Good video. It's a shame so many don't know how to listen to what is said. They take tidbits out of context and nags on it without realizing they only make themselves look stupid.
Stop looking at petty details, it's the big picture that is important. Who cares how a ninja dressed 700 years ago, is that knowledge going to change anything?
A shinobi is one who endures, not a crazy person clad in black who's running on rooftops.
so in truth a samurai could also be a ninja as long as he did what a ninja did.. no matter what style of combat he had.. if he spied, disquised and decieved he was a ninja..
how is it that the ninja are lower class at 4:35, & then you talk about Hatori Hanzo & others as Samurai leaders, If ninja were all lower class no one would no there name.
@Seres1091 i red somewhere that nin means blade.. and means being someone who is sharp as a blade ... could also alure to the meaning of endure
i like your explenation..
i am keen to learn anythin gi can.. i am highly inspired specially by ninjas and i dont know exactly why.. its not a fad of omine i had two spirit inspirations in my life it was bruce lee and ninja.. help me and i wil llisten to anything
@Seres1091 as far as I know the term for Ninja was rarely traditionally used in japan, the characters are the same but are read as "shinobimono", which literally means "stealer in" or "infiltrator", the word ninja is made from taking the opposite readings of the characters "nin" and "jya", which have the same meaning.
Can you provide a site or historical document that is chinese origin to state what you just said? From what I know the Lin Kuei were just forest dwellers and did not practice any martial arts.
@Reido2828 from what i have read and understannd is lin kuei translates to forest demons-this is a title that some would reference the ninja as. that is to say the lin kuei wasnt a family of ninja, rather an entity they were compared to. keep researching i am probably wrong-sifting fact from fiction when you are dealing with a secret class in society is difficult to say the least
Any history of Ninjutsu has to acknowledge from the outset that the whole subject is shrouded in myths and propaganda, most of it spread by the Ninja themselves.
Point is, no one really knows for sure the exact truth separating out fact from fiction, and fitting the truth together, is almost impossible and always coloured by the opinions of the person attempting it.
In short, don't listen to people who try to rubbish your research on this; they don't know for sure either.
And you're right about the origins of the ninja uniform; whether it has an earlier origin in the Lin Kuei, I don't know, but the adoption of it by the Ninja does indeed originate with Japanese theatre. Your point at the end on that note was absolutely correct.
Nice inclusion of "ask a ninja" as an endnote, too.
@JCLeSinge It is hard to get all the facts right on this subject. That's why i called it Ninja 'Lore'. But it's fascinating, and fun to look into. Thanks.
@tokarski21: In your research for this, did you run across the concept of Kyushujutsu Tenkan-ho? That's the Ninja philosophy of truth. A basic concept of it is that truth and lies can be "interchanged" without compromising what the truth actually is. So obfuscating the facts is one of the few things we can confidently ascribe to historical ninjutsu.
@tokarski21: I thought it was very good, actually; I know some people have been bitching, but they're just sore that you didn't lay out "their" idea of what the "real" Ninja were all about.
What, did they expect a comprehensively detailed breakdown of complete Ninja philosophy, history and practice in eight minutes?
I especially liked the run-down on famous Ninja; you always give fascinating leads to look more deeply into the subject; I'm certainly very interested in the Minoans now; cheers.

