Hey scotty, I just bought a 1993 buick century. It has 73k miles but i noticed that th needle that points to Drive, Nutrail, Park, ect is off. Im worried the guy i bought the car from was messing around in there. It is something normal? oh yeah, and the car wont lock, only from the inside by when i turn e key to lock it, it refuses to lock. Is there a easy fix to this?
@88pie88 forget the needle, they just break down that way. probably need new locks and key for the door then, take the panel off and replace em, or pay a locksmith, they can sometimes fix em.
Hey Scotty, how would I go about removing a seized up ignition barrel? I can't turn my key in the ignition to ACC so I can't remove it haha, I have a VY Holden Commodore.
scotty i have a broken ingition switch i ran a diagnostics after 2 wires from the horn acidently touched together in general i am sure its the ignition switch because no fuses blowed and the starter turned when i bypassed the soliniod for a second...
anyway how do i remove a ignition switch from a 1975 ranchero...
@scottykilmer i dont see a pin hole mines on the colmn btw i fixed it lol maybe temporary but i fixed it i turned it to accessory and turned it back with a bit of force then mashed the key socket in and my vehicle started up when i turned it back forward with pressure
@scottykilmer if i buy a new cylinder lock can use the same key for it or it comes with new keys also would it start or the factory alarm would need to reset? 01 maxima.
Scotty, How do you fix a problem that deals with the steering wheel locking the Ignition so you can not turn the key. Is there a way to unlock the steering wheel to turn the Ignition. I had this happen a few times with different cars and i usually force the key to turn tell i hear a pop of the lock for the steering being released.
@CloudTheTank you have to replace the entire locking assembly if you can't turn the key at all, no way out of that. but if you can wiggle it enough to get it moving, often doing this video replacement will fix that.
Scotty I need your help again! Today I had put my key in the ignition and it wouldn't turn or start. Now normally your supposed to turn the steering wheel because the steering wheel could be locked but thats the problem. my steering wheel isnt locked. So what else can I do? I have a 1995 Toyota Camry.
i got a problem with my 96 mazda protege. the key is stuck in the ingition and wont turn back to the lock position (0) but it will go in Acc (2) on (3) and start (4) so i am forced to leave it in Acc which drains my battery even when i have everything shut off. any help?
@scottykilmer can a faulty ignition switch cause a/c blower and radio not to work when car is running everything is ok when its in on position but when i start it up these along with the pwr windows do not work, also this usually happens when it rains im stomped i have a 02 grand caravan
okay, now I have a couple of questions.. what about a ignition switch that refuses to budge (into Acc) on a 1992 Pontiac Grand Prix with auto transmission? and a low fuel light that stays on constantly. (even when the tank is full)
@bandittweintraub new sending unit in the gas tank would fix the light, but it you can't get it into ACC, you need a new key and lock assembly, they go out all the time.
in still having that issue with the 1992 subaru loyale would the ignition have anything to do with the cel not coming on when i first turn my key ? after 5-10 minutes of sitting on the on position the cel comes on and will start every time
hi Scotty, love the videos. i got a 93 mazda b2200 the tublers is busted and allows the key to come out all the time and doesnt click at any point, the key when pressed in in accesories pushes in, but there is no hole to poke a paperclip or stick in anywhere, i think i have to take the whole things off steering colom and have everything removed so far but can figure out how to remove the key switch part and have considered just reqiring the truck aside from needing the key to work it instead.thx
Could you change the title to "Ignition lock cylinder"? People search "ignition switch" to view an ignition switch, not an ignition lock cylinder. There is a difference. Thank you. (Mechanic. 35yrs.)
If my steering wheel is locked and the ignition won't start, could this be a possible solution? My whole family and I have tried the whole jiggle the wheel and ignition but it's not working AT ALL! I've also tried WD40, pressing the brakes which are stiff, putting it in neutral and jacking it up. Nothing is working.
@imhis00 By any chance is your key worn out? On a truck at my job one day it wouldn't start, after screwing with it for a half hour we got it started and left it running. Guy I work with looked at it when we got it back to the shop and it couldn't figure it out. Next day he grabs a spare key and the truck fired right up no problem, so he looks at the key we were using and notices the cuts in the key are worn, so try a spare key if you have one if your lucky its just a worn key.
CAREFUL so you don’t mess with the airbag circuitry while you’re in there. You don’t want the airbag to malfunction in a crash, or even worse, come crashing in your face during the repair.
hi i have a 99 corolla and part of my key broke and is still stuck inside the ignition and i use any key to start it or even a screw driver.. anyways i was wondering if you had any tips that can help me get it out..
@mr515202 you'd have to get it on ACC, then stick an ice pick in the little hole as in this video, and pull the whole thing out with small pliars. then try getting it out, or buy the part like in this video. Scotty
I own a 2000 Grand Am and I get that SECURITY light coming on every now and then. Makes me wait 10 minutes before I can get rolling. I was told that I can't change the ignition switch without getting some code from the dealer. Is this true or can I just do it myself? BTW your video on changing a starter was a big help!!!! Thanks!! (Long Live Scotty Kilmer)
@ateecher yea, that system requires programming to change that out, as it's part of the anti theft system. Great GM design there to make money for themselves. Scotty
Found the ignition wire to my starter is bad, and a real pain in the neck to trace the fault in the wire. I was thinking about running two wires to my dash, connected to a switch to turn the starter.
