I love how there are artists out there who attempt to bring out the obvious extremes of a song like this, namely Marilyn Manson. But this version just states the song in nearly it's original song, and it's just as powerful as the other interpretations.

I have never seen this as a suicidal song. I love MASH, and this song always gets me in the mood to watch an awesome, if sarcastic, show. This song is powerful with and without lyrics. It's a masterpiece, and I've only now realized that.

in the mash fiml there was a man nicknamed the painless pole (mentioned in episode one of the tv series) AND he ends up commiting suicide and that is what the song is about

it actually has nothing to do with suicide in actually its more of a metaphor to describe what happened.