Well, that's a tricky question, and one that has a lot of controversy behind it. I don't believe that Japanese martial arts can be traced back anywhere but to Japan. What came from China were some ideas and practices that over a long period of time evolved and were absorbed as local marial arts developed.
As far as can be traced in what historical records are left, All Eastern Martial arts come originally from India. When the Budda made pacifists of many of his followers, the Kshatriya's didn't forget their warrior training, they figured out how to use it in defense (Dead Missionaries DON'T make many converts) and as they moved into China and Indonesia, and on into Japan, Korea and the Phillipines the arts altered to suit local necessities.
The origin is from India..but technique s changed and from in different forms..just as buddha.. there left the warriors skill with him even though he was a monk .. earlier he was prince who learnt how to warfare skills... there might be reasons he thought other monks how to defend but later it keeps adding to new techniques and new styles.. this is wat i belive
I would like to redo many of these episodes one day - but like yourself, I am looking for a professional venue that would contract me to do so. Until then I will continue making new episodes on a wide a variety of topics, and hopefully increase my viewership. Thanks for watching and commening.
Also, the black clad "Kuroko" you see on kabuki is there to visually mask their existence, giving an illusion of them being backstage.
It may resemble "ninja" to you westerners, but they are totally unrelated.
No, they are not the foundation of ninja image as this show claims.
God, I could go on and on about this.
No, I am not an expert on Ninja. However, I am speaking from an average Japanese POV, and even then, I have to say about HALF of information presented here are bogus.
There's a lot of totally wrong information mixed in with somewhat correct information.
The... um... researcher for this video needs to um, "research" a bit more before he presents his story.
There's tons of accounts wrong, including showing portraits of TOTALLY DIFFERENT PERSON than what's being discussed, or killing off people in ways they didn't die.
I just hope no one takes this video too seriously.
I think Goemon is considered more of a thief than Ninja,..
but I thought this clip was well produced!! Good Job!!!
Would you care to do piece on Himiko? She was basically a queen/shaman of early Japan. I think most (if not all) of the source is from China. She is shrouded in mystery but she is a big part of Japanese history none the less.
Very good! Even with a few inaccuracies, you understand how to make an interesting video! Most historical documentaries, they may have PERFECT accuracy, but they're soooo boring, they are unwatchable. Thanks for a one in a million good documentary. Very very good job.
This isn't too bad. I mean, there are a lot of inaccuracies such as Hanzo's death, shinobi being peasants & assassins, and Ishikawa Goemon being a shinobi, but it's better than most things I've seen.
In this video, the truth is about 15 %. On the other part, there are inaccurate and mistaken informations about Ninja such as a mere speculation or a confusion of historical records. It's clear that the author of this video had no chance to learn Japanese history.
Ego much, MiCICL? You claim educational status, yet you start bragging about your genitalia on YouTube. If you are truly knowledgable in ninja history, why don't you point the video owner in the direction of some correct and informative sources instead of belittling him and trying to exaggerate the length of your e-penis?
Hi Tokarski. Sorry about all the 'comment removed by author's' I left on your page. I started flaming all the people who were criticising your very well-done video. Then I realised that only losers fight Youtube battles-- so I deleted them all. I admire your patience in always giving polite responses to some very rude and badly brought up people. Great Video! I'm educating myself on your previous work now--well done!
Thanks, I appreciate it. Certainly everyone is entitled to their opinions, and Youtube is definitely a place they are spoken. One of the great things here is that you can actually respond to the people who's videos you watch, and like Denzel Washington said, "It's all good."
I'm japanese and sorry tokarski21 I laughed so hard cus almost all of your information are so wrong.
Have you ever read japanese books about history and culture? The many foreigners with misinformed opinions are a result of reading only materials written in english.
Now I understand how foreigners misunderstand "ninja" and japanese history.
Dont worry about saoricious, hes obviously some kinda of expert on the ninja more-so then u...idiot. Im Japanese, and i say your information was very informative and would love to hear more on the subject! :)
Its obvious u dont have a brain in your head to understand anything from a Japanese book, and the only thing u know about the Japanese language is what uve picked up on from watching subtitled anime lol. You never lived a day of your life in Japan lol. Better luck next time kiddo
what!? what are you talking about?subtitled anime?? im japanese woman and if you were a japanese I have no idea why you can't find this video contains lots of wrong infomation. ok, i write in japanese for you
From all these discusions there are obviously a lot of people who would like to know the true story of the Ninja, so do us all a favor - because as you say, I don't have the ability - tell us something. Where can we go on the internet to get the right information? My 'Lost History' videos are all about getting people interested in learning more about a topic - so quit complaining and really tell us something.
Well, for one, showing portrait of the famous Takeda Shingen, one of the most prominent warlord of the sengoku era, and claiming it to be of Ishikawa Goemon, you already know you're off to a bad start.
There's also a lot of "theories" based on the man's pure guessing, passed on as facts. I hate to say this, but this "Lost History" show showcases a much lower standards than what you would expect from say, something on the Discovery Channel.
Ur a real piece of work dude lmao. Ur ego is about as massive as my cock. If ur Japanese then I'm ashamed to have Japanese heritage. Your not a an expert on the subject, and just because your Japanese doesnt mean you know everything about Feudal Japan. Idiot, thats like me saying, "Hey! Since I live in the US I know more about Civil War soldiers then any other foreigners because I was born and raised in the US." Lmao Fuck looser. The Japanese have a name for people like you, but I wont educate u
LMAO! Ur lame dude. I gotta Playstation 3 and can type in Japanese all day to! Please explain to us what makes u the foremost expert on feual Japan? Lol u probably read a book or two and interpreted everything in it to be fact and anything outside of what uve been told is not correct haha! I bet u believe everything u see on tv to. Dumb fuck. If ur so fuckin knowledgable on the subject then wheres ur vid? U aint got one so u can stfu lmao!
I especially liked this one. I always thought Ninjas were a perverse version of the Ninjutsu. I thought they were just like the samurai who, before being employed by the govt used to work only for themselves and benefit of others, not profit driven assassins.
A very well narrated and well researched documentary! It was incredibly entertaining to watch. My only complaint would be that I would have wanted a part 2, 3, 4, and possibly 5!
Keep up the amazing work! I have just subscribed to your channel :D
Thanks. If I someday get enough viewers like you I might be able to convince someone like The History Channel to let me do these episodes on a bigger scale.
I really hope so! I would love to see your shows on the History Channel, heh. I know you're probably really busy, but plus don't stop making videos :). It is quite rare to see documentaries where the narrator has charisma and character.
Your wrong,Ninjas exist today, everyone says ya ya ya well wheres the proof?Well wheres the proof that thier is no Ninjas today? As I thought, almost nobody knows what thier talking about and the fictional ninja is what everyone thinks is real now which is absolute bullshit, they had armour that was swrod proof and wieghs literally almost nothing, but the modern day ninja has BULLET proof armour that wieghs literally almost nothing, you should do better research on thier armour that they DO have.
Proof is a very profound word, and very elusive. Obviously, I haven't proven anything, nor have I attempted to. It's all information - some right, some wrong, some in the middle. Thanks for watching.
how do you define a ninja? i think the best way to define one would be someone who has been taught what it is to be a ninja by another ninja. the teachings must be genuine (from when they were first written) and must not be obsolete for todays times.
people are mastering the arts of ninjutsu today but how can you call them a ninja when there weapons and technique are obsolete & give you the lower hand in todays world. you pit a swat officer or a military Lieutenant against a ninjutsu master.
the ninjustu master will lose every time. there is more to being a ninja than weapons and combat. i am curious because of the uncanny cleverness and intelligence that i assume ninjas had (especially the ones that survived) if they were able to become a more important part of the earth and through things like religion & meditation if they were able to posess powers and qualities that gave them extended life spans & "supernatural" abilities.
Hattori Hanzo Masanari didn't die in a sea battle against the Fuma, he died of natural causes, ie. old age. Also Sasuke Sarutobi is a fictional character from books. Every historian knows he never existed. You should check your facts better.
Hattori Hanzo probably did die of old age, and yes, Sasuke is a fictional character. Thanks for clearing that up. Remember, the episode is called 'Ninja Lore', not 'Ninja Fact' - although i did try to get things as accurate as possible. I guess if I was a better historian you wouldn't be watching me on Youtube - but I hope you enjoyed the show and I appreciate your viewing it.
I would like to know if the Japanese ninja was ever used against ancient China & Korea in 1500 AD/CE. During Japanese invasion of Korea and China part 1 (part 2 was in late 1800's, see 1895-1945)

