from a huge South Pacific fan living in London..Alofa tele mo outo Uma!!!! xoxoxo
Why is everyone saying she is lipsyncing? The info clearly states that the author of the video altered the audio because it was messed up in the original video so he/she put the recording over the video! Celine's wonderful live or on record!
Seriously. If Celine wants her audience and fans to thing she isn't lip singing, then she needs to stop jaw-wobbling on those long notes. She's amazing when she's live, but in order for her audience to believe that she's singing live, when her voice needs a break, she needs to stop doing that.
ok it's obviously a playback but still i am a fan i adore her and nothing will change that.her lives are amazing so she HAS the right to do that sometimes!!!
I love Celine, but this is NOT live. This was done in 2009, years after her voice changed from having more of a chesty sound in her upper register to more heady. Any real fan would recognize that her tonality has changed some.
Do you seriously think that the audio is the only way one can tell if someone is lipping? The overexaggeration of her mannerisms also hint that this is not live, and if you don't acknowledge that, then you are delusional.
Chimier has nothing to do with me. I love Celine, and I really don't care all that much if she lips. But let's face reality, especially when it's this obvious. I love the fact that Celine has maintained her voice so well, but don't overexaggerate. Her voice isn't as flawless as it was back then, her tonality has changed and her belts are more heady than ever. She may have more voice than other Divas nowadays, but she's not perfect anymore either.
@crazy2hazy I appreciate your comment but I still believe that Celines voice is flawless. Have u seen the Power of Love live in Boston?
He voice is stronger and pulls you in.
I know Celines main concern is her Family now and her Discipline as a singer may have dropped slightly but she still has her voice /... but one shes back on her routine . Shes unstoppable.
her nakedness is very improperly to the beautiful song

FowVayJetta 7 months ago
@FowVayJetta I do not possess any Celine CDs to do what you suggest. My CDs are mainly classical. For example, I have the CD of Andrea Bocelli singing this song (available on Youtube). His version gives me shivers. I love the way he just stands and delivers his voice with no silly emotional head shakes. Incidentally, on the Youtube version the sound is slightly ahead of the picture. Not because he is miming! Have a look. To a lip-reader the out-of sync is immediately obvious. Is it to you?
Oldtinear 7 months ago
@Oldtinear You don't need her CDs to do it. I said CD version. There are videos here of the CD version, so you can play the video and hear the song as if it were from the CD. Bocelli has his own style of pure vocal and maybe minor face movements. Celine's head movements are not a consistent trait. They're simply used to emphasise the emotion of the song or in lieu of a conductor's hands (once again, I use this also to time myself and to guide my voice). And yes, out of sync is glaringly obvious
FowVayJetta 7 months ago
@Oldtinear Out-Of-Sync actually peeves the bajesus out of me. You are missing my point however. I am not saying that she is LIP-Synching. Note carefully my words, so there's no further misunderstanding.
I honestly believe she sang this live.
However, SONY, her recording company, took the video and played around with (edited) it so that when they replace the video's audio with her CD track (overdubbing).
This is the second video of a performance from her album where Sony has done this.
FowVayJetta 7 months ago
@FowVayJetta 'when they replace the video's audio with her CD track'
You seem to believe that there are two recordings:
1. The recording of the singing from the performance shown in this vid.
2. A separate studio recording, whose sound has been used to replace the sound from 1, the result being published on a CD.
Have you any evidence that version 2 has ever existed? Why would version 2 have the audible intakes of breath such as 1:58?
The simplest explanation is that only version 1 exists.
Oldtinear 7 months ago
@Oldtinear Ok, obviously, you have your opinion on the matter, and I'm not getting through to you with mine, and I'm not gonna fight over it. But I will say that there are 2 versions to every song she does. The one she records, which is released first, followed by performances. Take a look at the video I told you about, where I enclosed the URL suffix, and look for the official version for the same song, and tell me what you think. I know it doesn't make sense, but that's how some would do stuff

