Regarding Mike Altman, who wrote the lyrics at age 14: His father told Johnny Carson that, while he himself was paid only $70,000 for directing the film, MASH, Mike made over a $1 million from the song.
1 Word to Sony Music FUCK YOU you are all ignorand bastards to let a so wonderfull pice off musik lock the original version is reachless on the top and for which ? Money ... i hope that you eventually comes back to the rational and let the people listen to such a wunderfull pice off music
wow +3 ... brilliant stuff and all but maybe (if you're still here) you should mosey over to the Counting Crows channel and listen to some advice for those showing the signs. You know things are bad when... the girl on the car in the parking lot says 'man, you should try to take a shot.'
and that's why nick drake is still with us and this song was not about the love Drake had with someone who did not love him in return. I agree though the song is beautiful and so is our delicate lives
@kobrelly Yep, Drake was a great artist imo, and yes this song has nothing to do with Drake, because Drake never comitted suicide. He died from prescription drugs taken the wrong pill at night.
I love how there are artists out there who attempt to bring out the obvious extremes of a song like this, namely Marilyn Manson. But this version just states the song in nearly it's original song, and it's just as powerful as the other interpretations.
I have never seen this as a suicidal song. I love MASH, and this song always gets me in the mood to watch an awesome, if sarcastic, show. This song is powerful with and without lyrics. It's a masterpiece, and I've only now realized that.
I will soon die from a broken heart. this song will be playing as i pass from this life. I hope that no one ever has to feel the unending pain i have trie in vain to endure.
When I was a child, the mash version scared me to death. This version is so beautifully sad, and I now have an appreciation for the original version. How wonderful this is.
@rawrtoyou66 It depends on how you take the lyrics. At face value they are very depressing. But ultimately this thong is a symbol of ultimate freedom. This is something nobody can take from you. Ever. What would tey do to you? Sue you? Imprison you? Torture you?
...you'd still be a selfless bastard for choosing this option and will not gain any respect for taking the easy exit...
Jazz version is awesome, but they sing better than Johnny. That version is better to listen than original. Original is good in film, is good at movie theme but "Lady&Bird" is real "radio version"...
this version for me is more disturbing than manson's, although I like manson's and manic street versions too, all those artists add a different dimension to the track.
I love this original though, its haunting because it sounds so sweet yet you hear the lyrics.
I never noticed it for long time, but some years ago while searching info for an essay found the lyrics of the song and then relized how sad it is, watching the show never paid attetion to that
Hah. Same here. I'm amazed that something that I've always thought of as the "mash theme song" can be so beautiful, and be interpreted in so many different ways.
in the mash fiml there was a man nicknamed the painless pole (mentioned in episode one of the tv series) AND he ends up commiting suicide and that is what the song is about
it actually has nothing to do with suicide in actually its more of a metaphor to describe what happened.
it almost sounds like u desire such a thing (sad mood). Interesting, if that's the case, for I seek such things. And recently discovering this song, and various versions of it, I use it towards such means.
my other comment didnt finish as i was saying ihavent heard mansons version in a while so i dont no if i still loose it listening to mansons version(when i say loose i dont mean going crazy and all emo i just start thinking of the world nd my problems nd no im not emo)

Razors pain you,
And drugs cause cramp.
Guns aren't lawful;
Nooses give;
Gas smells awful;
You might as well live.
