Wow, this was an early season. They now do more stuff automatically (if a card makes a hand into a 21, they will just put that on automatically, though I can see why they asked you: you might want to make another hand better instead, but still), and they now give a chip for winning the game along with the ones you got for each round won.
That's a REAL hard bonus to win.
BTW, this show was originally known as "Gambit" in the 70's (hosted by the Wink), which had a much different bonus round.
@Tubewings I was a mob member on 1 vs. 100 when it was first on NBC. They asked a question about how much a postage stamp cost. I hardly ever send anything through the mail, and I had just heard on the news the price was going up, so I guessed wrong. I argued that the answer would be right by the time the episode aired (the choices were a certain price, more, or less) but they said no. I was pissed, 'cause I figured with the kind of contestants they had that it was going to be some easy money.
As for the Power Chips, sometimes they are sponsered by Burger King, other times they are not. It's kinda alternating or something, as I've seen them do it in recent seasons.
Great job, Tim...even if the cards weren't exactly stacked in your favor during the bonus round, you still had a good run, and have given hope to those like me who STILL haven't gotten on a game show yet!
Hey, you did just fine. And don't worry about the endgame. That chance you took to land a 2nd 3 paid off, so you at least got another $1000. Jason Block got saddled with a mountain of 10's, too, and busted fast. And it turned out that the 3 cards he saw that weren't 10's would've made a 21.
Great job. Hope we see each other on more shows down the road.
This game is very low-paying in regards to today's standards. On average, two players will walk away with nothing and the other will with either $1000 or $2000. How lame is that.
But then what if the 10, theoretically speaking, would have been used at some point as a crutch. You can do a lot more with a 10, with 11 chances on winning, than a 20, with only depending on one card. Then again...maybe...it was nervousness? =p
Great! I live in the Czech Republic, but I was in the US for 5 weaks in summer 2008 and I spend every single free minute watching GSN. And Catch 21 was one of my most favorite show. We don´t have such show in Czech Republic (but we had for example Who want´s to be a millionaire, Weakest link, Family Feud - but our version is worst game show in the world, Family feud can´t be good without Richard Karn).
And I remember you. I saw your episode once I was in the US.
Thanks for responding. Well, $2000 is nothing to sneeze at, and I'm sure it's two grand more than the others got (when did they decide to abolish parting gifts)?
This show's kind of crappy (when does it stop being a commercial for mayonnaise?), but it's cool that you were able to shake some money out of it. It's always been a dream of mine to be on a game show, as I watched so many of them as a kid.
Good job on the show. You owned the question rounds. Thanks for posting this as I don't get GSN here. The show's not bad. The bonus round in particular is pretty interesting.
In response to "I don't understand why..." I'm willing to assume that's because they can't legally force the decision on you. As a contestant, you have to come to the conclusion to put the three on that column yourself. In other words, it's your fault if you blow it. Consider the instances on "Press Your Luck" when a contestant needs money and a spin to keep alive, and when landing on "Move One Space", they take the larger amount over the smaller amount with the spin, and subsequently lose.
good move there tim.

Did you really get knocked out on the first question, get into an argument with an associate producer, and leave the studio in a huff?

To be honest I think the Power chips are better when they are sponsored by Burger King.

When I play catch 21 online. If I had a 14, I would play the next card. But two 20s is to no avail.

by the way 10 is not a face card.

They're the same value. And many blackjack players will call a 10 a picture card because of that.

How do they shuffle those huge cards?

This game puts way too much of an emphasis on that getting a 10 means you need an ace.
There are only 4 aces in the deck, yet:
2 + 9 = 11 (four of each)
3 + 8 = 11 (four of each)
4 + 7 = 11 (four of each)
and 5 + 6 = 11 (four of each)
I'm just glad you got something out of that bonus round. It really looks like it would have eaten you alive.

How much did you actually get of the $2,000 after taxes?
bigfreeb21 2 years ago
It just got included in the rest of my annual income, so it's hard to say. It did put a dent in my refund this year, though not by much.

On Craigslist?! No way! Anyway this was fun to watch at 4 in the morn hehe. Good job Tim! Hope you buy something nice with the money! xD
saranghaeyo2326 2 years ago
That was tough. With those odds you had, you had to get outta there with two grand.

you got money and weren't empty handed at least. I can't imagine losing the beginning because i don't buzz in fast enough for the trivia questions.
rollercoasterfweak 3 years ago
you have yourself to blame for wasting a power chip on the jack, you should have realized an ace is no different with 10 OR 20.

It's easy for me 2 say u should have saved your power chips until absolute neccesary, but u still did a good job. I love catch 21.
chrispd3432 3 years ago
Considering the cards I got, I wouldn't have been able to make more than one 21 anyway.
Loogaroo1 3 years ago
Lol your little notes helped a lot plus fun reading them. That would have sucked if the last card was an ace..
What happened with the producer? lol.