@Oldtinear and I meant to say "so they can replace...."
FowVayJetta 7 months ago
We may never agree about this. I rest my case on the audible breath at 1;58. You can see that she moves her head and this, by chance, brings her lips very close to the mike. We hear the loud intake of breath. The ONLY explanation is that what we see and what we hear are the same.
As for the audience clapping silently - this can be explained by sound engineers turning down the volume deliberately to suppress the clapping, or by not activating Celine's mike at that point.
Oldtinear 7 months ago
@Oldtinear We're on the same path, it seems to me. Just that there's a slight misconception. It could be Plausible that the mics were turned off when the audience applauded, but there would still be a slight sound being captured, either before the sound team realise what's happening, or a faint sound resounding into the sound system. Take a look at this video. This would help prove my case on the Overdub theory: /watch?v=7Jr-2eyRtV4
We're on the same track, and I understand you very well. :)
FowVayJetta 7 months ago
@FowVayJetta 'lip reading might not help much'
You may be familiar with the way of counting seconds which involves saying 'one hundred, two hundred etc'
Oldtinear 7 months ago
@Oldtinear wait, I just noticed a comment. You're hearing impaired? OK, this puts your argument at a disadvantage for audio. If you do have a decent amount of hearing still available, I want you to take CD versions of songs, and look up performances to the same songs. Like I said, you will find similarities because, being used to the song and its notes, she can perfectly imitate them repeatedly (I can do it, too). Also, through doing this, you'd be able to tell her speech pattern, and in turn...
FowVayJetta 7 months ago
@Oldtinear Also note the "Oh com led us" thing is partly due to her accent, as well as the slightly nasal vocals which she possesses. Also, when singing with power, one can put a little too much force in tongue movement, so when she means to tap the hard palate to make the "t" sound, she may put too much pressure and cause a "d" sound instead. Common mistake people make, with limited control over it.
FowVayJetta 8 months ago
@FowVayJetta ....you will in turn learn and understand her speech pattern, and therefore know where she may fall short in diction, especially where the limitations of her accent is concerned (eg. "If" becomes "eef", "hey" becomes "hay", etc.). You will also be able to understand how her mouth may move. Certain movements for sounds are either exaggerated or downplayed, often variable through emotion. Also try lip-syncing to her songs to get a better idea to match the sounds with mouth movements.
FowVayJetta 7 months ago
@Oldtinear You're not an expert of any sort. I've followed Celine for years now, and it is clear with her body movement and her facial movement around her mouth area that she is miming. The "sharp intakes of breath" are from the recording, Celine is so well rehearsed she knows the songs inside out therefore makes it look like she's singing - but when she mimes, it's completely obvious. So I don't think you're an expert at all, read any other comments on this page, they will agree with me.
willsbob123 7 months ago
@willsbob123 I have been lip-reading since measles destroyed my hearing as a child. I have no interest in trying to persuade you of my level of expertise. It makes no odds to me - either believe me or go fart in a bottle.
Oldtinear 7 months ago
@Oldtinear I don't believe you, you complete mong. It's 100% obvious she's miming in this video.

@willsbob123 Again, you are confusing me with someone who gives a toss about what you believe.

Liked Mariah's version better!!! This is too fast beat and choir-y. Mariah's version is slower, she took the time to sing the notes properly and to saturate them with passion. I also like Mariah's version better bcuz, MC personalized it with taking anything away and adding her mother in the whole deal was awesome!! those of u reading can check it out for urself and see which one u like better!
eviLFanTaSY1991 10 months ago

Nonetheless, a spectacular performance.
expoboy52 11 months ago
yes she was on playback, she was supposed to, they taped this beforehand, this is for a disney show. but nonetheless its not like their using someone else's song.
and btw, both celine and mariah ended this song with a high note with vibrato. listen to mariah's live version on Christmas in Washington... Divas.

