This audience video was recorded in Sacramento in June 1998 and not in 1999. During that summer, John Cale and Siouxsie (with The Creatures) made a collaborative tour. Cale sang 4 songs and got out of the stage. Siouxsie then sang 4 tracks, etc.... For the encores, they both sang in duet on "Pablo Picasso", "Gun", "Murdering Mouth" ( a rare unreleased Siouxsie song) and they often concluded with this rendition of "Venus In Furs".
it's obvious Sioux and Cale handle this rather unsettling situation like the highly intelligent and sensitive persons they are - of course it's too much for that "girl-child" to on stage, especially for that song - of all VU songs! But both make it sound absolutely perfect and not offensive at all , even when Sue yells "...now bleeeeeeed foooor meeee!". This a lesson in impromptu f***-ups for generous artists on stage. Priceless!
kind of akward singing this song to a child.... When your parents dress you up like that and take you to a Siouxsie concert and put you onstage during Venus in Furs they pretty much have your future planned out for you.
I wonder how old that child / girl is onstage with siouxsie? I wonder if she's there with her parents? Did they fix her hair like that? Does she know who the creatures or John cale are? strange. I thought it was sweet. I thought the cover was great. Was a sweet post. I wish it was clearer.
@karenchristine9 - This seems a bit too much for a kid- the hair and the lyrics of this song. I'm guessing her parents lean more towards the drugs side of the VU and concert-going as opposed to the pure enjoyment of music.
sad how many people are commenting on cale 'covering' venus in furs. the brilliant viola that is so distinctive to much of the vu's sound and this song is all cale. what a brilliant and incomparable musician. long live cale.
standing out side Manchester Apollo for the bands autograph no autographs photos only so the band stand by the van and pose shit on camera life's a bitch
Awesome rendition, and I almost universally hate any and all cover versions of VU songs (Cowboy Junkies' Sweet Jane obviously not included)..but then again, it's Siouxsie, of course she'll kick ass...just look what she did with ''The Passenger''...If anyone can do Lou Reed justice, it's her.
Oh, one more exception, Mazzy Star's live go of Heroin...home run, I suggest checking for it. Now if only P.J. Harvey would do one, maybe White Light/White Heat, I could die a happy man.
If Cale does VIF it is not a cover. To a large ammount he created and arranged the VU sound, so a big part of this song is his!
Just listen to the early recordings on the Peel Slowly & See box set, and how Reed had intentionally written some songs as folk/blues sort of arrangements. Cale totally changed their musical character with his radical musical ideas.
Certainly...I'm not trying to sound elitist by saying this, but VU probably had the most (or at least close to the most) role in shaping the appreciation I'd have for music in general a few years later. I treasure the regular version of PS&S, so hearing the demos, originals, etc. -- meant a great deal to me, needless to say.
But I disgress -- I was overlooking Cale because I was on a big Siouxsie kick when I found this. He's terrific, she's terrific, and together here they're..well, you know,
John Cale is playing this song, is not a cover, this is so Cale's like is Reed's.
Cale absolutely created the VU avantgarde sound. Listen the live renditions of both, John's and Lou's, and you can tell who drives the power of that terrific song.
I was at this show in Sac and i vaguely remember Siouxsie getting pist off at the security for not allowing some guy to takre pictures.

So the future's mapped out for the child?
Who's to say they haven't turn against everything their parents stood for in the last 11 years?
They seem perfectly content to be on stage with Soiuxsie there, and now they're old enough to realise who John Cale is..............

Went to the San Diego show, and it was awesome hearing her do the song with Cale. Had my copy of the "Peel Slowly and See" box set book signed.
