Wait, I don't know much about chess and the world around it, but I saw Susan Polgar was 4-timer winner in the WOMENS league ? Am I mistaking, and if not, could someone please tell why in the name of everything that is logical that men and women aren't competing in the same league ? Is it a left-over from back when people thought women didn't have as much mental capabilities as a man and it therefor would be 'unfair' or what is their reasoning to have it like this today?
@MissMaybellen Women are allowed to play in the actual world chess championships, but there isn't any. The top chess players are dominated by men, so in the end there are some women-only chess competitions, maybe so that it will inspire girls to play chess.
@joyfulvulture If there had been room enough in my original message, I would've stressed the fact that I'm not a feminist, but just found it curious. And I was trying to get informed by asking the question, so I don't see the big problem, other than that you a man who's gotten to offensive toward feminism that you see it everywhere WHEN THERE ISNT ANY! Let this youtube debate be about chess and the cold war and not about feminism
"could someone please tell why in the name of everything that is logical that men and women aren't competing in the same league ? Is it a left-over from back when people thought women didn't have as much mental capabilities as a man"
you're gonna tell me you werent being a delusional feminist after reading that? hahah ok.
@MissMaybellen:You are in fact "mistaking"-in Chess, there is a rating system-the ELO rating system-the relative strengths of chess players are assessed as per their rating-so a chess player is eligible to participate in a tournament or match only if He has the appropriate rating-in other words, for example, one cannot participate in a Category 20 tournament (which requires a rating between 2726-2750) if your rating is 2300-with a rating of 2300,you are eligible for a cat.2 tournament(2726-2300)
@MissMaybellen:So it's not an arbitrary system in Chess, and there's no patriarchal unfairness at work;the fact is that Women in general just do not play Chess at the same leven as Men in general;in the last 150 years since Paul Morphy, who may be rightly considered as the Founding Father of Modern Chess, there has been, literally,a handful of Women who played chess at a level, where,at least to some extent, they could hold their own in a few games(and even win a couple)against top level Men players-
@MissMaybellen:Even these exceptional Ladies did not maintain the presence consistently over a period of time in the very high categories-beyond a point, they could not compete with Men.It may interest you to know that Women's Tournaments, the categories are 200 points lower-a Category 1 tournament for Men requires an average rating of 2251 to 2275,whereas a Category 1 tournament for Women requires an average rating of 2051 to 2075.Again,there is no unfairness here-
@MissMaybellen:This handicap is for the benefit of Women, not Men-An exceptional Lady like Judith Polgar did not require this handicap, and there was no unfair system that forced her to abide by it even though she didn't need it-she played in Men Tournaments only because her level in Chess (as is reflected by her ELO rating) qualified her for the same-but even she did not reach the very highest level, although she did manage to win games against top Male Grandmasters over the course of her career-
@MissMaybellen:You assume that we have entered some "new","enlightened" era where everyone assumes that Women are inherently equivalent to Men in every way(and vice-versa)and Women essentially have all the qualities and capacities that Men have,in the same measure(and vice-versa)-& no doubt many people think this is True-but not everyone-
@MissMaybellen:The thing is,it is as wrong to compare Women in general to Men in general on the basis of an activity such as Chess,as it is to compare the Night to the Day on the basis of brightness or darkness-the Day is not meant to be dark, and the Night is not meant to be bright-also,it is the Day BECAUSE it is Bright, and it is Night BECAUSE it is Dark-You cannot separate the quality of something from the thing itself-in other words,it would not be fire if it was not hot-on this basis-
@MissMaybellen:Masculine & Feminine are NOT equivalent in terms of qualities & characteristics-Men & Women are not equivalent in terms of the qualities, capacities, strengths, weakensses etc.In other words, there ARE in fact activities & areas which are inherently Masculine&vice-versa-Chess is a combination of Art,Science&Sport-& it is fundamentally a Struggle-the fact is that these are inherently Masculine activities,as they involve qualities&capacities that are inherently Masculine-not Feminine.
@MissMaybellen:That is why Women in general do not perform in activities such as Chess at the same level as Men in general-it's not a question of superiority or inferiority or equivalence-it's a question of Yin&Yang-it's the same reason Men in general cannot perform in the area of Motherhood at the same level as Women-if Women played Chess at the same level as Men,they wouldn't BE Women-they would be Men,just as if the Night was as bright as the day,it wouldn't be Night-it would be Day...
@MissMaybellen:If Men in general could perform the role of Motherhood at the same level as Women, they wouldn't BE Men-they would be Women, just as if Fire could be as cold as Ice,it wouldn't BE Fire-it would be Ice-this is Yin&Yang & it's the fundamental Truth-This is how Mother Nature has arranged things-basically,she designed the Masculine&Feminine to have opposite and complementary qualities-& Chess just happens to be an activity that has and requires inherently Masculine qualities-
@MissMaybellen:And by the same token,Motherhood is an essentially Feminine quality-it's futile to draw comparisons between which is greater-they are not meant to compete but complement-the New World Order ideology followers who don't like this arrangement should take it up with Mother Nature, because this is the way SHE wants things-fortunately for the rest of us who oppose the "equivalence of Men and Women" ideology, Mother Nature is no Women's Libber.
@MissMaybellen quite simply for the same reason as other sports. physical strength and dexterity in tennis, football, golf etc and mental strength in chess .. no mystery about it, the top women w/ the odd exceptions here n there cd not seriously compete w/ the top 200 men let alone the top ten
This Championship game was the most publicized worldwide in the entire history of chess because it took place during the height of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. Therefore, both players were subject to considerable pressure to achieve victory. When Bobby Fischer defeated Boris Spassky became the first American to win the World Championship and also gave an end to Soviet domination 35 years of World Chess title.
There is something similar with Bobby Fischer and Glenn Gould
