great days i was in the fratton end and when we scored the second goal i had my glasses rip of my face and was lucky to find them in one piece afterwoulds.
jesus, i remember that game well, although being a o u f c lad in the away end, it was a classic with santa coming on the pitch and holding the game up for 3 mins, with biley scoring the 2 goals in santa's added time to the loudest roar of a winner i've ever heard in 36 years of watching footie!!
I was at this game, at the away end. What the highlights miss out is that Santa Claus came onto the pitch in the second half - and it was during the time added on for this that Biley scored the winner.
ROFL - The insults I've had to endure about playing in League One with a -10 point start & come September the Skates will be playing in the Ryman Premier!
i think i speak for all true footbal fans when i say that it will be a tragedy when a famous and historic club like yours goes under...
but it will be worth it just for the look on that idiot's face, you know the bell ringer with comedy dreads who named himself: portsmouth leeroy primus fc, or some other embarassing shite. yah, anything that upsets people like that is nothing but good.
It is still one of the greatest games I have ever seen at Fratton Park and this is still the best team I have ever seen play for Pompey, even with all the players we have had in the Premier League.
@dinom236 i was there with the oxford boys & yeah what a gr8 game & the atmosphere was summat else! shame we went the other way since those good ol days but we're on our way back now, hope ya stay up, and we'l meet again sum sunny day lol, play up pompey! c'mon u yellows we're on the up again....
Those were the, days my friend , we are the Fratton end we'll sing and Dance forever and a day, we live the life we choose we fight and never lose, trhose were the days, Oh yese those were the Days,
La, la, la ,la-la la
La la la la la la.......................
05.23 look at the boy behind Alan Ball, he 's clapping first then bursts in2 tears bless him.
Classic game, we were in the Fratton End and when the second goal went in my mates trainer came off when the crowd went wild and jumping around. We never did find it and he had a soaking wet foot by the time we got home. PUP........
Yes know the feeling....I was on the North Terrace with my mates.......jumping up and down.. At the end of the game my mate found £20 on the floor. I soon realised I had lost £100 during the goal celebration!! Luckily we looked and found it buried in the ticker tape!!!!! Oh for the days of terracing and going fucking mental!
I was living in Havant at this time and often popped down to Fratton Park to watch Pompey. If I recall, Portsmouth missed out on promotion to Oxford, Birmingham and Man City. I think Biley left for Brighton at the end of that season. Did they get promoted the following season?
Yes they did miss out on promotion, I think you are right that they went up the following season and had a real miserable time of it.........lasting just 1 season!!!
@pete1201 Season after that. 84/85 we missed out on Goal Difference (I think), the next season - 85/86 by 3 points (to Wimbledon?) - then finally went up (and they changed it to only 2 teams going up as well) in 86/87 - 2nd to Derby IIRC. Yep, Biley went to Brighton for something like £45,000. And Hateley went at the end of this season here to Milan for £915,000.
I was 3 years old living in Ventnor IOW in 1984. My dad is a Spurs 'fan'/glory hunter,, but who have I followed since 1993(after moving to Australia in 1986)? PFC innit... :)
I was on the North Terrace/Milton End corner. When the winner went in I have never seen such madness and climbing of the railings to goad the Oxford fans. Happy days. Best ever finish to a Pompey game. Santa is a Pompey fan.

Fratton Park, wow. Hard to believe there was 22,000 fans there, sounded like 60,000. Iv never heard the Pompey chimes sounding that good.

The big match atmosphere and the capacity is being generated from the terraces all right.
22,000 ??????
I always suspected there was a few thousand more in those days.
(Faulty turnstiles lol).

You only have to look at the terraces to see what potential Pompey had when there was a decent capacity at FP.

Transpired later than Alan Biley had put in the transfer request because he'd been caught sleeping with other player's wives.

Cracking stuff.
I remember seeing Biley play for Cambridge United in a 2nd Div. game against Newcastle at the Abbey Stadium.
Same day my club (Spurs - glory hunter indeed!) shipped seven at Anfield.
I miss those days.

How much for the likes of 'Yosser ' Tait, Biley, Webb, Rafferty, Alan Rogers, Hilaire, Noel Blake these days. Humble days, but good times.