Once the lock is GENTLY removed, take to locksmith to have this lock serviced. OFTEN the only problem is the KEYS being worn, and a good locksmith can decode your key and make fresh, correctly cut keys, as opposed to traced copies. IT is important to keep the same key working ignition and other locks, so you do not have a much more expensive issue later, should you lose a "different" ignition key.
scotty my key is chipped as in a computer chip. I wanted to make a spare key but its 500 dollars since its chipped. can I replace the ignition switch with one that doesnt require a chip? will I need to rewire anything
@ismaels91 You can, but the car wouldn't start up then. they are complex computer systems, and that's the way it is these days. Blame the manufacturers wanting to make more money when they break. Scotty
@ismaels91 CALL A REPUTABLE LOCAL LOCKSMITH. I do this for a living and paying $500 for transponder keys is crazy. Most (not all) locksmiths are now involved in these types of systems.
@skydalim09 As A locksmith, here is my advice. If the problem is loose ears or a key you have to wiggle and jiggle to turn the lock then you can pull the lock cyl and take it to the locksmith. They can then either repair or replace and you can still have one key. Other options are to just drive the van to the locksmith's shop.
It is sometimes just a matter of making a new good key, or reattaching the ears and you are good to go.
@skydalim09 Part 2 If the key does not turn, then call the locksmith to come to you, or tow the van to the locksmith, or pull out the steering column and bring it to the locksmith. There is a very good chance of buggering up expensive parts or making the job a lot harder than it has to be.
@aiveezee Call your locksmith first. With only a few exceptions most Ignition lock cylinders do not come out without a key, and it is very easy to bugger up expensive parts by attempting to force things. @smithraymond09029 You could, so give it some gas, and if it always starts right away, they are leaking a bit. But you can just start it that way if it doens't get worse. Scotty
"Replacing A Broken Ignition Switch " would be a better title don`t you think?I mean you didn`t actually fix the old one...you replaced it with a new/better used one correct me if i´m wrong tho.
scotty is the man,,love the video,,but let me ask you my ignition switch has cast iron surrounding the steering wheel,,i have a old car 1996 chevy caprice.how would i change that switch my is acting up,,if I wiggle it ,it make the door chime skip when its beeping,,(the noise that goes ding--ding when the door is open,,,any help
Judging by your videos, Texans must really love Toyotas!
I once had a key actually break off in the ignition of a car, and had to replace the tumbler too. The new keys that came with it turned out to be thicker and stronger than the original keys that came with the car. The key I broke in the ignition was the spare, and my dad broke the master key simply by trying to unlock his door with it. They were made of real thin, cheap metal. This was on a 1989 Oldsmobile Cutlass.
take all this plastic crap off.... you the man i had the same issue on my honda. but i hired a locksmith as i wasnt aware of this trick. dooooooooooooooooooo
Scotty how did you get the new key assembly to match the old one? I once broke a key off in the trunk key hole and when I went to the auto dealer they said they could give me a new assembly but it wouldn't match the current key I had. I would have been stuck with two keys for my car instead of one. Long story short, I found out how to remove the broken key from the lock and just replaced the broken key.
Remove the c-clip and pull the cylinder out of the assembly. Pull the tumblers out of the old lock cylinder with a pair of pliers and note their order from front to back and the tumbler number on each. Insert the properly numbered new tumblers with the same numbers in the new cylinder. Reassemble and your old key will work in the new cylinder.
Locksmiths can do this for you if you're not comfortable. Tell them you want your new cylinder rekeyed to the old.
@moofushu YOu can only match it by swapping out the tumblers inside IF they are still good. Otherwise, you'll have two sets of keys now, one for the door and one for the ignition. Scotty
Just a word of advice for dealing with the plastic crap interiors...just so you don't scratch up the plastics (esp if you are working on a car you like, getting paid to fix, etc) try using plastic trim panel removal tools to pop open access covers and panels where screws are. Metals tools are more prone to scratching up the plastic.
@Kevmo7 You can take it all apart once you remove the tumbler, there's a split ring holding it in. BUT you get new keys with the new tumbler anway. Scotty
@Aspie12345 Ah, but you get these videos for free. No one pays for production or information. I do it all on my own, and my only remuneration is through advertising. Perhaps you don't work for money and live on top of a Redwood tree, but I live in a city where everything is expensive. Scotty
@trunitemare Thanks but I run Ubuntu, I did have success blocking the ads with firefox addin adblock plus. Now Scotty is back to his old self with no more ads.
this happened to my moms 86 ford when she still had it we drove it over to my grandpas and him and my uncle took the colomun apart took the ignition out and got the key out put it back together and it never got stuck again didnt replace a thing
This reminds me of an issue I had with my 2000 Chrysler Concorde. It's not that the key got stuck in the lock, it's that the key wouldn't turn over. I finally figured out the lock assembly there got "off balanced" some how. So, thankfully, all we had to do is straighten it out.
Good stuff Scotty like always. I once attempted to get a stuck key out of this 97 Civic. It didn't go to well and I looked like robber trying to steal the car...
I bet it was a Woman who just shoved the keys in there and yanked them out all the time. Tumblers only wear out to the point the key just falls out not get stuck.
@7477238 But toyota locks often break by themselves, I change a lot of them out, obviously some sort of defect, as they didn't used to break like that. Scotty
@scottykilmer And the price Toyota wants for a replacement is obscene. A little hint, often your local locksmith can repair one of these and often has the ability to rekey them to match the original key. While having two keys is not really a big deal, on some cars if you loose your keys the price can triple or more if the ignition is different.

