Ive never rung here but Ive always felt the closer you are to the bells the better they are to ring and more responsive - the towers I have rung at where the bells are straight above prove my point to me anyway so what makes these so bad?
@SrWilson3s Longbridge Deverill, East Hagbourne and Swindon Village are examples of you being wrong - they go awfully!! All very low draught and all very difficult to ring!! More responsive maybe, but in many respects I prefer a longer draught ring!!
@simonbellringer Well I don't think im wrong as from my own personal experiences and the towers I have rung at thats just how I feel. You prob had different experiences such as these towers you named and obviously it didn't suit you but its all good us ringers are all individuals and have our preferences can only go on the experiences of all the towers we have rung at , I don't really enjoy ringing a towers with really long draughts personally!
@SrWilson3s Yes, there are quite a few nice low-draught rings out there - Rodbourne Cheney and Charlton Kings to name but two. I can't say I like a "long-long" draught ring,such as Cricklade, but often they are more predictable, providing you keep a tight rope.
They aren't exactly your classic ring of 10 but they do most definitely sound better outside, in the ringing chamber they are immediately above your head hence the clonking. People say they are tough to ring but I think they're some of the best-going bells I've ever rung on.
it is a bizaare sound, probably something to do with the bells being literally just above your head! They sound rather better outside! They handle very well though.
I should think they've put in some sort of sound insulation in there that doesn't allow the actual bell sound and hum through but lets the sound of the clapper when it hits the bell through. Perhaps they should consult a sound specialist on it!?
Has the tenor been rung up wrong?

@SrWilson3s I dont like massive long drafts e.g Cricklade but I hate really short ones like Oakdale, Poole

why are they challenging to ring? does it have anything to do with that clunky sound in the background?

Why do ringers have little carpets?
And what is the function of the sally?
meme2702 2 years ago
@meme2702
To stop the ropes wearing out the carpet & the carpet wearing out the ropes.
Having a sally stops rope burn...

They sound much better outside and are very good for such a mix of old bells.

I have only been there once and was glad that I made the effort to go outside to listen for a bit

The last time I was there someone went up to the belfry through the trapdoor and I must say with the door open they sounded infinitely better.
