"One" is a famous song from a famous musical ("A Chorus Line"). If the contestant happens to be a Broadway fan, it's actually not a surprising answer.
@tryithere I wish you people would stop saying stuff like this. You KNOW it's NOT fixed, it's illegal and producers go through a lot to make sure of it.
I've seen that too. First he guessed "tobacco" when the only clue was "chewing". Right after that, his partner guessed "pizza" with the only clue being "Italian".
wow I never would have guessed 'Cheers' for one..... know that she got it after one clue I paused the video and thought for awhile but never came up with Cheers.
I can honestly say that I'd have never gotten Cheers out of Long nor A Chorus Line out of one because I never watched A Chorus Line & Long could mean any number of things.Cheers wasn't even a huge ratings sensaþion around the time this aired on NBC,although it was starting to catch on.
Yep. I also guessed Batman for Pow and A Chorus Line for One. Honest.
But then, if you know in advance that they will be getting it on one clue, then your mind kind of goes to this question: "Okay, what is the only thing that 'Pow' could be that could be guessed in one guess? Well, I remember those POW moments on Batman." And "What can you get from 'One' by itself? Well, by itself, it's a song title."
Not even a revival. The original was STILL RUNNING on Broadway until 1990! Held the record for longest running Broadway show until CATS broke it (PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is the current record holder.)
@ChrisZaney Revival nothing! The ORIGINAL Broadway production was still running when this episode was taped! The musical ran until 1990, and was at the time the longest running Broadway musical in history!
There was one time where a contestant got two puzzles in a row on the first clue. First, he guessed "tobacco" from "chewing", and then on the next puzzle, his partner guessed "pizza" from "Italian".
I got CURIOUS/GEORGE (not too difficult) and POW/BATMAN (what else?). LONG/CHEERS came up too quick for me to play along but I would have probably said Treasure Island. ONE/CHORUS LINE I would never had got in a million years, but I'm a guy and not gay.
These are one word clues so P.O.W. wouldn't be up there. Maybe M.A.S.H. because its a one word name of a TV show and pronounced "mash" (as opposed to M - A - S - H), but P.O.W. is not pronounced "pow", its pronounced by saying 3 abbreviated words: P (prisoner) O (of) W (war). Most likely Pow would be Batman or Ralph Kramden (Pow! Right in the Kisser), but most likely Batman since the Honeymooners line is a weird clue without Right in the Kisser.
@ChrisZaney yeah that's right up there w/ another video i've seen where one team got the first 2 puzzles in a game w/ only one guess i'm surprised that's not in this video
@ChrisZaney Yeah, the first time I saw this clip, I thought the same thing he did. It's the only thing that came to my mind. Anyone who knows that show would think that. :)
LOL, I also EVER guessing with one clue on my Super Password game on my DOS computer, there's just one clue "GIANT", then I guessing "James and The Giant Peach" and I got it right!
Oh man you had every one except for the best of all time. The famous Dick Clark incident. The first clue was "youthful" and the contestant guessed Dick Clark and it happened to be the answer to the puzzle. That was classic. You gotta post that one!
Jamie Farr had "SINGER" as his only clue. And he guessed "SEWING MACHINE" and that was the correct answer! I think that was in the Password Plus days with Allen Ludden. Anyone else remember that one?
i'm not too sure on the rules, so forgive me, but how on earth can u guess 'cheers' from 'long'? i don't understand the connection AT ALL, and when she answers she seems so confident.
There is a video posted on youtube of Betty White guessing OWL from just the clue NIGHT
I think some schenanigans go on in game shows with overheard clues or answers from the audience or staff. Also, those random wheels don't behave randomly on several gameshows.
Also, a better answer for the contestants clue of Nocturnal would have been OWL instead of Night (which Betty answered). Then, when the puzzle clue came up NIGHT, a better response for that would have been to go back to the word NOCTURNAL instead of going to Owl. Something fishy was going on here. Betty often had the right answer even when it wasn't the best answer. Betty has close ties with the Password show. I think there was some cheating.
lol there is no cheating on Password Plus, just because Betty White's husband was the host doesn't mean something sneaky was going on. In fact type in "George Peppard's Password Plus Rant" and you will see what I mean!
And the reason for that rant was because of the overbearing scrutiny for cheating.. which resulted from a LOT of cheating. Shows would only cheat through people they could trust not to blackmail them later, such as Betty White, and Richard Dawson on Match Game.
Dotto with Jack Narz was the first game show scandal. The 21 scandal broke 10 days later. There is a lot of fishy stuff going on in games shows to this day. Here's a list of shows I'm sure cheated or still cheat: Dotto, 21, Password, Price Is Right, Wheel Of Fortune. I'm sure there are many more.
For that first clip of the answer "Cheers," I would have gotten the answer on Thursday. For the second clip which was George, I would have gotten it on Boy, because I figured it was missing link. For the third clip of the answer Batman, I would have gotten it on West, I'm not sure what the other clues were for "A Chorus Line," but I would have gotten it on the fourth clue.
You're missing a clip when Vicki Lawrence solved with one clue. First clue was "mighty" and she guessed "mouse." I guess that the clip was posted and mighty was too obvious.
There was one case where a player guessed it on one clue 2 puzzles in a row! First of all, he guessed "tobacco" with the only clue being "chewing". Secondly, he guessed "pizza" with his only clue being "Italian".
