Nice video! I have a little question though. I'm interested in making stop-motion animation but I'm looking to capture that oldish 35mm look rather than the crisp HD stuff you see nowadays. There's something about film that just has a distinct and unique beauty and character that the more common methods nowadays lack. So my question to you is, do you recommend the Canon HV20/30 + 35mm adapter for the look I'm interested to capture vs buying a 35mm film camera + risking screwing up the film?
@volpe3fuego Well, I've never worked with a 35mm film camera, so I can't comment on that. Now I own a Video DSLR camera (550D) and it already gives you quite a filmic look but a 35mm adapter still looks more 'analog' and therefore more filmic. IMHO a good 35mm adapter can emulate very well the look of a 35mm film camera.
@MattFerroFilms Yeah, I still regret a bit selling my adapter for a DSLR. I wouldn't say an adapter is necessarily cheaper and a DSLR comes with a lot of advantages but it still can't capture the cinematic touch an adapter can.
hey i love your work man! Question, I heard the hv30 with the sgblade has a ton of vignetting, how were you able to remove it? spacers or did you just zoom in a lot.
@theryaner Yes, I used a spacer for it. I wouldn't say that the HV30 specifically has problems with vignetting. Mostly vignetting has to do with the focal length. The higher the less vignetting. In most cases in this video I used the 135mm. That's why there is practically no vignetting. Of course you can always remove a lot of it in post if you're filming with wide angle lenses.
@ComPodView thanks for the reply! What size spacers are you using and how bad is the vignetting with a 50mm? Just wondering because the sgblade isn't exactly meant for cameras such as the hv30 and I'm sorta on the fence between this or the handy35. With the handy35's condenser lens it seems like you can pretty much get rid of all the vignetting. The SGblade does have better features tho, so i dunno.
@theryaner Hey, I'm using the SGpro, not the SGblade and my one came already with a spacer of which you could adjust the size. But it's not that much, so I don't think there will be a big difference to the SGblade. Watch our newest movie (watch?v=IlGEcKYOLKQ). I'd say, about 90% of the shots were done with 50mm. No correction of vignetting at. Still there would have been the option of reducing it in post.
I'd go with the Blade over the Handy35; it looks way better, but it also costs more.
@theryaner (-> continuation) Another question. Why not buying a DSLR? You wouldn't have any problems with vignetting. I recently sold my HV30 + adapter for a 550D (or T2i in USA). But I know, there are pro's and con's for both setups...
@ComPodView thanks for the input. I have looked into dslrs but seriously, I won't use anything unless it's a 7d or higher. I know the video quality is basically the same but i really don't like the build quality on the t2i. I also like the look of 35mm adapters more so than dslrs, I'll probably end up getting a dslr for night/indoor shoots in the future. But for now I'd rather stick with an adapter. Thanks for answering my questions.
@ComPodView checked out your movie, and it's great! nice work. I do love the video quality but some of shots has way too much vignetting for my taste. The subtle black hue on the sides really bugs me for some reason, some people like it but I don't. I'm pretty sure i'll be happy with the blade or the handy, but I still don't know which one to get lol.
@ComPodView Handy35: little to no vignetting great image quality portable/easy setup BLADE: better features Arguably a better film look Build quality is about the same imo interchangeable gg screen both sound pretty good to me. Have you ever seen the movie xepoj? Possibly the best example of the handy35 put to good use. It's black and white so I don't get to judge the handy's colors but everything about it is pretty amazing.
@theryaner Hey, I checked out xepoj and it looks very good. But still I'd prefer the Blade because of the textured bokeh, it looks simply more filmic. Yeah, I can understand your concern with the vignetting. I don't have a problem with it but it's a matter of personal taste. I actually like a subtle vignette and I'd even add it to "normal" footage from time to time.
