@MrJimmyboy1972 He is not a political officer. There was no such thing in the Wehrmacht, because Soldiers weren't allowed to be party-members. The guy you meen in the first weapon officer.
@MrJimmyboy1972 yes, soldiers were not allowed to join the party and if they were a member before they had to suspend the membership for the term of their duty. This was to make sure the soldies only accept orders from military officers and not from party leaders. On the other hand all soldiers of the Waffen-SS were members of the regular SS and therefore members of party.
@MrJimmyboy1972 he is EXO (first WO ) but there were no political Officers in the NAvy. He was indoktrinted Young man like my older uncles they explaned me that they wer indoctrinaterd and trained as political people but there was no political Officers in the Wehrmacht
In the end, one of I think two scenes that were criticised by the author of the original book. Throwing a oily rag into the face of an officer isn't a thing you should do, also an officer can't show it gets to him, destroys respect.
"Das Boot" is an interestung movie but it is a fraud as far as politics go. The German Navy was the most Nazified of the German military services after the SS. They were isolated form the homefront as well as having no members of the July 20, 1944 (and other) officers plot to kill Hitler. We now know high ranking German Generals had planned to arrest Hitler had he ordered the invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1938 and charge him with insanity. France and Britain caved in at Munich & we got WW II.
@jfm4871 Kriegsmarine was the LEAST nazified arm of the German military, to the point where the party wanted to replace it entirely with the Royal Navy upon occupation of Britian. Basing officer selections on party loyalty only began in 1943 , and out of all the Kriegsmarine branches the U-boat service historically contained the smallest number of Nazis. A lack of involvement with an assasination plot does not invalidate the accounts of the Kriegsmarine officers who served.
@451harri I disagree. The Luftwaffe was probably the least pro Nazi of the German military services. But we all have to recognize the brave crews who served in those U Boats and the fact they were serving their country with honor. Just as the brave men who served the Allies also did.
@jfm4871 You can disagree if you like, but I was under the impression that this was a historical fact. I may be mistaken.
But you're right about one thing - some people are quick to negatively judge the Germans who served at the time, but none of those people think that maybe the men who served weren't all nazis, they were just there to protect their loved ones and defend their homes. Even the pro-nazi ones could have just been deluded and lost. There are very few truly bad people.
@451harri Correct. During WW II individual Germans loved and served their country which did not make them rabid Nazi's, only German patriots, who loved what Germany was before Hitler took over in 1933 and a germany that represented over 1,000 years of history and culture that evolved into what became a united Germany under Bismark.
@jfm4871 Yeah, and as I said, even the supporters may not have been bad people. After all, we've all seen otherwise good people go astray or ddelude themselves from time to time - it's not entirely unreasonable to think that many of the citizens who claimed to support Hitler were taken in by propaganda or temporary bad judgement.
the capitan is having a discussion with the nazi political officer here. whoe has probably never been to sea before.

This was a morale booster for them, an almost sarcastic, gallow humor kinda thing.. Great movie, with many philosophical and moral undertones.
