  • so what is the point of the bucket on the lower roller if you dont use it? also how do you attach one one these to the opposite side of the saddle?

  • @kaibakitty05 buckle not bucket sorry ^.^'''

  • @kaibakitty05 Ok, good question. Most cinches, especially ones bought in the UK, do have a 'tongue' which might seem odd. However, the traditional way is not to use this because it is easier to judge the correct tension of the cinch by feeling it tighten. Horses can change their belly size almost daily yet people tend to just put it on the same hole every time regardless......continued in next post.

  • @jeanniethegrinch The way shown on the video comes from the cowboys who would often use the same saddle on various horses and would just 'know' when it felt right. You can sometimes pick up a cinch without the tongue if it annoys you, or get someone with a good tool vice to remove it for you (they are tough). However, on the opposite side you need to leave the tongue as you buckle up in the normal way with a shorter strap with holes called an 'off billet'.

  • @jeanniethegrinch Once this is fixed you don't normally unbuckle it when storing or saddling up. All of this is not to say you can't EVER use the tongue and holes with your latigo. Many people (especially in UK) just use the holes in the normal way. Just remember to make sure your latigo is long enough so you can thread it through the keeper (slot near the horn) so it hangs neatly.

So, these are the two ways to do it - it is purely a matter of personal preference....continued

  • @jeanniethegrinch Just one more point, get into the habit of checking the off billet strap regularly for wear and tear as these tend to be overlooked because they are not unbuckled much. Also, renew the latigo every 18 months as they can get stretched and brittle. By the way, have you wondered what that little slotted tab on the off side of the saddle is for?

Even experienced western riders don't know! If you don't, then I will explain in another post. Enjoy your riding.

    Happy Trails!!!

  • idc wat any one else says im new at cinching so this video helped me alot ive been out side all day practicing. ive been riding bare back i found my balance time to break out the saddle. thanks to this video and the sweet young lady who took time out to help others learn!!

  • i tie my saddle up like this in a daily basis but the cinch thats left over, see you have like alot of cinch left over so u wanna put that in the flap thingy beside the horn kinda below it so its not hitting the horse on the stomach while ur riding cause i imagine it annoys the horse.... well it annoys minne haha so thats just a tip :P PCE

  • Great video! My Dad showed me this way to cinch up almost 40 years ago and I still prefer this method when I ride western. Thanks for the how-to, I'll share with some friends new to western tack!

  • I love tying the cinch this way.

  • Thanks so much for showing us how to tie the cinch, I have tried several ways and not one looked secure this does look secure and tidy!

really appreciate you taking the time>

  • Thank you so much for posting this. I'm a beginner with horses and I've been watching this video over and over again just so that I can remember how to do this.

  • Thank you so much! This is very helpful.

  • thats 1 way of tieing a cinch but for your saddle should u just lock it n thread the strap up to the leather tab on the left and let it hang!

  • @nuttyally Yes, the way I have shown is the traditional way when using a latigo without holes. You would normally only use the latigo keeper when using a latigo with holes - pretty similar to the English way. Then you would thread the the excess through the keeper so it hangs nice.

  • The saddle pad that your using is way to thin.

  • @09meandmyhorses You are right of course. Actually, the thin saddle blanket was for the video purpose only, you should use a proper pad. (underneath the blanket if you want) I normally use a 'limpet' pad. Around £60 but worth every penny as they conform to the horse and help with sweat distribution

  • @jeanniethegrinch Haha at this western store saddle pads were $105 but they were really good quality!

  • Thank you!! This was super helpful!!

  • Thanks soooo much! i was looking at soooo many videos to find a video to tie a cinch!!! i just got a western arab and i kept asking everyone to tie that ONE PART! i was soooo enbaressed! But now i know how!!! Thanks sooo much!

  • THANK YOU THIS HELPED ME SO MUCH!

  • This is the way I learn as a kid, still works the best imo, but many riders I see use holes in the cinch? Biggest frustration I have with my english saddle is not being able to tighten it at the right spot and having to use a preset spot in the holes. Anyone know if there is a way to convert it to western style?

  • Im sorry! I accidentally pressed thumbs down :(

  • Very Helpful.

  • Yep this is the way I have always done it. Even professionals tell me i'm doing it wrong but it works for me and my horses.

  • thanks! great video. clearly explained. this really helped!!!!

  • Thank you!!

I was begining to wonder if I was the only person who still did this. every other video I have seen they use the Buckle.

never knew it was called a Texas T knot though. awesome video!!

  • Thanks!!!! This was sooooo helpful!

  • I'm glad you posted this video. So many people don't know how to tie the cinch right.

  • Very clear instructions, always rode english, but needed to know how to help others with western. Thanks!!

  • Good to see the old ways are the best ways. This is how I learned to cinch a saddle 20 years ago! And yes, after 20 years still remember, but find many unfamiliar with this.

  • How I wish I'd seen this vid 2 years ago when i bought my first western saddle ! Thanks , very useful .