@SunnyShahFilms I bought it for around 800€ without the lenses. But it's not available anymore. They only sell the successor (SGblade) which is more expensive. Probably you can find used SGpro's.
Nevertheless I just sold my SGpro and bought a Video DSLR which has it's advantages but also disadvantages over a 35mm adapter.
@itscaseplace I have a SGPro, not a SGBlade, which has no interchangable ground glasses. The ground glass of the SGPro is the same as the RotoRazor 2. It gives you that cinematic bokeh but also looses a bit more light.
Hey, I use old M42 lenses. You can get them pretty cheap on ebay and they have a great quality. For this video specifically I used a 50mm @ F1.8 (35€) and a 135mm @ F2.8 (30€).
I think the HV30 has a Memory Stick slot althogh it's only used to make photos. For capturing video you still need minidv tapes.
what can you tell me about the hv30 camera? I think I'm getting one, since it's cheaper and great for beginners (like me). Is the Jag35pro a good adapter to start off? Look, I just want to make a movie and a movie that LOOKS LIKE a movie. I was wondering if it is feasible with the hv30. Please, tell me anything that I need to know or WARN me about. I'd appreciate it.
The HV30 is great. Sure, it has not all the manual abilitys a bigger camera has, but it gives a perfect image. I own the HV30 for 1,5 years now and I'm still satisfied. The Jag35 is a good adapter considering the cheap price. It won't give you the image like my SGPro (which is about thrice the cost) but it's still a good adapter. I saw a lot of footage from it and I like it, but it all comes down to the filmmaker. Some footages look awesome, some not. So it's up to you making it look like film.
There are a lot of other things to make it look like film. The lightning is probably the most important part. And it's also pretty cheap, I use halogen spotlight from the hardware store and they work pretty good. Another important part is the camera position and motion. A dolly would be a good investment as well.
A good color correction in the post is also necessary to make it look good. Well there is not only the camera and 35mm adapter to make it look like film, but they are very important.
In terms of image quality the SGPro and the SGBlade (with RR2 which is the better imaging element imo) are nearly equal. The SGBlade has some useful additions (like speed control, smaller size, interchangable imaging elements, collimation and a few more) but that doesn't really affect the final image. The problem is that the SGPro isn't sold anymore and the SGBlade is about twice the price. I would always look for used SGPros, but the SGBlade is still great for it's price.
Yes, I corrected it a bit in After Effects. But the footage itself already looked great. That's the gorgeous nature of the SGPro adapter. Everything looks already great :-).
The only downside is that it is a fairly bulky adapter to work with. You can never use it for running n gunning stand-alone! Plus... is it available now anywhere? I really wanna get it!!
Yep, that's the problem. The manufacturer doesn't sell it anymore. They just sell the newer SGBlade which is twice the price. Perhaps you can get a used one from eBay or film forums such as dvxuser. There's also a marketplace subforum on the shoot35 . com website, somethimes there are SGPro offers.

Yes, but it has a lot of drawbacks and it's use is very limited.
- basicly it doesn't look like film (a DOF adapter does), espacially the bokeh shows this effect.
- you can't do any camera movement because you're tied to huge focal length.
- you have a huge range of things in focus due to the focal length
- there is less depth due to the focal length
- you can't zoom in anymore
- the depth of field is still very shallow compared to a 35mm adapter
ComPodView 2 years ago
In comparison: It doesn't look near as good as a 35mm adapter and it can only be used for very specific shots, not an entire movie.

what were you shooting in 24p 30p or 60i
thebestevernikeman 2 years ago
Here in Europe we only have 25p or 50i. I used 25p. Sadly the HV30 doesn't support real 25p, so it's basically deinterlaced 50i.

Well, there are plenty of good examples. Simply search on Youtube or Vimeo for HV30. Espacially I like these three videos alot:
watch?v=ACVZp-UMD0Y (w/o adapter)
watch?v=Jdqo-v3J6Zg (w/o adapter)
vimeo . com/1675042 (with SGPro Adapter)
There is also a whole group on Vimeo for HV30 videos with nearly 2000 videos: vimeo . com/groups/hv30
