This essentially is, at its root core, Ghostbusters Sr., or the Granddaddy of Ghostbusters; while Ghostbusters is essentially, at its root core, I Want A New Drug Jr.
But, I guess that was already obvious by now to most folks who've tuned into this on here.
Both songs are awesome, and practically equally so.
@DirBenedir If the law really does say that then it is a ridiculous definition for what is lawsuit worthy in the music industry. In copyright infringement cases involving movies, television, literature, etc., you actually have to see a gross representation of someone else's work or idea in some blatant fashion to be able to sue them.
There is only vague similarities at best between this song and Ray Parker Jr.'s Ghostbusters. Which means, law or not, this is not a song that was infringed upon.
I think the Ghostbusters peeps were sued because, think about it, it's a mega popular movie, and this song is more famous than movie (at least to teens like me nowadays). I wasn't even familiar with this song till I heard that it sounded similar to Ghostbusters theme (although I do like the Huey Lewis)
There are similarities in the general sound and beat of the song, but anyone can hear a clear difference between the two songs. It's nothing like today where people sample songs and claim it as their own. Huey Lewis, love his music and talent, really should of looked at it as a compliment. Obviously some inspiration was taken from this song but you don't own a sound and Ray Parker Jr. didn't steal any riffs or lyrics.
92% of teenagers have turned to Hip Hop and Pop.If you are part of the 8% that still listen to real music, copy and paste this message to another 5 videos.DONTLET THE SPIRIT OFROCKDIE!
Huey Lewis was approached to record the theme for Ghostbusters, but he turned them down. I guess the studio basically went "Screw you, Huey", and got RPJ to do the same song, differently enough to not get sued.
They are literally my favorite band ever and yes they are still together thankfully. Their sports album ranked #2 behind michael jacksons thriller in 1984. They beat both prince and Bruce Springsteen on the album charts. Quite an accomplishment for a random bar band. Allmusic praises them, as do I, and all their other fans.
Little to no comparison. It ripped nothing really.....you can't really compare them because there is a tiny resemblance. Huey just got his panties in a bunch.
I was never a Huey fan, til I saw them live opening for 38 Special in 84?. That remains to this day one of the tightest, best sounding concerts I have EVER been to( both bands). That comment is coming from a old thrash metalhead by the way, I was invited and didn't really want to go. I'm glad I did, Chris Haynes is a beast on guitar, VERY unrecognized. That concert changed my whole attitude about accepting and enjoying ALL styles of music
Actually, Huey probably ripped off Ray Parker, but just used the DeLorean he had access to from 1985 to go back in time and publish his song first... He's tricky that one
I can hear the resemblance to Ghostbusters as well. To be honest, I'm glad Huey Lewis and The News made this song - without it, Ghostbusters wouldn't sound nearly as good as it does. :)
This song is okay, but personally I prefer Ghostbusters.
My father was at the helm of the ferry vessel used in this video. It was the Sausalito to San Francisco run. The vessel was the Golden Gate, which is now running down in San Diego.
Wow it really is very similar... Huey really *did* create the rhythm and chords and even the energy for the song Ghostbusters. Anyone who doesn't hear must be beat/tone deaf.
I agree with lots of posters here -clear similarity here between Ghostbusters and this song. Its not just the chords but the overall construction of the song, like certain instrumental patterns and where musical motifs occur in relation to the vocals.
As far as the whole Ghostbusters thing goes, this is what happened...the music execs in charge of Ghostbusters were practically BEGGING Huey to do the music for that film. he and the band refused, and didn't want any association with that film. So the execs got Ray Parker to do the music, and a few months later when Ghostbusters came out, Huey heard the song, was upset with what the music execs did, and brought it to court.
@dereksoros lol ya heard that along time ago too,i been playin bothe tunes back to back definately the bass /rythem is the same.the ghostbusters toon is a little bit spiced up though.:))
It always surprised me that the opening guitar chords in this song sound almost exactly like "Ghostsbusters". Apparently Huey Lewis and the News sued Ray Parker Jr. but they settled out of court.
He had been contacted to write a theme to Ghostbusters but turned it down because of his commitments with "Back To The Future" and out popped the more famous but very similar "Ghostbusters" theme. One of the conditions of the settlement was they he never mentioned the action in public something Huey later did.
I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square." A song so catchy most people don't listen to the lyrics but they should because it's not just a song about conformity and the importance of trends.
Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercial and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost.