Lin Kuei, which means "forest ghosts" were a real clan of assassins popularized by Mortal Kombat.

there are no practitioners of ninjutsu alive. so saying "then, and now" is incredibly misguided.
also worth noting...
the opening line, "the ninjutsu" referring to ninja is incorrect.

@BilladaKilla2004

@BilladaKilla2004 I read somewhere that the book, "The Art of War" which came from China greatly influenced the ideology of ninjas.

Terrific vid. can you please make a longer, more detailed one?
Even though this style of narration was good, i would prefer a more serious tone.
Keep up the good work and i look forward to more.

However, I am speaking from an average Japanese POV, and even then, I have to say about HALF of information presented here are bogus.
aohige 2 years ago
Wow.
If it was a troll attempt, he definitely got me.
aohige 2 years ago
Its true Dr.Phil Is in fact a ninja! Have you ever noticed his ninja blades? Their hidden in his tux.
killachris28 2 years ago
Also, Takeru is NOT considered Ninja at all and there is not correlation between Takeru and Ninja.
Also, the so called portrait of Momochi at 5:11 is actually Ashikaga Takauji, the founder of Ashikaga Shogunate. Bascially a Shogun. Not Ninja.

tokarski21 -
I think Goemon is considered more of a thief than Ninja,..
but I thought this clip was well produced!! Good Job!!!
Would you care to do piece on Himiko? She was basically a queen/shaman of early Japan. I think most (if not all) of the source is from China. She is shrouded in mystery but she is a big part of Japanese history none the less.
ehors123 2 years ago
I will keep her in mind for a future episode. Thanks.