The failure can be delayed on these Toyotas if worn keys are retired in time and the lock kept properly lubed. Also heavy key rings are bad
@7477238 I bet a was a female too. Women are very dumb when it comes to cars. They hang 30+ trinkets from the key chain which puts unwanted stress on the tumbler, and that's the reason they break most of the time.
scotty your a genius. but i had this problem similar in a 92 camary. what happened was that i was messing with the transmission shifter(automatic) and i believe i took out a spring accidently. the overdrive would not stay pushed in and the key ignition would not go all the way back therefore a stuck key. what happened in my situation?
i wish youtube would take these gay ass advertisements off

@smithraymond09029 You could, so give it some gas, and if it always starts right away, they are leaking a bit. But you can just start it that way if it doens't get worse. Scotty

@ruwithlee1970 You need the key, so it wouldn't be much of a theft. Without the key, you can't get the lock out. Scotty

@steeloable Once you remove the covers and crap, you'll see that too has a small hole that you push into to get the cylinder off. Scotty

Looks like you only needed to remove the plastic on the steering column and that which was below the instrument panel?
julianbell90 1 year ago
@julianbell90 Everything I removed was necessary to access that switch assembly. Scotty

This was on a 1989 Oldsmobile Cutlass.

take all this plastic crap off.... you the man i had the same issue on my honda. but i hired a locksmith as i wasnt aware of this trick. dooooooooooooooooooo
azthundercloud 1 year ago
Scotty how did you get the new key assembly to match the old one? I once broke a key off in the trunk key hole and when I went to the auto dealer they said they could give me a new assembly but it wouldn't match the current key I had. I would have been stuck with two keys for my car instead of one. Long story short, I found out how to remove the broken key from the lock and just replaced the broken key.

Bushougoma 1 year ago
@moofushu To match the assembly.
Bushougoma 1 year ago
@moofushu YOu can only match it by swapping out the tumblers inside IF they are still good. Otherwise, you'll have two sets of keys now, one for the door and one for the ignition. Scotty
scottykilmer 1 year ago
"All this plastic crap..." LOL That's very technical Scotty! ;-) Great video as always. Thanks!
focusonthegreen 1 year ago
So the new tumbler is matched to the existing key, or do you have to replace the door/trunk locks too for the new keys?
squidboy0769 1 year ago
I would just use a spare key for the door locks and leave the one in the igntion alone. At least you would never lose your key. LOL!

Duratec86 1 year ago
@Kevmo7 You can take it all apart once you remove the tumbler, there's a split ring holding it in. BUT you get new keys with the new tumbler anway. Scotty

@Aspie12345 Ah, but you get these videos for free. No one pays for production or information. I do it all on my own, and my only remuneration is through advertising. Perhaps you don't work for money and live on top of a Redwood tree, but I live in a city where everything is expensive. Scotty

This reminds me of an issue I had with my 2000 Chrysler Concorde. It's not that the key got stuck in the lock, it's that the key wouldn't turn over. I finally figured out the lock assembly there got "off balanced" some how. So, thankfully, all we had to do is straighten it out.

I bet it was a Woman who just shoved the keys in there and yanked them out all the time. Tumblers only wear out to the point the key just falls out not get stuck.
7477238 1 year ago

MrRShoaf 9 months ago
@7477238 I bet a was a female too. Women are very dumb when it comes to cars. They hang 30+ trinkets from the key chain which puts unwanted stress on the tumbler, and that's the reason they break most of the time.

scotty your a genius. but i had this problem similar in a 92 camary. what happened was that i was messing with the transmission shifter(automatic) and i believe i took out a spring accidently. the overdrive would not stay pushed in and the key ignition would not go all the way back therefore a stuck key. what happened in my situation?
tactical321 1 year ago
@tactical321 You broke that assembly in the shifter that feeds back to the ignition switch allowing you only to remove the key when in park. Scotty