I'm an atheist and not particularly a Celine Dion fan but this is pretty awe inspiring.

she moves her jaw.. why? her vibrato comes from the diafragm not from the mouth

@Serinia4melodic because this is lipped xd
sentfromupabove 9 months ago
@Serinia4melodic Alot of singers do that when they are live and lipping. Whitney Houston does it constantly, it has been refered to as Gospel Jaw lol
scramasboy 9 months ago
@Serinia4melodic Yeah you're totally gonna tell Celine how to sing <.<... NOT! She does that to increase the power and projection of her vibrato. Better luck next time hun go back to school=P
Zarenthar 9 months ago
@Serinia4melodic Whitney Houston does so too. This performance was outstanding!
billiswilling 8 months ago
@Serinia4melodic because hers ISNT coming from her diafragm
funnyfacerful 8 months ago
@Serinia4melodic Sometimes it can be achieved by jolting the jaw and back of the tongue. It provides the wobble by shaking the larynx, thereby distorting the sound to give it the shaky sound. Plus, using her diaphragm can cause the air to jolt and sound the larynx uncontrollably. I would know, I've dabbled in this before, and I prefer to use the jaw, neck, head, and tongue for the wobble effect. Try the teeth jitter thing she does at 2:11 when she starts "him", and you'll get something similar.
FowVayJetta 8 months ago
@Serinia4melodic Because she's Celine lol shes an exception.

One thing about celine , is she is so technically good, she can knock it out, its very rare when she lipsyncs, i have seen her mnay times live, and she is always singing live, o come all ye fathful is deff live, she is the best, and is always on when she sings live
seanmalynn 1 year ago
If you want to hear it with the original audio then listen to: watch?v=3HkeOYZAROg . It's essentially the same though, except that this is easier on the ears due to being recorded professionally without the echoes and noise. Before you scream lipping, watch that one and listen. My favorite Christmas song performed by an angel.

Why is everyone saying she is lipsyncing? The info clearly states that the author of the video altered the audio because it was messed up in the original video so he/she put the recording over the video! Celine's wonderful live or on record!

dandman1575 1 year ago
Seriously. If Celine wants her audience and fans to thing she isn't lip singing, then she needs to stop jaw-wobbling on those long notes. She's amazing when she's live, but in order for her audience to believe that she's singing live, when her voice needs a break, she needs to stop doing that.

I love Celine, but this is NOT live. This was done in 2009, years after her voice changed from having more of a chesty sound in her upper register to more heady. Any real fan would recognize that her tonality has changed some.
crazy2hazy 1 year ago
@crazy2hazy Like I said in the video description , I replaced the audio.
People need to stop with The Lip Thing...Just Enjoy the music.
Celine is still hitting the notes and taking it home.
Her voice today is more powerful than before so her voice only improved
TheCelineDionChannel 1 year ago
@TheCelineDionChannel
Do you seriously think that the audio is the only way one can tell if someone is lipping? The overexaggeration of her mannerisms also hint that this is not live, and if you don't acknowledge that, then you are delusional.
crazy2hazy 1 year ago
@crazy2hazy WOW seeing that You and chimier are friends I know EXACTLY what im dealing with. You are chimier...
I said that the audio was replaced and u went all retarded on me?
I never denied anything , I just said to just shut up and enjoy the song..
UNlike many of our DIvas , Celine seems to be the only one that has maintained her voice...It didnt fade nor did it lose its power.
She can Sing and doesnt need to prove squat to any of the haters.
Celine Voice will go on ....
TheCelineDionChannel 1 year ago
@TheCelineDionChannel
She may have more voice than other Divas nowadays, but she's not perfect anymore either.
crazy2hazy 1 year ago
@crazy2hazy I appreciate your comment but I still believe that Celines voice is flawless. Have u seen the Power of Love live in Boston?
He voice is stronger and pulls you in.
I know Celines main concern is her Family now and her Discipline as a singer may have dropped slightly but she still has her voice /... but one shes back on her routine . Shes unstoppable.
TheCelineDionChannel 1 year ago
@TheCelineDionChannel
She has not sung that song fully live since about 1997...
I don't doubt that she still has her voice, but it's not like she has maintained her voice as well as someone like Barbra Streisand has.
