I have all these compiz effects and the desktop apps/gadgets for my 2.1 ghz 1GB RAM laptop running Mint with Gnome. The desktop apps make it so slow, I am now down to the same speed as I would have on windows. Else Mint is ultra fast with only compiz, almost 3 times as fast as windows in everything.

i tried using ubuntu 11.04 on my older laptop. it sucked cause every codec/plugin for online media is either designed for windows/mac not LINUX so half of the streaming video sites wouldn't work. then, the ones that did were choppy as shit.

changed to windows xp black edition and everything works perfect and super smooth...

11.04 is very different from other releases, unity desktop, cool! to enable the above viewed effects in your ubuntu (no matter of wich version) open software center and search for compiz fusion and install it, and go to the compiz and activate what you want, fire, watter, cube...etc

how did you integrate the player in your desktop, and what do you use for widgets, desklets or screenlets cuz i don't know since the last time i have used them they where highly unstable and i am not so familiarized with the whole widget thing and i am too lazy to configure conky :D

it's Ubuntu using a thing called Compiz to do those effects. and yes, linux can be very difficult to setup on a computer. you have to do a lot of research. it's not like windows where you can just install it then install a few drivers then you're good to go.

@ronpack Ubuntu isn't really hard to set up, unlike other linux distros, in fact I read somewhere that it actually has less setup time and clicks to get to a usable desktop than Windows 7. Although I do agree that these effects would be hard to set up...

@liuksik Yeah I just realized that. I had no idea that Compiz Fusion existed until a few days ago. Pretty cool effects, although the water effect doesn't work for me and just gives a very dark (almost impossible to see) screen. Oh well.

@Hoot5000 The water effect malfunctions on one of my computers as well, though it works on another. The biggest difference, hardware wise, between the two is that the one that works has Nvidia graphics, wheras the one that does not has ATI. Since both are decent cards, my conclusion is that there's some problem with ATI drivers, or Compiz doesn't fully support ATI.

Or go the the SoftwareCenter and install it graphically.

you have to enable in compiz settings. Its in animations addons but not enabled by default. Just go to compiz setings and in the main window of settings go to Preferences. Then Plugins List uncheck Automatic plugin sorting and then select animationaddon and put it into the right box. Then you go to the main window and in section Efects in Animations you have more effects for closing minimizing maximizing.
