  • This is one of most soothing pieces of music I've ever heard.John Mclaughlin is great!

  • Try as we may to make a silence we cannot. ~ John Cage In A Silent Way ~ Miles Davis First movement was no tempi, Second Movement featured Miles on trumpet a tempo and out. Bitches Brew was to follow

  • dig it always

  • This is the beginning of jazz-fusion!

  • What a wonderful composition. Thank you so much for sharing this.

  • the Way the Trumpet comes in for the first time is just so perfect

  • Miles Davis invented post-rock

  • 3 people are really in a silent way!

  • I enjoy late night driving through the countryside to this album.

  • as a teenager i would always take anap to this tune I think it should be included in meditation 101

  • one of my desert island albums

  • I have always wondered what JM does to make his B string go slightly out of tune, and why it sounds so good.

  • @edeans its called a blue note. when used right, they do indeed sound great, but it's not out of tune.

  • I'm certain this has been used in film, but I can't for the life of me figure out which movie I've heard it in....

  • @reawaken14 Maybe Finding Forrester?

  • music to fall asleep to. i love it, so peacful, and soothing.

  • Also check out Eddie Harris's "Listen Here" to see what also inspired Miles in this direction.

  • beautiful

  • Joe Zawinul, genius. Rip.

  • that's really the sound of silence...

  • I dislike the upbeat part of this song, but not because it's bad, but because that calm, downbeat first part is just too good, too good.

  • Perfect!

  • I just had to go to Amazon and buy this one and Kind Of Blue. I love the fact of how he tried different things and his musicians were not afraid of going along with him. Now my little MD collection only has Bitches Brew, On the corner, Someday my prince will come, but hope it goes on growing. Just great.

  • you can hear miles talking at about 5:13

  • One of my favorite Miles Davis albums. In addition to inventing jazz-rock aka fusion, the man laid the groundwork for ambient (this album) and electronica ("He Loved Him Madly"). Listen to "On the Corner," and you'll hear the birth cries of rap tracks. My cousin likes heavy metal. I once played him "Prelude" from "Agharta." Pete Cosey's guitar solo made him wince. As for Afro-beat, "Dark Magus" anyone? World music in general, "Sketches of Spain."

  • I think he told John McLaughlin to play the guitar like you don't know how to on this record... anyone who plays the guitar has to recognize that statement as utter genius!! sometimes I think the whole new age movement (or whatever they are calling that now) was based on albums like this BUT with far inferior results... this is just WOW!

  • I personally want to thank PerryCoxPF93 for introducing me to this amazing album. I got it from Amazon last week, and have been playing it non-stop ever since. And like you and Bluesman88, I, too, listen to it at bedtime. But I play this whenever...it's perfect for any situation. Oh, and I'm also paying it forward by introducing it to my own circle of friends/family :) Next up: Bitches Brew!

  • @AfterwardDeified

...and let me add how much I love the album cover art. Might be the best I've come across to date.

  • its a bad idea to listen to this while trying to do homework. ZZzzzZzzZZZzzz...

  • Is it weird that this music does nothing for me? When I listen, I hear no direction or melody AT ALL. When other people talk about how great this is, I listen with such an open mind but alas, nothing! Does anyone else here not get this? Or am I all alone?

  • @HendrixClaptonSRV Yeah, I guess I'm trying too hard. I would really like to understand what the fuss is all about. I guess I'll have to come back to it at some point and see if my taste changes.

  • @Noodleztherabbit

For tasting this music you have to listen to much more different music: 20 century classical music,Jazz,Ethnic music and so on.

Remember this music is written by Joe Zawinul a Viennese Piano player.(Much european music in mind)

  • @Noodleztherabbit

You should listen to whatever makes you happy. I happen to love miles davis, but I would agree that jazz requires another listening skills. If you don't feel it, then it's normal. But I advice you to go check out It Never Entered My Mind, I Fall In Love Too easily or Flamenco Sketches, by Miles. You might chage your mind. Or not. Either way, just listen to what you love.

    Cheers!

  • Every time we thought we had caught up with Miles he had already turned a corner.

  • Big tip for anyone who doesn't like this, especially those who find it boring: learn an instrument, if you haven't already, and learn it properly. Learn all the theory. then ignore the theory and come up with your own, because the western system is the most awful, arbitrary thing in existence. I did this using mathematical principles. Then I found Miles, and found out that he was using exactly the same logic as me. This album is possibly one of, if not the greatest album in existence.

  • Ladies and Gentlemen welcome to Jazz Fusion.

  • 4:10- I was sleeping on a beach, listening to some "jazz album" for the first time.......

I had never heard fushion before, not fushion that I liked at least, that first cymbal crash sent me about a foot off the ground, I couldn't belive my ears- fushion? with style? rhythym? I've been hooked since

  • Miles literally brings this groove to a boil and then turns the heat down each time.Genius!

  • I always think that this was influenced by the Loewe/Lerner song "On the street where you live" from the 1956 musical "My Fair Lady". Also heard the rumour that it was written in a way to restrain the explosive Tony Williams until close to the end when he was allowed to, well, explode! Whatever, it's a cracking piece.

  • The best of Miles right here, in my opinion

  • On a Miles Davis documentary I heard Santana describe this as very soothing, like the first birds of the morning. I realize now what he was saying. This is beautiful.