Very good! Even with a few inaccuracies, you understand how to make an interesting video! Most historical documentaries, they may have PERFECT accuracy, but they're soooo boring, they are unwatchable. Thanks for a one in a million good documentary. Very very good job.

SDMFTrueBlue 2 years ago 2
Hi Tokarski. Sorry about all the 'comment removed by author's' I left on your page. I started flaming all the people who were criticising your very well-done video. Then I realised that only losers fight Youtube battles-- so I deleted them all. I admire your patience in always giving polite responses to some very rude and badly brought up people. Great Video! I'm educating myself on your previous work now--well done!
KingofStarfox 2 years ago
Thanks, I appreciate it. Certainly everyone is entitled to their opinions, and Youtube is definitely a place they are spoken. One of the great things here is that you can actually respond to the people who's videos you watch, and like Denzel Washington said, "It's all good."

Since the video has so many wrong informations, it's far from educational.

I'm japanese and sorry tokarski21 I laughed so hard cus almost all of your information are so wrong.
Have you ever read japanese books about history and culture? The many foreigners with misinformed opinions are a result of reading only materials written in english.
Now I understand how foreigners misunderstand "ninja" and japanese history.
anyway, it was so funny.

toraski don't understand Japanese.
He just picked random internet sites, never verify whether it's correct or wrong.
I mean he can't, because he doesn't have the ability.
I hope most Americans are not dumb to believe this video.
buffon399 2 years ago
From all these discusions there are obviously a lot of people who would like to know the true story of the Ninja, so do us all a favor - because as you say, I don't have the ability - tell us something. Where can we go on the internet to get the right information? My 'Lost History' videos are all about getting people interested in learning more about a topic - so quit complaining and really tell us something.
tokarski21 2 years ago
You want to research Japanese history then learn Japanese to be able to read academic books.
But you know there is "Samurai Archives Forum" . Many members of the forum read and write Japanese and be able to access those books.
Why don't you go back to the forum thread that you created and ask them what was wrong with your video?
buffon399 2 years ago
As for the better Ninja history video, my suggestions are

tokarski21 2 years ago

I have just subscribed to your channel :D

ok before anyone else makes stupid comments Ninjas are "Killers for money" and not Ninjas with magic that are hired to help and save other people.
jokerisnomak 2 years ago
Your wrong,Ninjas exist today, everyone says ya ya ya well wheres the proof?Well wheres the proof that thier is no Ninjas today? As I thought, almost nobody knows what thier talking about and the fictional ninja is what everyone thinks is real now which is absolute bullshit, they had armour that was swrod proof and wieghs literally almost nothing, but the modern day ninja has BULLET proof armour that wieghs literally almost nothing, you should do better research on thier armour that they DO have.
tcoxic 2 years ago
Proof is a very profound word, and very elusive. Obviously, I haven't proven anything, nor have I attempted to. It's all information - some right, some wrong, some in the middle. Thanks for watching.
tokarski21 2 years ago
No problem, I see your not an inmature whinny bitch who says thier right about everything, it was still a good video btw.
tcoxic 2 years ago
how do you define a ninja? i think the best way to define one would be someone who has been taught what it is to be a ninja by another ninja. the teachings must be genuine (from when they were first written) and must not be obsolete for todays times.
people are mastering the arts of ninjutsu today but how can you call them a ninja when there weapons and technique are obsolete & give you the lower hand in todays world. you pit a swat officer or a military Lieutenant against a ninjutsu master.
iMute0 2 years ago
the ninjustu master will lose every time. there is more to being a ninja than weapons and combat. i am curious because of the uncanny cleverness and intelligence that i assume ninjas had (especially the ones that survived) if they were able to become a more important part of the earth and through things like religion & meditation if they were able to posess powers and qualities that gave them extended life spans & "supernatural" abilities.
iMute0 2 years ago
Hattori Hanzo Masanari didn't die in a sea battle against the Fuma, he died of natural causes, ie. old age. Also Sasuke Sarutobi is a fictional character from books. Every historian knows he never existed. You should check your facts better.
WraitheDarkbane 2 years ago
Hattori Hanzo probably did die of old age, and yes, Sasuke is a fictional character. Thanks for clearing that up. Remember, the episode is called 'Ninja Lore', not 'Ninja Fact' - although i did try to get things as accurate as possible. I guess if I was a better historian you wouldn't be watching me on Youtube - but I hope you enjoyed the show and I appreciate your viewing it.
