my dog used to do that when she was in pain, and didn't want anyone to touch her...=(( well, and she really bite us!! hehe... I miss her very much...(she passes away in August 29th, 2009)~

Westie is not crazy, but it is dominant. He is tops in the pack, the humans rank beneath him. Watch the Dog Whisperer, he will show you how to assert authority and put the Westie in his place at the bottom of the pack. We have had Westies for decades, love them, but they are strong willed and need to be trained. Have you taken him/her to a training class?

My Westie Scooter doesn't like to be picked up, either. he bites and growls and runs away.

No problem picking up my westie.He loves to cuddle. This guy is uncomfortable.I wonder if maybe he's sore around the stomach or ribs ??

My westie mix is old. I got him from the pound. He makes the same grunts when I move him from my chair. He has nipped me too. With love and training he'll hopefully chill eventually??

My westie would do that when I even lightly touched his sides. My sister called those sounds "piggy". I guess Westies hate to be picked up. They are said to like all fours firmly planted on the ground.

Too cute! Mine gives me the growl when I move her; I had to teach her commands like "turn around", "your butt is in my face, put your head up here." She does them, and I don't get the growls ... funny dogs! BTW .. she hates being held too.

why do all of your westies growl when you pick em up? Mine is almost 1 year old nad she loves being picked up! She is all-grown-up and likes being took up and cuddled!

He is a good boy (and MY baby...) he's 8 and now we have another Westie puppy who is giving him a run for his money!!!!

The kids love the puppy more because they can pick him up and he doesn't growl at them.