  • is this the 1st track of the three on the b-side? or you can't really tell where the other ones begin?

  • Brian Eno copied this for his famous Music for Airports. And I mean he COPIED.

  • @TheBelva85 Not only that, Eno then went on and criticized Miles in an interview as though Miles were somehow beneath him.

  • @TheBelva85

I don't think he copied it. Was influenced by it ok. Although, I think a more fair assumption is that Miles created ambient music and Eno coined the term.

  • @TheBelva85

    no fucking lie

  • @BetterTasteThanU

lol @ music noob with misleading name.

  • peace..

  • @johnny4463435 You must be a crack baby to not see the value in this...

  • @johnny4463435 Sweet bleedin Jesus I hope you're joking

  • I was trying out a guitar at guitar center today and a older man came up to me and said I sounded like this.

    Quite similar.

    This... is just sublime.

This...THIS is where I want to go when I die.

  • beautiful. that album cover is stunning too!

  • awesome chord intervals on this album!

  • those chords are amazing, id like to know myself

  • I've always wondered - does anyone know what chords those are at 4:58?

  • @madpop17 Play a B-E-A with your right hand on the piano. then slide your hand down a half step so you're playing Bb-Eb-Ab. play that new chord twice. Then play a F--C-Bb-Gb, and then go to F-B-Bb-Gb, finally a F--D-C-A.

Those are some WICKED jazz chords, I got a Miles real book a few days ago, and I've been playing those four chords ever since

  • @jobasbass thanks!

  • @madpop17 Glad I could help- happy playing!

  • I think this is my favorite Miles' tune

  • "In A Silent Way " can only be beaten by "Bitches Brew". Incredible albums.

  • the sorcerer.

  • Apparently Joe Zwainful didnt like what Miles did with this tune, I will never understand why.

  • @d2theutchgold2 The tune was written by Zwainul. Miles took out a bunch of specific chords that Zwainul wrote in. Miles felt that removing them added freedom and uncovered the beautiful melody.

  • @tuhsdxas Oh yeah I know he wrote it alrite I just dont understand how he didnt like it. I suppose tho, he probably wrote it how he wanted it to sound.

  • @d2theutchgold2 It's because Joe Wrote the tune, but Miles removed a bunch of specific chords to free up the melody and the comping.

  • @tuhsdxas sorry. I didn't think my first reply worked, so I accidentally did a second one.

  • damn! what did he eat for breakfast? that first song was one of the most amazing pieces of music i've ever heard.

  • Incredible album.

Lie on your bed and levitate.

  • the great miles davis

  • the start of fusion

  • a monumental epic theme to the ages (...or something like that :>)

  • when I heard it the first time I was like hypnotized, my mouth wide open... as it finished I said: "man, that's the most beautiful thing I ever heard..."

  • ... and God created Miles...

  • kenny g happened to men like miles davis

    jk

  • CANCION DE 1969

  • I think for about a month straight after I got this record, I put it on just before I was about to get to sleep, it's hypnotic rhythms carrying me to a jazz inspired dream land.

  • that's so crazy!!!!

    I did that last week!!!

  • @PerryCoxPF93 Right on! It's a classic, that's for sure.

  • @Bluesmen88 It was a long day, I retreated to my headphones and quickly put this one in. A couple hours later I woke with that nasty nap taste in my mouth but hit "replay". So many memories with this one.......

  • @Bluesmen88 Gotta try this :P

  • @Bluesmen88 I did that tonight, put it on repeat, went with the weather.. which is why I had to share this video when I woke up. Gave me dreams in which it meshed together along with the freshness of the fall night air from the open window... the residual feeling when I awoke was NICE, like it all brewed up inside of me, nostalgic, pure, gone now, but got a slight taste listening to it again..... still half asleep. sweet dreams

  • @Bluesmen88

Record must have worn out over night...

  • @Bluesmen88 I did it too!

  • @Bluesmen88 la colonna sonora della creazione...prima; della vita...dopo; ...e il naufragar m'è dolce in questo mare, o sogno; il silenzio avvolge i suono dolcissimo della tromba di Miles.

  • @Bluesmen88 If this puts you to sleep, then we know it takes 4 minutes and 11 seconds for you to dose off :D

  • what happened to men like miles davis

  • they died like miles davis

  • Greatest music man who has ever graced planet earth

Yeah & the 73 to 75 well included as you fuck no nothing critics still are catching up, they have just got On The Corner so maybe they are NEARLY their

  • This is the best, Miles is man of rare inteligence and talent. He knew how to gather the right people and make the work with passion. Miles is gifted and good.

Whenever I feel lost, I come to this very tune to find something new that can help me, even if it is a tiny piece. But as Miles has shown, nothing is so small that can't change the whole.

This tune is the sound of Heaven.

  • I love many Miles tunes. This one is arguably his most un-categorizable yet most instantly hypnotic. He and the band communicate Grand Mourning like it was a military salute in some alt electric-piano universe. Someone or something noteworthy has passed, and Miles wants you to know about the passing. If I can arrange to hear this on my deathbed, I will die very lucky.

  • @sandydidit

Elsk du bare Milies! men husk... det var Joe Zawinul der komponerede melodien. Den største fusions tangentspiller nogensinde.

  • @sandydidit It's a Joe Zawinul tune actually.

  • beautiful music
